Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Evaluation of temporal and spatial disorientation in elderly patients with cognitive impairment
A battery of tests probing orientation in time and space were administered (Folstein mini mental state examination: MMSE; Berg's orientation scale for geriatric patients: OSGP; Hasegawa dementia screening scale: DSS; Fishback Philadelphia geriatric center mental status questionnaire: PGCMSQ; Jacobs cognitive capacity screening examination; CCSE), with the aim at establishing their sensitivity for evaluating performance in orientation skills. In a group of patients with dementing disease and comorbid disorders of recent onset, reality orientation therapy (ROT) was administered 5 days per week for one month in daily one-hour treatment sessions; only the OSGP differed from the MMSE in terms of mean performance scores. This suggests that the OSGP might be particularly well suited for identifying the efficacy of ROT, at least in terms of recovery of orientation functions
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Combined Effects of Age and Comorbidities on Electrocardiographic Parameters in a Large Non-Selected Population
Background: Previous studies have evaluated average electrocardiographic (ECG) values in healthy subjects or specific subpopulations. However, none have evaluated ECG average values in not selected populations, so we examined ECG changes with respect to age and sex in a large primary population. Methods: From digitized ECG stored from 2008 to 2021 in the Modena province, 130,471 patients were enrolled. Heart rate, P, QRS and T wave axis, P, QRS and T wave duration, PR interval, QTc, and frontal QRS-T angle were evaluated. Results: All ECG parameters showed a dependence on age, but only some of them with a straight-line correlation: QRS axis (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.991, r = 0.996), PR interval (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.978, r = 0.989), QTc (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.935, r = 0.967), and, in over 51.5 years old, QRS-T angle (p < 0.001, R2 = 0.979, r = 0.956). Differences between females and males and in different clinical settings were observed. Conclusions: ECG changes with ageing are explainable by intrinsic modifications of the heart and thorax and with the appearance of cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities. Age-related reference values were computed and applicable in clinical practice. Significant deviations from mean values and from Z-scores should be investigated
Is it possible to reduce job burnout of the health care staff working with demented patients?
The Maslach burnout inventory (MBI) was administered to the health care staff of a nursing home before implementing a therapeutic program of occupational therapy and cognitive rehabilitation for demented patients and one year later, while the patients continued the rehabilitative and occupational therapy. All the indices of the MBI showed a significant improvement at the staffs evaluation, when was appraised 12 months after the beginning of the therapeutic program. These treatments seem to have positive effects on both the patients, improving their performances, and the nursing staff, as an aid to reduce the job burnout
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Concomitant evaluation of plasma galanin and catecholamine levels during a cold pressor test in healthy human male and female subjects.
The neuropeptide galanin (GAL) is localized in the peripheral and central
nervous systems as well as in the adrenal medulla where it coexists with
catecholamines. We evaluated the changes in GAL plasma levels as well as
systolic and diastolic blood pressures and in the plasma levels of epinephrine
and norepinephrine (NE) in normal human male and regularly menstruating female
subjects during the activation of the sympathoadrenal system by a cold pressor
test. The test was performed by immersing the hand of the subject in 1 degree C
cold water for 4 min. Blood samples were collected both under basal conditions
and at subsequent intervals during the cold stimulus as well as at the end of
the recovery phase. The values were compared with those obtained when the same
subjects were sham tested. As expected, systolic and diastolic blood pressures
increased in both sexes during the cold test; the systolic blood pressure
values were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in males. Epinephrine and NE levels
rose significantly above baseline in both male and female subjects after the
cold stimulus; the NE increments were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in males.
The basal GAL levels were found to be variable but not sexually dimorphic. In
both sexes, during cold stimulus and recovery phase, GAL values were found to
be not significantly different from those detected during the sham test. These
results demonstrate that the release of GAL in peripheral blood is not
associated with that of catecholamines in response to the cold pressor test
