    Atlas of Re.cycle. A learning tool for abandoned cultural Heritage

    This contribution aims to develop a concept expressed in a recent paper presented at the international scientific conferences “Heritage urbanism” in Zagabria and “ReUso2015” in Valencia. Due to the large amount of neglected and abandoned buildings in Europe, the definition of heritage needs a new paradigm. The recycle of existing artifacts includes a new range of values that updates the typological, chronological and geographic extension of the notion of historical heritage proposed by Françoise Choay. This update process defines a new theoretical and practical horizon that entails new categories of mapping and new approaches of evaluation and intervention. The techno-ontological infrastructure that best works for this proposal is the Atlas: an “OpenStreetMap” based on ODC Open Database License (ODdL) and developed in a shared mode with social context.     Compared to a two-dimensional photographic image, a digital three-dimensional model offers several advantages: it can describe the shape of a drawing and its media replicating its optical properties; it can efficiently document its state of conservation by highlighting the overlaps and changes occurred over time; and, finally, it can be displayed interactively from multiple points of view and under the correct lights showing even the finest details. In accordance with this working hypothesis, the drawings of Anatomia dei disegni [Reloaded] exhibition were reproduced three-dimensionally with the ambition of providing both visitors and scholars with a tool that recreates most of the features of the original drawings. The digital model thus narrates the drawing techniques and the complex contents that their author has transferred into them. Using the photometric stereo technique – a minimally invasive technology exploiting a limited number of photographic images captured with lights in the visible spectrum only – the models of the five drawings exposed were created with nLights, a software developed to generate the 3D shape and the bitmaps required to replicate the optical properties of the materials used by Leonardo da Vinci to trace his figures and texts

La relazione esistente tra lo sviluppo industriale di determinati comparti e la possibile crescita del turismo culturale in generale ne è l’evidenza maggiore e quella che può tracciare una strada che porti a nuovi e fecondi legami tra Italia e Argentina e le loro due culture

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Construction, Management and Visualization of 3D Models of Large Archeological and Architectural Sites for E-Heritage GIS Systems

    In this paper we present an integrated system developed in order to record, construct, pre-process, manage, visualize and visually navigate 3D models reality based of large archeological and architectural sites for eHeritage GIS systems. The framework integrates structured geometrical and documentary information resulting from multiple sources with the aim to enhance the knowledge of those sites within the frame of its historical evolution and its institutional management in a 3D GIS/DB. The developed applications were designed for different types of users, with a largely scalable interface, able to support different output devices and to work at different levels of iconicity. The system allows a full comprehension of the buildings in their own context, permitting to discover unknown relationships, to evaluate their architectural occupancy and to quickly access a complex system of information. The framework has been tested in two different systems - designed and developed to satisfy both internal (cataloguing, documentation, preservation, management of archaeological heritage) and external (communication through the web portal) purposes: the first, in Pompeii, developed in order to have a web-based system that uses Open Source software and complies with national and international standards; the second one, a prototype designed to make available on the Google Earth platform the complete Palladian corpus documentation implemented by the CISAAP

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
