    Accurate and automatic alignment of range surfaces

    This paper describes an automatic pipeline that is able to take a set of unordered range images and align them into a full 3D model. A global voting scheme is employed for view matching, inspired by 2D techniques for image mo- saicing. Then a multiple view registration approach is in- troduced, which aims at optimizing the alignment error si- multaneously for all the views. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the method

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau and Lawrence-Doniach models for layered ultracold Fermi gases

    We derive and study the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau and Lawrence-Doniach models describing a layered superfluid ultracold Fermi gas in optical lattices. We compute from the microscopic model the Josephson couplings entering the Lawrence-Doniach model across the crossover BCS-BEC passing from the 3D isotropic case to the quasi-2D one, showing that a model with only nearest-neighbor Josephson couplings is not adequate at the unitary limit (since the pairs have a diameter larger than the interlayer distance). We also show that the effective anisotropy of the system is strongly reduced at the unitary limit. Finally, we obtain a relation between the interlayer Josephson couplings and the Ginzburg-Landau masses: we find that using only couplings between adjacent planes is correct in the BEC side, while at the unitary limit one has to use also next-nearest-neighboring couplings

    Effect of random on-site energies on the critical temperature of a lattice Bose gas

    We study the effect of random on-site energies on the critical temperature of a non-interacting Bose gas on a lattice. In our derivation the on-site energies are distributed according a Gaussian probability distribution function having vanishing average and variance ν_0^2. By using the replicated action obtained by averaging on the disorder, we perform a perturbative expansion for the Green functions of the disordered system. We evaluate the shift of the chemical potential induced by the disorder and we compute, for ν_0^2 ≪ 1, the critical temperature for condensation. We find that, for large filling, disorder slightly enhances the critical temperature for condensation

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Critical temperature of non-interacting Bose gases on disordered lattices

    For a non-interacting Bose gas on a lattice we compute the shift of the critical temperature for condensation when random-bond and on-site disorder are present. We evidence that the shift depends on the space dimensionality D and the filling fraction f. For D ->∞ (infinite range model), using results from the theory of random matrices, we show that the shift of the critical temperature is negative, depends on f, and vanishes only for large f. The connections with analogous results obtained for the spherical model are discussed. For D = 3 we find that, for large f, the critical temperature Tc is enhanced by disorder and that the relative shift does not appreciably depend on f; in contrast, for small f, Tc decreases, in agreement with the results obtained for a Bose gas in the continuum.
