    Fractionated Satellite Systems for Earth Observation Missions: Feasibility and Performances Analyses

    This paper aims at investigating the feasibility of fractionated satellite architecture for Earth observation missions. The payload fractionation, consisting in the physical distribution of the payload over a cluster of satellites flying in formation or constellation, can be obtained using either the same or a different payload in each satellite. Issues, possible solutions and applications (visible/infrared and synthetic aperture radar remote sensing) of both of these approaches are analysed in this study. In particular, the problems of deployment, configuration maintenance and reconfiguration are addressed with formation examples in different orbits. The results are critically discussed in the paper

    A Note on a Geometrical Method to Solve Spacecraft Formation Flying Control

    Spacecraft formation flying is becoming more important since the use of multiple satellites has been demonstrated to be cost-effective. In some applications, the spacecraft need to satisfy certain geometrical constraints; e. g. regarding formation pointing. In this paper an efficient method has been devised that minimises the variation of orbital elements to achieve the requested states. The positions that minimise displacement from a reference plane are computed, and the compatible velocities that reduce shape and plane variation for all S/C are evaluated. This allows to find optimal values for a TPBVP. The algorithm has been applied to close-range GEO formations

    Sample Canister Capture Mechanism for Mars Sample Return: Functional and environmental test of the elegant breadboard model

    The paper provides recent updates about the ESA study: Sample Canister Capture Mechanism Design and Breadboard developed under the Mars Robotic Exploration Preparation (MREP) program. The study is part of a set of feasibility studies aimed at identifying, analysing and developing technology concepts enabling the future international Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission. The MSR is a challenging mission with the purpose of sending a Lander to Mars, acquire samples from its surface/subsurface and bring them back to Earth for further, more in depth, analyses. In particular, the technology object of the Study is relevant to the Capture Mechanism that, mounted on the Orbiter, is in charge of capturing and securing the Sample Canister, or Orbiting Sample, accommodating the Martian soil samples, previously delivered in Martian orbit by the Mars Ascent Vehicle. An elegant breadboard of such a device was implemented and qualified under an ESA contract primed by OHB-CGS S.p.A. and supported by Politecnico di Milano, Department of Aerospace Science and Technology: in particular, functional tests were conducted at PoliMi-DAST and thermal and mechanical test campaigns occurred at Serms s.r.l. facility. The effectiveness of the breadboard design was demonstrated and the obtained results, together with the design challenges, issues and adopted solutions are critically presented in the paper. The breadboard was also tested on a parabolic flight to raise its Technology Readiness Level to 6; the microgravity experiment design, adopted solutions and results are presented as well in the paper

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. A vantagem dessa tecnologia é a produção de briquetes mais compactos, que além de servir para combustão direta, também são adequados para torrefação, carbonização e gaseificação. Investigou-se preliminarmente o mercado de briquetes no Brasil, através de um levantamento das empresas produtoras, que proporcionou dados sobre tecnologias empregadas, quantidades produzidas e preços de venda. Esse levantamento sugeriu a existência de um potencial de mercado para introdução de prensas de parafuso sem-fim. Estudou-se o desempenho de um protótipo de briquetadeira de parafuso sem-fim construído pela empresa Bioware Ltda, em parceria com a Universidade Estadual de Campinas. Avaliaram-se dados de produtividade e gasto de energia bem como as propriedades físico-químicas dos briquetes produzidos. Constatou-se o bom desempenho técnico do protótipo e a boa qualidade dos briquetes, de acordo com dados encontrados em literatura. Realizou-se um estudo de caso de uma planta de briquetagem que evidenciou a viabilidade econômica dessa tecnologiaAbstract: In this work a technical and economic study about briquetting of vegetable residues focused on screw briquetting technology ¿ still not introduced in Brazil ¿ was developed. The advantage of this technology is the production of more compact briquettes that, as well as for direct burning purpose, are suitable for torrefaction, carbonization and gasification. The Brazilian briquettes market was previously investigated by means of a survey on production factories. This survey provided information about present technologies, briquettes production quantities, and sale price. The investigation suggested the existence of a market potential for introducing screw briquetting machines. The performance of a prototype of screw briquetting machine built by Bioware Ltda in partnership with the State University of Campinas was examined. Data on productivity and energy requirements were investigated and chemical and physical properties of produced briquettes were analyzed. A good technical performance of the machine and a good quality of the briquettes were observed.
