Healing of mucosal lesions in early gastric cancer

    No full text
In order to establish the frequency of early gastric cancer, (EGC), over 7 years of endoscopic experience and to illustrate the modifications of the lesion in the re-checked cases 3,000 consecutive patients were retrospectively considered. Six EGC (histological diagnosis on the resected specimens) were detected (0.2% of the material and 7.8% of the observed gastric cancers). In 4 out of 5 cases studied by means of a second examiniation, a substantial change of the macroscopic appearance of the lesion occurred, with an apparent healing of ulceration or erosions. In 3 cases the diagnosis of malignancy was made only at follow-up examination. The following conclusions may be drawn: (1) ulceration or erosion in EGC may often heal; and (2) multiple biopsy of the repaired gastric mucosa is necessary due to the possibility of false-benign diagnosis at the first observation

STUDIO DELL'IMMUNITA UMORALE E DELLA FUNZIONE GASTRICA IN SOGGETTI CON VITILIGINE

    No full text
A clinical, biohumoral and immunological study of gastric function was carried out in 31 subjects with a view to evaluating the incidence of the association of pathological alterations, subjective disturbances and modifications in humoral disturbances and modifications in humoral immunity during the condition, which many workers consider to have immunitary pathogenesis. The results obtained suggest that in 50% of cases, vitiligo is associated with various pathological alterations and subjective disturbances. Disease associations and biohumoral and immunological alterations are more frequent in patients with hypergastrinaemia and/or circulating auto antibodies, but at the present time there are no certain factors supporting an immunological pathogenesis

Treatment of active chronic hepatitis with cyclophosphamide.

Twenty patients with active chronic hepatitis, classified on the basis of the treatment into three groups, have been studied: (1) patients treated with cyclophosphamide (10 patients); (2) patients treated with cyclophosphamide after cycles of corticosteroid therapy (four patients); (3) patients treated with corticosteroid (six patients). In all patients we observed clinical, biochemical and immunological changes during and after treatment. Hepatic needle-biopsy was performed in all patients before treatment. The histological picture was rechecked after the first cycle of therapy in twelve patients. The results obtained in the three groups of patients have been statistically compared. Cyclophosphamide treatment produces an improvement of general conditions and a persistent normalization of several biochemical and immunological data, especially in those patients in which active chronic hepatitis was not in an advanced stage (type A aggressive form). The histological picture showed no changes after treatment

Gastric epithelial dysplasia in relapsing and nonrelapsing gastric ulcer.

In 50 patients with benign gastric ulcer (eight relapsing, 42 nonrelapsing) the evolution of the edge and scar histological characteristics was studied with special regard to the pressure and modification of epithelial dysplasia. The patients were endoscopically followed-up; for 1 to 74 months. Dysplasia was present in 29% of observations made in active ulcer and in 19% of patients with scarring gastric ulcer. Severe dysplasia was found only in one case. During follow-up, regression of the dysplastic changes was documented in 64% of the cases, progression from mild to moderate dysplasia in 4%, while no change was recorded in 32%. Appearance of dysplasia or progression from mild to moderate was seen in 62% of the relapsing cases, as opposed to 14% of the nonrelapsing cases (p less than 0.005). Dysplastic changes, usually mild, are relatively frequent in the mucosa both at the edge and scar of gastric ulcer, but they tend to disappear with the healing of the ulcer. Appearance or progression in severity of dysplasia during follow-up are rare, but significantly more frequent in relapsing ulcers, which therefore require more careful follow-up

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
