It’s unquestionable that the original report of
Dr. Alejandro Palomo of J Urol 1949[1] (in prelaparoscopic
era) refers to an open retroperitoneal
approach with an en bloc section of testicular vascular
bundle, and according to the Author, this can be
implemented without compromising the testicular
vitality. From the original drawings: “Veins and artery
have been freed and are removed after clamps have
been applied. Proximal and distal stumps of the vessels
are ligated by transfixations sutures”.[1

Recognition of Emotion from Inverted Schematic Drawings of Faces
The present study investigated whether facial expressions of emotion are recognized holistically, i.e., all at once as an entire unit, as faces are or featurally as other nonface stimuli. Evidence for holistic processing of faces comes from a reliable decrement in recognition performance when faces are presented inverted rather than upright. If emotion is recognized holistically, then recognition of facial expressions of emotion should be impaired by inversion. To test this, participants were shown schematic drawings of faces showing one of six emotions (surprise, sadness, anger, happiness, disgust, and fear) in either an upright or inverted orientation and were asked to indicate the emotion depicted. Participants were more accurate in the upright than in the inverted orientation, providing evidence in support of holistic recognition of facial emotion. Because recognition of facial expressions of emotion is important in social relationships, this research may have implications for treatment of some social disorders. </jats:p

Optimistic and ability biases in pilots’ decisions and perceptions of risk regarding VFR flight into IMC
Aircraft accidents resulting from attempted visual flight rules (VFR) flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) continue to be one of the leading causes of fatalities in aviation. The aim of this study is to determine the role which two decision biases— optimistic bias and ability bias—may play in pilots’ decisions and perceptions of risk regarding VFR flight into IMC. A questionnaire designed to test for the presence of these biases was administered to 57 pilots enrolled in a university flight-training program and 103 general aviation pilots attending two FAA aviation safety seminars. Respondents were asked to rate their chances of experiencing an accident due to inadvertent VFR flight into IMC and their ability to avoid or successfully fly out of such conditions. Results indicate that VFR pilots are overly optimistic regarding their chances of experiencing a VFR-into-IMC accident, and are overconfident in their ability to both avoid and successfully fly out of IMC

Post-encoding Verbalization Impairs Transfer on Artifical Grammar Tasks
In a series of studies, Schooler and Engstler-Schooler
(1990) showed that verbalization of previously
encountered non-verbal stimuli can impair subsequent memory performance. The present study investigates the possibility that the verbal disruption of non-verbal
processes, called verbal overshadowing, m a y be
applied to implicit learning, i.e., where what is
learned is difTicult to verbalize. One frequently
studied area of implicit learning is artificial grammars
(e.g., Reber & Lewis, 1977). In the artificial
grammar research, it has been shown that subjects can
learn information about regularities in letter strings
generated from a fmite state grammar, as measured by
transfer tests, while being unable to usefully state
what those regularities are. The apparent disparity
between subjects' competent performance on artificial
grammar tasks and their inabiUty to explain the rules
of those tasks suggests the possibility that
verbalization following memorization of artificial
grammar strings may impair subjects' performance on
a transfer task. In this study, subjects memorized a
subset of grammatical letter strings, then half of them
verbalized the rules they learned during memorization.
The verbal subjects performed significantly worse
than the non-verbal subjects on a transfer task,
providing preliminary evidence that verbalization may
impair transfer when the learned information is
difficult to verbaliz
Vida en Marte: Historia, avances, investigación actual y perspectivas
A quest for life on Mars (LoMars) started in the early 1960s when the most prestigious scientific journals published several research articles. According to Elsevier’s Scopus database, the rise in annual literature production started in the late 1990s, most likely associated with the launch of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) first rover, Sojourner, in 1996. The number of articles on Mars will likely continue to rise sharply, given that the launch and landing of the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover are critical to discovering and understanding the present or past life on the planet. Thus far, the USA has dominated in the number of citations and collaborations related to Mars research, given its facilities equipped with relevant infrastructure and researchers’ capacity to explore the Solar System beyond Earth. Most of these frequently cited papers report observational and theoretical research results. However, a highly cited article is based on analytical studies of a unique Martian meteorite (i.e., Allan Hills 84001) found in Antarctica. It is expected that the future sample return mission associated with the Perseverance Rover caching system could increase the LoMars research exponentially in the coming decades if Martian samples are successfully brought to Earth. Based on the total number of publications on LoMars, the most influential institute, the author, and the journal are Caltech, C.P. McKay, and Icarus, respectively. Both the institute and the author are directly affiliated with NASA, indicating the leadership offered by the organization in LoMars research.Las preguntas sobre la vida en Marte comenzaron en los años sesenta cuando varios artículos de investigación se publicaron en las revistas científicas más prestigiosas.
