Average Case Complexity of Unbounded Fanin Circuits
Hastad has shown that functions like PARITY cannot be computed by unbounded fanin circuits of small depth and polynomial size. We generalize this result in two directions. First, we obtain the same tight lower bound for the average case. This is done by estimating the average delay -- the natural generalization of circuit depth to an average case measure -- of unbounded fanin circuits of polynomial size, resp. their error probability given an upper bound on the maximal delay. These bounds are obtained by extending the probabilistic restriction method to an average case setting. Secondly, we completely classify the set of parallel prefix functions -- for which PARITY is just one example -- with respect to their average delay in unbounded fanin circuits of a given size. Lower Bounds for Depth Three Arithmetic Circuits with Small Bottom Fanin
Shpilka and Wigderson (CCC 99) had posed the problem of proving exponential lower bounds for (nonhomogeneous) depth three arithmetic circuits with bounded bottom fanin over a field F of characteristic zero. We resolve this problem by proving a N^(Omega(d/t)) lower bound for (nonhomogeneous) depth three arithmetic circuits with bottom fanin at most t computing an explicit N-variate polynomial of degree d over F.
Meanwhile, Nisan and Wigderson (CC 97) had posed the problem of proving superpolynomial lower bounds for homogeneous depth five arithmetic circuits. Over fields of characteristic zero, we show a lower bound of N^(Omega(sqrt(d))) for homogeneous depth five circuits (resp. also for depth three circuits) with bottom fanin at most N^(u), for any fixed u < 1. This resolves the problem posed by Nisan and Wigderson only partially because of the added restriction on the bottom fanin (a general homogeneous depth five circuit has bottom fanin at most N)

An empirical study of refactoring in the context of FanIn and FanOut coupling
The aim of refactoring is to reduce software complexity and hence simplify the maintenance process. In this paper, we explore the impact of refactorings on "FanIn" and "FanOut" coupling metrics through extraction of refactoring data from multiple releases of five Java open-source systems, We first considered how a single refactoring modified these metric values, what happened when refactorings had been applied to a single class in unison and finally, what influence a set of refactorings had on the shape of Fan In and Fan Out distributions. Results indicated that, on average, refactored classes tended to have larger FanIn and Fan Out values when compared with non-refactored classes. Where evidence of multiple (different) refactorings applied to the same class was found, the net effect (in terms of FanIn and Fan Out coupling values) was negligible
Comporre il vuoto: architetture e spazi pubblici per il centro storico di San Giovanni in Persiceto
La presente tesi nasce dalla volontà di indagare gli aspetti che competono i rapporti tra edilizia di nuova costruzione e centri storici in cui questi oggetti vanno ad inserirsi. Nello specifico l’obiettivo è quello di poter creare una ricucitura del tessuto urbano del centro storico di San Giovanni in Persiceto, che, come molti altri paesi italiani, è stato profondamente segnato dall’epopea immobiliare che ha caratterizzato la ricostruzione post bellica negli anni ’50 e ’60.
Per poter quindi ottenere un quadro conoscitivo adeguato del paese, si è operato in primo luogo con un’indagine conoscitiva storica, circa l’evoluzione edile e urbana del centro cittadino, che è caratterizzato da un borgo rotondo di origine longobarda. A questa fase, che ha permesso di ricavare il contesto di inserimento è seguita una mappatura di quelli che sono indicati come i virus all’interno del tessuto, tra i quali individuare l’immobile oggetto di intervento.
Si è quindi scelto di operare una demolizione e ricostruzione dell’edificio per le opere parrocchiali G. Fanin, a cui si accompagna una riqualificazione urbana delle piazze ad esso antistanti, che rappresentano la “porta di ingresso” al centro storico cittadino.
In primo luogo c’è la ricomposizione dell’edificio Fanin, in modo che si inserisca adeguatamente nel contesto urbano preesistente. Vi è poi l’ampliamento della Biblioteca comunale che permette di riproporre l’andamento del Borgo Rotondo. Questo processo edile è accompagnato da un ragionamento sugli spazi aperti che circondano questi edifici, con la volontà di ritornare ad una dimensione pedonale delle piazze (realizzando quindi un parcheggio interrato) e ricreare quella distinzione tra ambito rurale e ambito urbano, andata perduta, grazie alla riorganizzazione di Parco Petazzzoni.
Sebbene il progetto sia solo una proposta, si è voluto accompagnare il processo compositivo-formale del nuovo teatro all’interno del palazzo Fanin, con la progettazione acustica di tale sala

Can large fanin circuits perform reliable computations in the presence of faults?
AbstractFor ordinary circuits with a fixed upper bound on the fanin of its gates it has been shown that logarithmic redundancy is necessary and sufficient to overcome random hardware faults (noise). Here, we consider the same question for unbounded fanin circuits which in the fault-free case can compute Boolean functions in sublogarithmic depth. Now the details of the fault model become more important. One may assume that only gates, resp. only wires may deliver wrong values, or that both gates and wires may behave faulty. The fault tolerance depends on the types of gates that are used, and whether the error probabilities are known exactly or only an upper bound for them. Concerning the first distinction the two most important models are circuits consisting of and- and or-gates with arbitrarily many inputs, and circuits built from the more general type of threshold gates. We will show that in case of faulty and/or-circuits as well as threshold circuits an increase of fanin and size cannot be traded for a depth reduction if the error probabilities are unknown. Gates with large fanin are of no use if errors may occur. Circuits of arbitrary size, but fixed depth can compute only a tiny subset of all Boolean functions reliably. Only in case of threshold circuits and exactly known error probabilities redundancy is able to compensate faults. We describe a transformation from fault-free to fault-tolerant circuits that is optimal with respect to depth keeping the circuit size polynomial
