The Internal and the External\uef\ubcOn Fang Xiu\ue2s Writing of the History of Sinophone Malaysian Literature and His Dilemma
As a member of the literati from China before World War II, Fang Xiu entered the Sinophone Malaysian literary scene and wrote the first local literary history in Chinese in the 1960s. Since then, Sinophone Malaysian literature or Mahua literature, has become an object of study in academic field. In the 1990s, some Malaysian scholars abroad voiced a desire to rewrite the history of Sinophone Malaysian literature, and the history of Malaysian Chinese literature gradually received attention from scholars and critics. To rewrite literary history, we should make an objective evaluation and analysis of the existing literary history. In this context, this thesis studies the internal and external dilemmas of Fang Xiu's literary history writing, and aims to present the form and content of Fang Xiu's literary history and the complex history of the birth and development of the Sinophone literature. I also attempt to analyze the life of Fang Xiu, trying to outline the process of the migration of Malayan consciousness of literati from China. By restoring the historical context of Fang Xiu's literary history writing, one need to understand his version of Sinophone Malaysian literary history, and to objectively evaluate his working of literary history. In order to consider the direction of rewriting literary History, we can choose to avoid the dilemma of scrutiny. After all, literature is human literature. Literary history, as the history of a literary space, should adhere to the human standard and go beyond the boundary of literary space. By revealing the attributes of literature (works), we can establish the self-interpretation of human being (authors and readers), or the writing purpose of literary history
