    Unified mathematical treatment of complex cascaded bipartite networks: The case of collections of journal papers

    In this study, a mathematical treatment is proposed for analysis of entities and relations among entities in complex networks consisting of cascaded bipartite networks. This treatment is applied to the case of collections of journal papers. In this case, entities are distinguishable objects and concepts, such as papers, references, paper authors, reference authors, paper journals, reference journals, institutions, terms, and term definitions. Relations are associations between entity-types such as papers and the references they cite, or paper authors and the papers they write. An entity-relationship model is introduced that explicitly shows direct links between entity-types and possible useful indirect relations. From this a matrix formulation and generalized matrix arithmetic are introduced that allow easy expression of relations between entities and calculation of weights of indirect links and co-occurrence links. Occurrence matrices, equivalence matrices, membership matrices and co-occurrence matrices are described. A dynamic model of growth describes recursive relations in occurrence and co-occurrence matrices as papers are added to the paper collection. Graph theoretic matrices are introduced to allow information flow studies of networks of papers linked by their citations. Similarity calculations and similarity fusion are explained. Derivation of feature vectors for pattern recognition techniques is presented. The relation of the proposed mathematical treatment to seriation, clustering, multidimensional scaling, and visualization techniques is discussed. It is shown that most existing bibliometric analysis techniques for dealing with collections of journal papers are easily expressed in terms of the proposed mathematical treatment: co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling analysis, author co-citation analysis, journal co-citation analysis, Braam-Moed-vanRaan (BMV) co-citation/co-word analysis, latent semantic analysis, hubs and authorities, and multidimensional scaling. This report discusses an extensive software toolkit that was developed for this research for analyzing and visualizing entities and links in a collection of journal papers. Additionally, an extensive case study is presented, analyzing and visualizing 60 years of anthrax research through a collection of journal papers. When dealing with complex networks that consist of cascaded bipartite networks, the treatment presented here provides a general mathematical framework for all aspects of analysis of static network structure and network dynamic growth. As such, it provides a basic paradigm for thinking about and modeling such networks: computing direct and indirect links, expressing and analyzing statistical distributions of network characteristics, describing network growth, deriving feature vectors, clustering, and visualizing network structure and growth

    Corolla size and temporal displacement of flowering times among sympatric diploid and tetraploid highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum)

    Polyploidy (whole-genome duplication) is common in vascular plants, but the modes of establishment and persistence, as well as the ecological consequences, of polyploidy remain vague. Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) is an ecologically and economically important understory shrub with an unclear species definition, coexisting in sympatric populations of diploid and tetraploid cytotypes. This study analyzes differences in bloom time between sympatric diploid and tetraploid V. corymbosum in natural populations, testing the potential for these cytotypes to interbreed and contributing to the formation and continuity of ploidy-level diversification within this species. Ploidal level was confirmed through DNA flow cytometry of sympatric plants from two populations in New Jersey, USA. Flower bloom date and corolla size were recorded over a three-year period. Diploid corollas were 32% smaller than tetraploid corollas, making them easily identifiable in the field. Ploidy accounted for 55-69% of the variation in bloom date, with diploids flowering about one week before tetraploids, and the remaining variation distributed among plants, among branches, and within branches. Notwithstanding these differences, there was modest overlap in flowering time between cytotypes, suggesting that cross-pollination is possible. This contributes evidence to the most current species definition of V. corymbosum as a single (mixed ploidy) species.Poster's Graduate Student Thesis Publication.Peer reviewed

    Steven F. Lawson is professor emeritus of history at Rutgers University. He holds a B.A. in history from City College of New York (1966), and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in American history from Columbia University (1967, 1974). Lawson began his teaching career at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg in 1972. He moved to the USF, Tampa campus in 1978, but continued to teach courses on the St. Pete Campus through the mid-1980s. He served as chair of the USF History Department from 1983 to 1986. From 1992 to 1998 he was head of the History Department at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and professor of history at Rutgers from 1999 to 2009. He has written extensively about civil rights, particularly about voting rights for African Americans in the post-World War II period, and is the author of eight books, thirty journal articles, book chapters, and essays. His books include Black Ballots: Voting Rights in the South, 1944-1969 (Columbia University Press, 1976), which won the Phi Alpha Theta Award for Best First Book in 1977; In Pursuit of Power: Southern Blacks and Electoral Politics, 1965-1982 (Columbia University Press, 1985), a CHOICE Outstanding Book for 1986; Running for Freedom: Black Politics in America since 1941 (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013), 4th edition; and (with Nancy A. Hewitt) Exploring American Histories: A Survey with Sources (Bedford-Macmillan, 2018), 3rd edition. Lawson has been a consultant for the National Parks Service, the National Civil Rights Museum, and the award-winning documentary film series Eyes on the Prize. He served as managing editor and then associate editor of Tampa Bay History from 1979 to 1992 and as co-director of the North Carolina Politics Project at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from 1995 to 1996.     Are all the 18 DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria equally useful for diagnosing ADHD and predicting comorbid conduct problems?

    In view of ICD-11 revision, we evaluate whether the 18 DSM-IV diagnostic items retained by DSM-5 could be further improved (i) in predicting ADHD 'caseness' and 'impairment' and (ii) discriminating ADHD without CD (ADHD - CD) cases from ADHD with CD (ADHD + CD) cases. In a multi-centre study sample consisting of 1497 ADHD probands and 291 unaffected subjects, 18 diagnostic items were examined for redundancy; then each item was evaluated for association with caseness, impairment and CD status using Classical Test Theory, Item-Response Theory and logistic regression methods. First, all 18 DSM-IV items contributed significantly and independently to the clinical diagnosis of ADHD. Second, not all the DSM-IV items carried equal weighting. "Often loses things", "forgetfulness" and "difficulty sustaining attention" mark severity for Inattentiveness (IA) items and "often unduly noisy", "exhibits a persistent pattern of restlessness", "leaves seat in class" and "often blurts out answers" for Hyperactivity/Impulsivity (HI) items. "Easily distracted", "inattentive to careless mistakes", "often interrupts" and "often fidgets" are associated with milder presentations. In the IA domain, "distracted" yields most information in the low-severity range of the latent trait, "careless" in the mid-severity range and "loses" in the high-severity range. In the HI domains, "interrupts" yields most information in the low-severity range and "motor" in the high-severity range. Third, all 18 items predicted impairment. Fourth, specific ADHD items are associated with ADHD + CD status. The DSM-IV diagnostic items were valid and not redundant; however, some carried more weight than others.     The spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR/NCrI) is a validated model of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) combined subtype, whereas a recently identified sub-strain of the Wistar Kyoto rat (WKY/NCrI) is a model of ADHD inattentive subtype. In this study, we first examined the expression of genes involved in dopamine signaling and metabolism in the dorsal striatum and ventral mesencephalon of these two rat strains, as well as three reference control strains (WKY/NHsd, WK/HanTac, and SD/NTac) using quantitative real time RT-PCR. Next, striatal dopamine transporter (DAT) density was determined by ligand binding assay in the two ADHD-like strains at different developmental stages and after methylphenidate treatment. In adult rats, the mRNA expression of DAT and tyrosine hydroxylase was elevated in SHR/NCrI and WKY/NCrI rats compared to control strains, with differences between SHR/NCrI and WKY/NCrI rats also evident. During normal development, changes of striatal DAT densities occurred in both strains with lower densities in WKY/NCrI compared to SHR/NCrI after day 25. Two-weeks methylphenidate treatment during different developmental stages was associated with decreased striatal DAT density in both rat strains compared to the non-treated rats with more pronounced effects followed prepubertal treatment. These results suggest differences in the pathophysiology of the combined versus the predominantly inattentive animal model of ADHD. Finally, treatment with methylphenidate might reduce elevated DAT levels more effectively in the combined subtype especially when applied before puberty. (C) 2010 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Dále je zde zmíněna problematika eutanazie, asistované sebevraždy a dříve vysloveného přání. V praktické část jsou analyzovány výsledky kvantitativního výzkumu, týkajícího se vnímání smrti u studentů oboru všeobecná sestra. Výzkum byl uskutečněn formou anonymního dotazníku mezi studenty 1. a 3. ročníku oboru všeobecná sestra. Stanoveny byly 3 dílčí cíle, které byly splněny. Zajímavý je výstup, že respondenti se strachem ze smrti převažoval pouze v 1. ročníku, ve 3. ročníku tvořili menšinu.     Návrh marketingového mixu pro společnost prodávající vrtáky do dlaždic

    Cílem této studie je navrhnout změny v marketingovém mixu vrtáků do dlaždic Společnosti X, které by měly pozitivní dopad na tržby produktu. K dosažení tohoto cíle byla provedena kombinace analýzy interních a externích sekundárních dat a kvalitativní analýzy ve formě částečně strukturovaných rozhovorů a techniky odborného posouzení. Kvalitativní část výzkumu byla provedena s regionálními produktovými manažery Společnosti X, kteří jsou považováni za odborníky na dané téma výzkumu. Na základě poznatků z výzkumu autor navrhuje prodloužit délku portfolia vrtáků do dlaždic o šest dalších průměrů a zahrnout další příslušenství, jako je adaptér a startovací sada s odsávačem prachu, který by vytvořil kompletní systém pro snadné a pohodlné vrtání do dlaždic. V rámci stanovení cen autor navrhl, aby současný cenový model byl aplikován i na nové části portfolia, protože byl určen jako přiměřený. Dále bylo navrženo zaměřit se na řetězec podnikových prodejen Společnosti X a vnitřní prodejní síly jako na primární prodejní kanály z důvodu získaní pozornosti pro daný produkt. Aby byla zajištěna efektivita propagační kampaně, bylo navrženo společné uvedení na trh s doplňkovým přístrojem a ikonickým kufříkem Společnosti X. Veškeré výsledky studie jsou podrobně popsány v závěrech této práce.The objective of this study is to propose changes within marketing mix of tile drill bits of Company X that would have a positive impact on product's revenues. To reach this goal a combination of analysis of internal and external secondary and qualitative analysis in a form of semi-structured interviews and expert judgement technique were conducted. The qualitative part of the research was executed with Company's X HUB product managers, who are considered to be experts on a given research topic. Based on the research author proposed to extend the length of tile drill bits portfolio with six additional diameters and to include additional accessories such as an adapter and starter kit with a dust collector that would create a full system for easy and convenient drilling into tiles. Within pricing author suggested to apply current pricing model also on the new parts of the portfolio since it was identified as adequate. Additionally, focus on Company’s X chain of stores and internal sales force as primary sales channels was recommended in order to create attention towards the product. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the promotional campaign, combined launch with complementary tool and the iconic Company’s X case for starter kit was proposed. All the outcomes of the study are detailly described in conclusions part of this thesis

Elongated and medially depressed prosternal apophysis (Fig. 119), surpassing the level of the procoxae. Elytra oval elongated, variable in length, subcylindrical, sometimes slightly striated and somewhat broader than the pronotum. Small aedeagus, fusiform parameres and barely longer than phallobase (Fig. 167).&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;b&gt;Comments&lt;/b&gt;: Species described from &ldquo;Lusitania&rdquo;, not from Andalusia as Vi&ntilde;olas &amp; Catagena (2005) mentioned. Steven (1828) described &lt;i&gt;Tentyria platyceps&lt;/i&gt; with at least one specimen from &ldquo;Lusitania&rdquo; (MNHUB). Data on the Steven&rsquo;s description agrees with the label that carries one of the syntypes listed as &lt;i&gt;T. curculionoides&lt;/i&gt; Herbst in the Berlin Museum, before to be rectified and attributed to &ldquo; &lt;i&gt;T. curculioides&lt;/i&gt; Ht. *&rdquo; (Fig. 231). This confusion is the reason of that the type of &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven has remained hidden to date, not appearing in the recording book of the Museum.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; Accordingly, &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven was an unknown species to Solier (1835) and Rosenhauer (1856). Hence these authors described &lt;i&gt;T. goudoti&lt;/i&gt; Solier (Fig. 232) and &lt;i&gt;T. modesta&lt;/i&gt; Rosenhauer (Fig. 233), with identical characters those of &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven, as indicated Kraatz (1865) and Schaum (1862) respectively. This verifies that these last authors knew the true identity of &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven, by intuiting the confusion between &lt;i&gt;T. curta&lt;/i&gt; Steven and &lt;i&gt;T. curculionoides&lt;/i&gt; Herbst (Kraatz 1865). From Kraatz (1865), &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven has been a species correctly interpreted by almost all authors.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; Reitter (1900), described &lt;i&gt;T. calcarata&lt;/i&gt; from Malaga, which was, dubiously, considered synonymy of &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven by Espa&ntilde;ol (1960), since it was the unique species of &lt;i&gt;Tentyria&lt;/i&gt; present in the mentioned locality whose description fits to that Reitter gave, even when this author does not include it in the group 3, close to &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; Later, Kaszab designated in litt. &ldquo; Holotypus &rdquo; of &lt;i&gt;T. calcarata&lt;/i&gt; Reitter a specimen from the MNHN labelled from Malaga (Fig. 234), and which corresponds to a variant specimen of the &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven (with the pronotum very transverse, and sub-elliptical), like the syntypes of &lt;i&gt;Tentyria platyceps&lt;/i&gt; v. &lt;i&gt;modesta&lt;/i&gt; Rosenhauer.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;b&gt; Designation of the Lectotype &lt;i&gt;Tentyria platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven, 1828, present designation&lt;/b&gt; :&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; The specimen of the typical series that bears the following labels (two of them old): small rectangular label, &ldquo;45574&rdquo; / big square label, &ldquo; &lt;i&gt;Orbiculata Akis&lt;/i&gt; F., &lt;i&gt;curculioides&lt;/i&gt; Ht. *, &lt;i&gt;Ten. The specimen that bears the following labels: &ldquo; &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; v. &lt;i&gt;modesta&lt;/i&gt; Rosh. Hispania / &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; v. &lt;i&gt;modesta&lt;/i&gt; Rosh. / Hispania Rosh.&rdquo;, is designated Lectotype (Fig. 233); the other that carrying the label: &ldquo;Hispania Rosh.&rdquo;, is designated Paralectotype.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt; &lt;b&gt;Geographical distribution:&lt;/b&gt; Widely distributed in central and southern Iberian Peninsula, especially in the inner areas. &lt;i&gt;T. platyceps&lt;/i&gt; Steven, has been also cited in the north of Morocco (T&aacute;nger) as &lt;i&gt;T. goudoti&lt;/i&gt; Solier (1835), Escalera (1914) and Kocher (1958).     Provenance-based trust for grid computing: Position Paper

    Current evolutions of Internet technology such as Web Services, ebXML, peer-to-peer and Grid computing all point to the development of large-scale open networks of diverse computing systems interacting with one another to perform tasks. Grid systems (and Web Services) are exemplary in this respect and are perhaps some of the first large-scale open computing systems to see widespread use - making them an important testing ground for problems in trust management which are likely to arise. From this perspective, today's grid architectures suffer from limitations, such as lack of a mechanism to trace results and lack of infrastructure to build up trust networks. These are important concerns in open grids, in which "community resources" are owned and managed by multiple stakeholders, and are dynamically organised in virtual organisations. Provenance enables users to trace how a particular result has been arrived at by identifying the individual services and the aggregation of services that produced such a particular output. Against this background, we present a research agenda to design, conceive and implement an industrial-strength open provenance architecture for grid systems. We motivate its use with three complex grid applications, namely aerospace engineering, organ transplant management and bioinformatics. Industrial-strength provenance support includes a scalable and secure architecture, an open proposal for standardising the protocols and data structures, a set of tools for configuring and using the provenance architecture, an open source reference implementation, and a deployment and validation in industrial context. The provision of such facilities will enrich grid capabilities by including new functionalities required for solving complex problems such as provenance data to provide complete audit trails of process execution and third-party analysis and auditing. As a result, we anticipate that a larger uptake of grid technology is likely to occur, since unprecedented possibilities will be offered to users and will give them a competitive edge
