Education and the future : relations between new technologies and the world of teaching in twenty years of the Scuola Italiana Moderna Journal
This contribution aims to chart how the future looked to the Italian world of education in the 1960s and 1970s, by analyzing articles published in Scuola Italiana Moderna, a specialist journal for teachers with Catholic leanings. We examine studies and opinions regarding new technologies and AI (Artificial Intelligence) in relation to the concepts of school, education and teaching. Our aim is to focus on perceptions of how technology, computer science and the idea of AI might change the experience of education and teaching in the future. We also look at the utopianprojective aspect of a line of reasoning that tried to imagine the impact of AI: how it might affect people’s lives; whether it would be useful in training courses and institutions; and how it would shape the children of the future. The concerns of a moral order that accompanied such considerations are also examined
Pedagogical Utopia Through the Classics
This contribution takes a look at the close link that is created in the educational setting between the classics of the history of education and the promotion of pedagogical utopia, in the sense of a constant generative tension towards what is possible and what is "not yet." After disambiguating the concept of utopia, starting from the reference theories, we use an interpretative key to outline and analyze the value of teaching the history of educational thought, also as proposed in the classic works that metaphorically embody the founding characteristics of the very concept of education. Then the development of a pedagogical utopia is associated both with its capacity to solicit a projective and emancipatory thought, and with the ethical and political dimension intrinsic in the educational professional. As a process that affects the domains of existence and experience, it seems to be not only inseparably related to the educational function of the history of pedagogical ideas, but also a driving force for new experiences, new thinking on education, and a different future for education
Starting with the journal L’Educazione Nazionale (1919-33), founded and directed by Lombardo Radice, we examine the role of social educator in boarding schools and other marginal educational settings in Italy in the 1920s and 1930s. Little seems to have been done so far to reconstruct their professional story in such institutions.
The journal published numerous contributions supporting the benefits of education in boarding schools, promoting them as an educational question.
Often in the form of interviews with educators, censors and governesses, accounts of life in boarding school reveal the gap between academia’s idea of education theory and the reality of these institutions, between a theory of welcoming and acknowledging, and a daily practice of obedience, punishment and control, and of people serving as educators for want of a better job.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
