No full textThis book centers around a dialogue between Roger Penrose and Emanuele Severino about one of most intriguing topics of our times, the comparison of artificial intelligence and natural intelligence, as well as its extension to the notions of human and machine consciousness. Additional insightful essays by Mauro D’Ariano, Federico Faggin, Ines Testoni, Giuseppe Vitiello and an introduction of Fabio Scardigli complete the book and illuminate different aspects of the debate. Although from completely different points of view, all the authors seem to converge on the idea that it is almost impossible to have real “intelligence” without a form of “consciousness”. In fact, consciousness, often conceived as an enigmatic “mirror” of reality (but is it really a mirror?), is a phenomenon under intense investigation by science and technology, particularly in recent decades. No full textIl Volume “Dopo la notizia peggiore. Elaborazione del morire nella relazione” ripensare in modo autenticamente interdisciplinare il rapporto tra vita che finisce ed è ancora vita e la morte che arriva in cui consiste il morire. La letteratura internazionale rispetto a questo ambito è ormai ragguardevole, ma perlopiù specialistica. Sebbene possano vantare un certo primato i testi relativi alla terapia del dolore, alla psico-oncologia e alla bioetica, di fatto manca un’opera capace di integrare le tematiche tanatologiche con quelle relative alla molteplicità dei saperi che intervengono nella presa il carico della persona morente e della sua costellazione di rapporti umani. Il Volume è diviso in due parti:
• La prima parte “Comprendere, comunicare e innovare: tra umanizzazione e deumanizzazione della cura” considera le questioni legate all’angoscia portata da una diagnosi/prognosi infausta, entrando nel merito dell’approccio integrato centrato sul paziente. Vengono quindi discussi i temi sempre più complessi relativi ai cambiamenti che il simultaneus care implica, specialmente rispetto all’innovazione terapeutica. A novel approach to the study of magnetohydrodynamic effect on tritium transport in WCLL breeding blanket of DEMO
No full textThe Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) breeding blanket is one of the European blanket designs proposed for DEMO reactor. Tritium can permeate into the different structural materials, arising potential issues concerning the fuel self-sufficiency and can be lost into the environment with consequent radiological hazard for the population. Within this frame, a tritium transport analysis is fundamental to evaluate tritium retention in LiPb (15.7 at. % Li) and in the structures and tritium permeation fluxes into the cooling water. To assess this study, a portion of the breeder unit of the outboard equatorial module of the WCLL was modelled. The buoyancy forces and the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect were also included. The final system of partial differential equations was solved with a novel approach through COMSOL Multiphysics. The coupled MHD and heat transfer system of equations was solved performing a transient simulation, that was stopped when the main average variables, temperature and velocity, reached a stable condition. In this way, it was possible to determine the lithium-lead velocity field and to use it as an input for the transport analysis. Tritium transport was modelled by using the input data of tritium generation rate and volumetric power deposition coming from an ad-hoc Monte Carlo simulation realized with MCNP software. Moreover, the transport analysis included advection-diffusion of tritium into the LiPb, transfer of tritium from the liquid interface towards the steel, diffusion of tritium inside the steel, transfer of tritium from the steel towards the coolant, advection-diffusion of diatomic tritium into the coolant

The hospice as a learning environment: A follow-up, qualitative study with palliative care professionals and school teachers involved in a previous death education intervention.
No full textIn Western society, the topic of death has been removed from everyday life and replaced with medical language. Such censorship does not reduce individuals’ fear of death, but rather limits their ability to elaborate their experiences of death, thus generating negative effects. The objective of this follow-up qualitative study was to detect how and if death education can help to improve individuals’ relationship with death and enhance care environments like hospices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with palliative care professionals and teachers who had taken part in a death education initiative three years earlier. The results confirmed the initiative’s positive effect on both palliative care professionals and teachers. The participants reported that the education initiative helped them to positively modify their perspective on death, end-of-life care, and their own relationship to life, as well as their perception of community attitudes towards the hospice, which seemed to become less discriminatory. This study confirmed that school education initiatives can usefully create continuity between hospices and local communities. This project provided an educational space wherein it was possible for participants to elaborate their experiences in relation to death and to re-evaluate and appreciate hospices

The Other Side of Italian Thought:Emanuele Severino
No full textContemporary Italian philosophy has become recognized internationally as a distinct tradition, often associated with a post-Foucauldian notion of biopolitics and essayistic forms enabling a quick reaction to the affairs of the day yet without compromising the systematic ambitions of philosophical thought. But Emanuele Severino (1929–2020) shows a radically different side of Italian philosophy: unabashedly metaphysical, uncompromisingly Parmenidean, and increasingly recognized as one of the most remarkable and challenging thinkers of the twentieth century — in the words of Italian philosopher Massimo Cacciari, the only alternative to Martin Heidegger. Over the course of six decades, from La struttura originaria (1958) to Testimoniando il destino (2019), Severino developed a most original and untimely philosophical project, which attempts to think the relationship between nihilism and the tradition of the West, the incontrovertibility of the truth of being, the contradiction of becoming, the eternity of all beings. Severino came to refer to his work as to ‘the language that testifies to destiny’, namely a testimony to the eternal and necessary structure of the appearing and disappearing of the eternal beings — the ‘destiny of necessity’ (Destino della necessità, 1980). The symposium The Other Side of Italian Thought: Emanuele Severino aims to introduce the principal axes along which Severino’s thought can be unfolded to an international audience. The symposium thus joins an increasing number of international projects of the last few years: the first edited translation into English of one of Severino’s most important works, The Essence of Nihilism (2016, A. Carrera and I. Testoni, eds), the foundation of an international journal dedicated to Severino’s thought, Eternity & Contradiction: Journal of Fundamental Ontology (G. Goggi, ed.), as well as the forthcoming English translations of Severino’s Law and Chance (Legge e caso, 1979) and Beyond Language (Oltre il linguaggio, 1992) (trans. D. Sacco)

No full textIn uno scenario globale dove il tempo è sempre più prezioso, e dove ogni azione
viene gestita in maniera smart e intelligente, questo lavoro cerca di allineare a
questi standard anche un ambito come quello della rilevazione e della prevenzione
dei danni, che al momento spesso si trova a rimanere bloccato in colli di bottiglia.
Ne sono un esempio la necessità di un ispezione ed un intervento umano che spesso
richiede tempi lunghi, e valuta la qualità dell'intervento solamente sulla base delle
competenze dei tecnici specializzati, che nonostante tutto restano esseri umani e
quindi capaci di dare interpretazioni diverse agli stessi dati.
Per fare fronte a tale necessità nasce Intelligent Structures, uno studio di ricerca
universitario che ha progettato, sviluppato ed implementato un sistema che si pone
come obiettivo quello di rendere intelligenti le strutture su cui viene applicato.
Per strutture intelligenti si intendono elementi fisici che sono in grado di autodia-
gnosticarsi e di capire in autonomia quale è il loro stato di salute attuale, quali
sono le zone interessate da eventuali guasti o danneggiamenti, e fornire indicazio-
ni riguardo la posizione, l'entità del danneggiamento, il momento in cui questo è
avvenuto e l'intesità dell'urto che ha provocato il problema
