Relationship between changes in regulation, corporate governance, and firm performance: Mexico’s case
The present dissertation is dedicated to study the regulation of corporate governance practices and performance relationships. Several studies have been conducted around the world, based on how the good corporate governance practices impact the performance of the firm. Good corporate governance is related to the protection of the investor rights, and could be established by changes in law, regulation procedures, contracts, control, and normative procedures or product market influence. The present research is related to the regulation, law changes around corporate governance practices in Mexico, and how those changes influence the performance of the firm. The Mexican economy is affected by globalization, financial market integration, and potential investment opportunities around the world; part of the answer of those changes is regulation and investor protection rights
Maternal separation induces retinal and peripheral blood mononuclear cell alterations across the lifespan of female rats
Early life stress alters the function and feedback regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis, and can contribute to neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration by modifying peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) activity. The retina, as part of the nervous system, is sensitive to immune changes induced by stress. However, the consequences of stress experienced at an early age on retinal development have not yet been elucidated. Here we aimed to evaluate the impact of maternal separation (MatSep) across three stages of the lifespan (adolescent, adult, and aged) on the retina, as well as on progression through the cell cycle and mitochondrial activity in PBMCs from female Wistar rats. Newborn pups were separated from their mother from postnatal day (PND) 2 until PND 14 for 3 h/day. Retinal analysis from the MatSep groups showed architectural alterations such as a diminished thickness of retinal layers, as well as increased expression of proinflammatory markers DJ-1, Iba-1, and CD45 and the gliotic marker GFAP. Additionally, MatSep disrupted the cell cycle and caused long-term increases in mitochondrial activity in PBMCs from adolescent and adult rats. Changes in the cell cycle profile of the PBMCs from aged MatSep rats were undetected. However, these PBMCs exhibited increased sensitivity to H2O2-induced oxidative stress in vitro. Therefore, these results suggest that early life stress can have long-term effects on retinal structure and function, possibly elicited by neonatal immune preconditioning

The electronic structure calculations were done using the M062X hybrid exchange-correlation functional in conjunction with the 6-31G** basis sets for oxygen and hydrogen. For the iodine and samarium atoms the Stuttgart Koln relativistic effective core potentials were utilized with their associated valence basis sets. Starting from the optimized geometry of SmI2 embeded in the microsolvation environment, we find a swift substitution of the iodine ions by eight tightly bound water molecules around Sm(II). Through the Sm-O radial distribution function and the evolution of the Sm-O distances, the present study predicts a first rigid Sm(II) solvation shell from 2.6,to 3.4 (A) over circle, whose integration leads to a coordination number of 8.4 water molecules, and a second softer solvation sphere from 3.5 to ca. 6 (A) over circle. The Sm(II)-O radial distribution function is in excellent agreement with that reported for Sr2+ from:EXATS studies, a fact that can be explained because Sr2+ and Sm2+ have almost identical ionic radii (ca. 1.26 (A) over circle) and coordination numbers: 8 for Sr2+ and 8.4 for Sm2+. The theoretical EXAFS spectrum was obtained from the BOMD trajectory and is discussed in the light ofthe experimental spectra for Sm(III). Once microsolvation is achieved, no water exchange events were found to occur around Sm2+, in agreement with the experimental data for Eu2+ (which has a nearly identical charge-to-ionic radius relation as Sm2+),-where the mean residence time of a water molecule in [Eu(H2O)(8)](2+) is known to be ca. 230 ps
Un llano de colores.: Cancionero infantil de los llanos orientales de Colombia
The research-creation project: A colorful plain: Colombian Eastern Plain Child Songbook consists of the intervention by German Alejandro Barragan Ramirez of a repertoire of eight unpublished songs composed by Astrid Carolina Arenas within the Joropo musical system. The harmonic arrangements and accompanying melodies were made considering the melodic lines, and using different forms of re-harmonization worked in the analysis and creation workshops taken in the course of the Master in Colombian Music of the El Bosque University, in Bogota, Colombia. The arranging and interpretative work proposed by the author is based on the concept of children's world, a concept that starts from the consideration that the children's world is fantastic; it is a world without frontiers, where magic and imagination floods everything around it. The musical aspects and the coherent articulation between music and text are reflected in a staging and a sound document, which seeks to enrich the scarce children's songbook of the traditional Colombian-Venezuelan eastern plain popular music, not only highlighting their cultural traditions but emphasizing the content of the texts, seeking to be consistent with children's spirit, with compositions that underline region's values, traditions, myths and legends, flora and fauna.
The productivity effects of decentralized reforms - an analysis of the Chinese industrial reforms
The empirical literature on the effects of ownership has not distinguished between the effects of ownership and the effects of control. It has also generally ignored the dynamic effects of various ownership and control rights. Using a rich set of panel data about changes in China's state-owned enterprises, the author examines the static and dynamic effects of decentralizing ownership and control rights. He finds that productivity and growth rates improved significantly when reform improved the incentives for managers and employees to learn and to work hard - for example by decentralizing the rights to control wages, make production decisions, and appoint new managers. Increasing profit-retention rates and adopting performance contracts - conventionally viewed as the most important reforms for China's state enterprises - did not improve productivity much. Overall, decentralization accounted for a least 42 percent of productivity growth in Chinese state enterprises in the 1980s. Much of that gain came from improvements in the growth rate of productivity rather than in improved levels of productivity.Labor Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Public Health Promotion,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Municipal Financial Management
The Role of Education and Learning by Experience in the Performance of Microenterprises
AbstractThis paper evaluates the role of human capital in the productivity performance of Mexican microenterprises by estimating productivity functions using standard econometric techniques. Two sources of human capital are analyzed: formal education acquired at educational institutions and business experience of the entrepreneurs. The data is originated from a sample of microenterprises operating in challenged neighborhoods of the Mexican province of Baja California. The estimated productive structure of the enterprises in the sample and the effects of human capital, suggest that this source of capital plays a role not only in terms of determining the productivity level across enterprises but also in enhancing long run productivity, bringing some implications about the sources of productivity available in these enterprises and the orientation of the entrepreneurship policies for developing countries
