    Sarcoidosis and Thyroid Autoimmunity

    Most of the studies have shown a higher risk for subclinical and clinical hypothyroidism, antithyroid autoantibodies [overall antithyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb)], and in general, thyroid autoimmunity, overall in the female gender in patients with sarcoidosis (S). A significantly higher prevalence of clinical hypothyroidism and Graves’ disease was also described in female S patients with respect to controls. Gallium-67 (Ga-67) scyntigraphy in S patients, in the case of thyroid uptake, suggests the presence of aggressive autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism. For this reason, ultrasonography and thyroid function should be done in the case of Ga-67 thyroid uptake. In conclusion, thyroid function, TPOAb measurement, and ultrasonography should be done to assess the clinical profile in female S patients, and the ones at high risk (female individuals, with TPOAb positivity, and hypoechoic and small thyroid) should have periodically thyroid function evaluations and suitable treatments

    Acoustic Emission is a Non-destructive Testing method, widely used for monitoring the mechanical behaviour of steel and concrete structures. In particular, the method can be characterized and evaluate cracks or other defects under the stress of the structures. The present research aims to investigate the feasibility to evaluate the adhesion of the rebar to concrete using the Acoustic Emission Technique. For this purpose, the Active Acoustic Emission technique has been used for rebar-reinforced concrete beams. An acoustic Emission test has been made on both conditions of rebars, with/without adhesion. The fundamental parameter to distinguish adhesion and non-adhesion rebar has been the attenuation of acoustic energy, generated by the acoustic sensors, activated as ultrasonic transducers. The results have been very promising; the difference of attenuation between adhesion and non-adhesion rebar showed high enough to evaluate the condition of rebars

    Elastic–plastic frictionless indentation analysis of a functionally graded vitreous enameled steel plate by a rigid spherical indenter

    Elastic-plastic frictionless indentation of a functionally graded (FG) vitreous enameled steel plate with finite dimensions by a rigid spherical punch is studied in this paper. The problem is studied both experimentally and by using ABAQUS finite element package. The results obtained from ABAQUS simulations are compared to experimental results to check the validity of the ABAQUS model. In the simulations, the plastic deformation of the constituting phases of the plate is taken into account by using a volume fraction based model called TTO model. The validity of the TTO estimation of the modulus of elasticity is examined and verified by nano-indentation technique. The ABAQUS model is used to conduct a parametric analysis on the effect of parameters such as plate dimensions and thickness, indenter diameter and material properties distribution on the force-indentations curves of the plate and stress distribution underneath the punch. The simulations show that increasing the overall stiffness of the graded medium increases the stress mismatch at the interface of the plate constituting layers regardless of the layers thicknesses. In addition, the acquired results illustrated that for plates with similar thickness and material property distribution, changing the span does not affect the force-indentation curves

    A case of Graves' disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination

    Autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune endocrine diseases (AIED), are thought to develop following environmental exposure in patients with genetic predisposition. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and vaccines against it could represent new environmental triggers for AIED. We report a patient, with history of vitiligo vulgaris and 8 years of type 2 diabetes, who came to our institution because of fever, weight loss, asthenia and thyrotoxicosis occurred 4 weeks later the administration of BNT162B2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Clinical, biochemical and instrumental work-up demonstrated Graves' disease and autoimmune diabetes mellitus. The occurrence of these disorders could be explained through different mechanism such as autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA syndrome), mRNA "self-adjuvant" effect, molecular mimicry between human and viral proteins and immune disruption from external stimuli. However further studies are needed to better understand the underlying pathogenesis of AIED following SARS-CoV-2 vaccine

    Role of grinding induced surface residual stress on probability of stress corrosion cracks initiation in 316L austenitic stainless steel in 3.5% sodium chloride aqueous solution

    Experimental investigation on the relation of grinding induced surface residual stresses (RS) with stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility and electrochemical behaviour was conducted on 316L austenitic stainless steel in 3.5% sodium chloride aqueous solution. Grinding was done with the same process parameters to lower the effect of other known parameters on SCC initiation. The corrosion behaviour was characterised by Potentiodynamic and galvanostatic tests. The latest was performed under fixed current density in metastable region. There was a strong relationship between the electrochemical results with RS magnitude. Microscopic investigation showed that the RS induced by grinding could not be the reason for SCC and the dominant defect observed was pitting for all the specimens. The time needed for the breakdown of the passive layer was exponentially related to RS level but the propagation of pits was nearly the same for all the specimens

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
