In this study, the usage of wind and solar energy to produce electricity and the possibility of electrical energy production from wind and sun hybrid energy systems in the region of Eskisehir for application purposes has been studied. First, a wind and sun observation station was founded at the Anadolu University Iki Eylül Campus, and data were collected for 6 months to determine the wind energy potential. Values from the established measurements are searched to determine whether electricity production from the wind and solar energy is feasible. Also a hybrid (Wind-Solar) Energy Production System Model is constructed and economical analysis for the given period was made. It is aimed that by using this model the bigger systems analysis can be don
The Importance of Creative Industries in the Local Economy and The Contribution of Design to Creative Industries
Hocaoğlu, Dilek (Dogus Author)The idea of creative industries was emerged in Australia in the early 1990s but appeared to be discussed in detail in England in the late 90s. This idea has come on the agenda in order to create new jobs and ensure economic growth. Some politicians have realized that the economy which was based on the manufacturing was no longer effective in the new world order. They have tried to develop new models for local development and they have also discovered that the creative people and the creative industries those people creates are sources of this development. 'Design' and 'Architecture' - that assessed under the title of ` Creative Industries and Activities' by European Commission- are the areas that creativity and therefore creative people are focused. The statistics obtained from this research showed that the creative industries have a remarkable portion in the gross national income among the other sectors (food, beverage, tobacco manufacturing sector) and they are also growing fast. In this paper, the development of creative industries and their current situation in the world will be covered in the first place, and then the position of creative industries in the local economy will be evaluated
Classification of disc damage status by discovering knowledge from experimental data in marble cutting process
In marble industry, it is of vital importance to determine the damaged discs on time to prevent possible industrial injuries. Therefore, in this study, it is proposed to classify the status of the cutting discs that are used while cutting the natural stones. To classify the deflections of the discs, 673 different experiments are performed. Cutting discs corresponding to four different damage classes (undamaged disc, less damaged disc, much damaged disc, and broken disc) are employed in the tests. Eight different parameters (cutting forces (F-x, F-y, F-z), noise, peripheral speed of the disc, current, voltage, power consumption) are measured and recorded in the experiments. For each experiment, mean values of different measured data are studied. Artificial neural networks are employed as classifiers. In the first stage, all of these mean values corresponding to eight parameters are selected as the input vectors of the artificial neural networks, whereas in the second stage, the dimension of input vector is decreased by leaving out the parameters one by one. In this stage, it is aimed to determine the most important parameter that caries much more information about the cutting process.TUBITAK [TUBITAK-112M347]The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: The authors would like to thank TUBITAK for supporting this research through Grant TUBITAK-112M347
Potential Analysis of Wind Energy as a Power Generation Source
WOS: 000277508200002Wind energy as a power generation source is one of the most significant and rapidly developing renewable energy sources in the world. Because wind energy potential in various parts of Turkey is becoming economical, it is necessary to determine to start the immediate usage of the wind energy potential and the investigation of the necessary techniques and economic feasibility. In this study, wind energy status in Turkey is examined briefly and the possible wind energy potential in Eskisehir, Turkey is investigated using the data collected in the observation station established at Iki Eylul Campus of Anadolu University between the dates of July 1, 2005 and September 30, 2006.Anadolu University of Scientific Research Project Fund [2004/040258]The author gratefully acknowledges the Anadolu University of Scientific Research Project Fund for the financial support of this work through project 2004/040258
A method for detecting the profile of an author
This paper presents a method for detecting an author’s profile using the following two elements: gender and age. This is based on a set of dialogues, written in two languages: English and Spanish, provided for Author Profiling competence within the evaluation forum "Uncovering Plagiarism, Authorship, and Social Software Misuse" (PAN2018). Counts of lexical, semantic, and syntactic characteristics are used to generate a two-phase classification system, which first classifies gender and then age. The results obtained show that, with the amount of data available, it is possible to characterize both the age and gender of an author with an accuracy greater than 50%. However, these values could be improved by having more evidence of information in the training data.Silva, JesusGarcía, SilviaBinda, María AlejandraMarin Gonzalez, FredyBarrios, RosioLeon Castro, Bellani
Effects of the oxidative stress and genetic changes in varicose vein patients
Background Etiology of the varicose veins is still partly known. It has been proposed that varicose veins formation might be a cause of the oxidative stress and/or cause from genetical reasons. Method The levels of antioxidant defense system enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and an oxidative stress indicator, malondialdehyde, were measured in saphenous vein samples of varicose veins patients. Additionally, genetical polymorphism of glutathione S-transferase theta-1 has been studied. Result In this study, measurements revealed significant increase in catalase and malondialdehyde levels in the patient group, whereas superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzyme activity and comparison of the null mutation frequency in the glutathione S-transferase theta-1 gene did not show a statistically significant difference. Conclusion We propose that the increase in catalase and malondialdehyde activities in our patient group may be related to each other. Increase in catalase levels, an antioxidant enzyme might be a compensatory response to the increase in malondialdehyde levels, an oxidative molecule.Research Fund of Istanbul University [2897]The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: This work was supported by the Research Fund of Istanbul University, project no. 2897

21st Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU) --APR 24-26, 2013 -- CYPRUSÇolak, M. Alper (Arel Author), Bölükbaş, Deniz (Arel Author) --- WOS: 000325005300275As one of the renewable energy sources, wind energy has received great attention in Turkey as in the rest of the world in the last decade. Despite of this trend, there is an increasing number of assessment reports stating the impact of wind farms on the performance degradation of electromagnetic propagation systems. In this paper, wind turbines' effects on radar detection performance are investigated using radar data which we constructed using a real terrain scenario and two-dimensional propagation analysis employing different numerical electromagnetic techniques
Classification of authors for a recommendation process integrated to a scientific meta-search engine
The search for scientific production on the web has become a challenge, both in terms of volume, variety and updating speed. It requires tools that help the user to obtain relevant results when executing a query. Within these tools, this team has developed a specific meta-search engine for the area of computer science. In its evolution, it is intended to include recommendations from authors for each of its users’ queries. The generation of such recommendations requires a method capable of classifying the authors in order to define their inclusion and position in a list of suggestions for the end-user. This paper presents a method that fulfills this objective, after being evaluated and having obtained results that allow to propose its inclusion in later development of the recommendation system.Viloria, AmelecCrissien Borrero, Tito José-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-7459-7941-600Pineda, Omar-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-8239-3906-600Pertuz, LucianaOrellano, NatalyVargas Mercado, Carlos-will be generated-orcid-0000-0002-5436-0568-60
