The aim of this work is to study the representation of the national identity and some aspects of Indian culture in the novel The God of Small Things (1998) by Arundhati Roy through an analysis that focuses on the how the author deconstructs and criticizes the representation of Indian cultural identity still based on the caste system to which is attributed the stratification of Indian society. The discussion also takes into account in what the novel portrays the cultural changes that took place in Indian society as a result of its contact with Western culture, in particular through the English colonization of the subcontinent.

The aim of this work is to analyze the inter-racial and gender elements articulated through plurivocalic discourse, in the short story “Melanctha”, part of the book Three Lives (1909), by Gertrude Stein. The main objective is to identify these voices, as representations of blackness and whiteness in order to establish the parameters that determine these relationships and, in turn, how they influence the ethnic relations represented in the narrative. Regarding the theoretical background a dialogue has been articulated between Cultural Studies ─ more precisely authors such as Woodward (2004) ─ and feminist theorists, such as Davis (2016) and hooks (2019). For the analysis of the plurivocal quality of the narrative will be followed Bakhtin's (1988) theory of plurivocalism. Regarding the critical reception of Stein´s work, will be considered the works by Rowe (2003), Hathaway, Jarab and Melnick (2003), English (2004), Abreu (2008), Daniel (2008), Will (2008), Aguiar and Queiroz (2015) and Morrison (2020). Regarding the concept of negritude, the analysis will be guided by the studies of Silva, Lago, Ramos (1999) and Munanga (2009). We concluded that, through stereotypes and the narrator's emphatic influence in using the values of whiteness in a narrative mainly composed by black characters, “Melanctha” subverts racism and transforms it into a transvestite oppression mechanism of opinions issued by black characters, when it is the narrator's opinion that is being expressed. We also conclude that based on racialized relations, “Melanctha” perpetuates racial stereotypes, but, even more, exposes the racial and gender relations of the turn of the 19th century with a subtlety that borders on its erasure.

A House of Many Mansions: Goan Literature in Portuguese

Goan writing in Portuguese has had a long and chequered history and at present is all but unknown in the region that inspired it, and by the descendants of those who produced it. This collection, originally published as a special edition of the reputed literary magazine Muse India, gathers translations of short stories, poems and extracts of novels and sets them alongside critical articles that aim to open up this body of writing for a contemporary Anglophone reader in Goa and further afield. Though often (but not exclusively) produced from a position of social advantage, and predominantly by Catholics, this branch of Goan literature contains many viewpoints on the history, identity and society of a territory that, while colonised by Portugal for hundreds of years, has always negotiated its place in the world in a wider Indian context. In this house of writing there are indeed many mansions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
