Plant products as biocides for conservation of cultural asset sustainable for human and environmental health
In the last decades plants products are increasingly used also in defining innovative procedures for sustainable conservation of cultural heritage. Particularly, essential oils or hydro-alcoholic extracts have been fruitful applied to contrast microbial colonization on organic and inorganic artworks or insect infestation (Anobidae) having regard to the repellent action.
In this paper, extracts from Asteraceae and Lamiaceae plant families are utilized to counteract widespread microbial colonization (bacteria, cyanobacteria, fungi) due to their antimicrobial activity. In order to define the adequate concentration correlating it to microbial species detected, the antimicrobial activity of natural products is preliminary in vitro assayed by Agar Disc and Well Plate Diffusion methods. Moreover, an integrated approach based on morphological analysis (optical, scanning and confocal electron microscopy), in vitro cultures (Nutrient or Sabouraud agar) and molecular investigation (genomic microbial DNA extraction, sequencing and sequence analysis) are routinely performed for the identification of largest number of microbial taxa.
Besides, to enhance the antimicrobial activity different protocols have been performed, such as for Thymus vulgaris products directly applied on wooden sculpture surface as hydro-alcoholic extract, followed by exposure, in a dedicated chamber, to the volatile compound of the corresponding Essential Oil. In other case studies, the exposure to volatile compounds of Crithmum maritmum, Inula critmoides, Thymus vulgaris and Origanum vulgare essential oils was performed under controlled vacuum conditions, comparing the effects to environmental condition exposure. These studies confirm the possible use of plant extracts in replacing synthetic chemical biocides, in full respect of human health and environment sustainability

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Solunto archaeological park in Sicily: life under mosaic tesserae
Biodeterioration is a complex process induced by the growing and metabolic activity of a wide range of macro and microorganisms, becoming a revelling problem also for the mosaic tesserae of “Casa di Leda” in the Greco - Roman site of Solunto in Sicily.
In this case-study, a thick biofilm inducing a deep alteration of mortar and consequently the mosaic tesserae detachment has been highlighted during the restoration plan.
The biofilm microbial consortium has been investigated by an integrate approach based on Microscopy analysis (O.M., C.L.S.M.), in vitro culture (Nutrien and Saboraud media) and molecular biology investigation (DNA target sequence amplification, sequencing, sequence analysis).
A microbial diversity has been revealed belonging to bacteria (Bacillus) and fungi (Alternaria, Aspergillus), besides cyanobacteria (Chroococcus) and green algae (Chlorella).
In order to control the biofilm colonization two essential oils (EO), Thymus vulgaris and Origanum vulgare, have been utilized and their antimicrobial activity, preliminarily in vitro (agar disc diffusion methods) and after ex situ and in situ evaluated. A treatment of opacity suitable for media of low density and temperature. I
The paper is concerned with the determination of mean absorption coefficients for the most important physical processes, suitable for a wide range of physical conditions. In particular, they do not need any particularly restrictive assumption about the thermodynamical state of matter, and about the coupling between matter and radiation. All these reasons, and the choice of the Planck mean, make the authors' mean absorption coefficients especially useful in those particular low density and temperature conditions, that are typical of protogalaxies and protostars. Furthermore, the opacities are given in an explicit functional form which allows to avoid interpolation of large multi-parameter tables
A treatment of opacity and emission suitable for media of low density and temperature. II - Molecular hydrogen
The cooling and absorption functions due to rotovibrational transitions of the H2 molecule were evaluated. This is done by computing the NLTE level populations, taking into account collisions between molecules, collisions between molecules and H atoms, and the effect of a radiation field modeled with a blackbodylike field at a temperature T(rad). Sources considered as opacity were both bound-bound transitions in the rotovibrational levels of the molecule, and the radiation scattering on bound electrons. The absorption coefficient is averaged on the wavelength spectrum adopting the Planck function as a weight. In some cases, analytic fits to the computed values vs the state variables are presented and discussed. Both emission functions and opacities are also presented in tabular form
