Investigating links among urban sprawl and environmental justice indicators in US territories

    No full text
Sprawl often characterizes unsustainable, car-dependent, and low-density urban development at the edges of cities. Much research has documented the relationship among sprawl and air pollutant concentrations and many studies have addressed sprawl’s social implications, especially for low-income and minority groups. However, limited research has investigated the links between areas with increased levels of sprawl and air pollution, where vulnerable populations reside. This paper brings together the refined sprawl dataset from Smart Growth America and selected environmental justice indicators on air pollution-ozone and air toxics- from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool (EJSCREEN), in a national-level analysis of U.S. territories. Through Pearson correlations and a series of logistic regressions, the significant connection of sprawl and ozone concentrations is shown, in areas with more low-income, and less educated groups with higher percentages of children. On the other hand, while air toxics cancer risk is higher in areas with low-income, and linguistically isolated racial minorities, it has lower levels in more sprawled areas. Upon a closer look, it is shown that only selected dimensions of compactness link to higher cancer risk, while aspects such as a higher mix of jobs may have a reverse effect on it. These findings provide new directions in the ongoing discussion of sustainable urban development patterns and suggest that the focus should be on development that can promote better air quality, while simultaneously reducing social vulnerability to environmental challenges, with additional benefits for local innovation and community building.Peer reviewe

Translated by Pedro Sepúlveda Zambrano (UCSH).

In the present work, an attempt is made by the author to attribute all the legal and sociological elements that compile the work of Ioanna Karystiani. In particular, it reflects the way in which she gathers her material, before each of her works, her methodological tools, as well as her own views on law which derive from her general attitude towards life. In addition, the study focuses on the analysis of each literary novel within a framework of legal reasoning, but also sociological problems.ΠΜΣ Πολιτιστική Διαχείριση, Επικοινωνία και Μέσα, κατεύθυνση Επικοινωνία και Ρητορική των Μέσω

In this industrialized world, technology has invaded our life in such a level where behind every product a complex manufacturing process with high transportation costs being hidden. Designing a product itself is not enough anymore; the whole manufacturing procedure needs to be included in the design.Especially when product design meets acoustic engineering, the design should not only fulfil the acoustic and aesthetic qualities but also take into consideration the cost factor. This is translated into the wise use of material, transportation, easy assembly and maintenance. At the same time, the target group is every single person that is called to participate in the assembly procedure, with no expertise knowledge, which adds extra challenge in the design procedure. Less is more, as Mies van der Rohe stated. This research taking a step back and revaluates the product design principle for acoustic panels. Having as starting point the HELIX panel designed by Panayiotis Hadjisergis and Ioanna Christia, during Bucky Lab course of 2015 fall, the target is to keep the advantages of this panel while improving the acoustic performance and keeping the manufacturing process as simple as possible. The target of Helix panel was to provide a flexible solution regarding acoustics and assembly. The advantages of this project were further developed into the STRAWS project. The acoustic principle used is quarter wavelength tubes and combined to a cheap ordinary product, as straws, a broadband sound absorbing unitized panel is designed.Until now there are lots of products that are made for acoustic but none of them fullfil so many different design needs. This research proposes an already existing product which by implementing acoustic principles, can be applied in open-plan officess. In this way the acoustic panel will not only be suitable for a wide range of frequencies but also designed in a way that uses little amount of material, without taking up a big space and being able to be re-used in a different environment.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Building Technolog

Ioanna Tsatsos was an important Greek poet of the 20th century whose work has not been sufficiently studied. The author is still associated with the political figure of her husband Constantinos Tsatsos or that of her brother, the poet Yorgos Seferis. We consider, however, that her poetic work is not at all unworthy of that of other poets of her generation. We offer here a first approach to her poetry, both from the formal and thematic point of view, in order to provide a general view of the poetic work of this autor.

Plasmon resonance spectral peak shift due to morphing of gold nanoparticles for strain sensing

    No full text
The plasmon resonance spectral peak of a gold spherical nanoparticle (NP) will shift when the NP shape is changed from sphere to spheroid. This may be used as a novel strain detection method with gold NPs embedded in a medium of different refractive index (RI). Applying a strain to the external medium will cause a change in the shape of the NP from spherical to spheroidal. In our previous work, it was found that when the RI change of the medium surrounding the NPs is close to zero, the shape change induced plasmon resonance spectral peak shift will become important. In order to obtain only the wavelength shift values caused by the shape change of the NPs, the RI of medium surrounding the gold NPs is set at a constant of 1.45 and the RI of the gold NP is assumed unchanged. The T-matrix method is used to calculate the scattered light and light extinction by the NP morphing. The diameters of the gold NPs are set from 100 nm to 400 nm, with the size interval at 10 nm, to cover a wide size range for typical sizes of gold spherical NPs. The spectra of the light scattering and light extinction were calculated on the Delft University high performance computing cluster. The results show that the plasmon resonance spectral peak shift is related to the size of the NPs. Larger sizes of gold NPs have larger peak shift values, but there is an inflection point around 200 nm and the bandwidth of the resonance peak becomes larger which will cause a difficulty in precisely locating the peak. Διπλωματική εργασία--Πανεπιστήμιο Μακεδονίας, Θεσσαλονίκη, 2014.The purpose of this research is to examine the role of the Russian and Turkish pipelines to the European Union’s energy security. In an age of emerging energy challenges and constant redrawing of the supply and transit maps, the geopolitical energy implications are of high importance. The European Union with its strong economy and heavy energy demand is a major player in the international energy arena. For the purposes of the paper I hypothesized that the Russian and Turkish pipelines are competitive to each other and complementary with regards to EU energy security, in the sense that the EU can decide from where it draws its resources. My hypothesis was based on the realist school of thought and was examined through a comparative analysis between the Russian and Turkish pipelines. To measure the significance of the current and projected pipelines as well as the energy relationship between Russia, Turkey and the European Union I employed four codes during my research conceptualization; pipelines (their number and performance), national gains (political and economic gains for Russia and Turkey in utilizing their pipelines), political will (of Russia and Turkey in promoting their pipelines to the EU market) and ways of influence (of the European Union towards Russian and Turkish energy policy). The result of my research affirms the complexity of the energy relations between the three shareholders and supports my hypothesis. An issue that was beyond the scope and focus of the current paper but was presented as extremely important for further academic studies is the role of the United States in affecting EU energy security policy and in unilaterally supporting pipeline projects across the regional chessboard to promote its own political goals and ambitions
