Modelli dell’identità sessuale: tra natura e cultura

    No full text
The purpose of this Letter is to contribute to the debate on the construct of sexual identity, highlighting the existence of more than one model of sexual identity and, therefore, not only of different explanations on the formation of sexual identity itself but, more generally, the dynamics and the development of the wider dimensions of human sexuality. It will be presented and discussed two models of sexual identity: the first, which we call the biopsychosocial-identity, distinguishes between biological constructs of sexual identity and psychological constructs within the totality of a person; the second, namely the behavioural identity, defines sexual identity as the result of ontogenetic sexual behavior of the individual including the dimensions of gender identity, gender roles and orientation through which one builds his/her own sexual self-image

Cognitive Constraints Underlying Models of Disability: A New Paradigm in Disability Study

    No full text
Introduction and aim: Studies on the models of disability have been conducted almost exclusively within a sociological perspective. The authors have carried out studies aimed at verifying whether the disability models are attributable not only to contextual variables but also to universal and species-specific human cognitive constraints. The purpose is the implementation of three paradigms in order to investigate three experimental objectives: (i) the strength of the implicit association built on two disability models, the medical and the social; (ii) how much of a particular disability model believed by an individual is related to environment; (iii) the functioning of the cognitive mechanism related to the medical model. Method: Development of a logical design of a research paradigm on disability study. Results: Three experimental paradigms are analytically presented aiming at: (i) identifying which of the two models can be traced to implicit associations characterized by the greater predictive power with respect to beliefs on disability; (ii) checking the assumptions about the non-contextual features of disability models; (iii) investigating the mental architecture of cognitive processes underlying the models of disability. Conclusion: The authors wish the three paradigms to be subjected to experimental examination by the scientific community

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

When the body tells: The body and sex in disability and the Italian AMAABILI (love-able) project

    No full text
The international scientific literature is unanimous in finding that the theme of sexuality in disability is still latent and overwhelming both in residential centers of care and assistance and in the families of the disabled themselves. The sexuality of a disabled person is not amongst the explicit purposes of his or her education or rehabilitation. The lack of education and training on sexual health and the strong prejudices of the professional and familial caregivers are a barrier often insuperable. The AMAABILI (love-able) research-intervention project (fully founded by Umbria Region, Italy, 2010-2011) was born from these assumptions. The main objectives of the project were both to explore the spread of the prejudices about sexuality and disability among the disabled and their caregivers and to train and educate not only disabled people but especially the caregivers in achieving awareness about their sexuality as a prerequisite for the promotion of the sexuality of their disabled clients

The psychologists’ functions in the assistive technology assessment

As Meloni and colleagues (2011; 2012) claim, the non-coding of personal factors in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health could be considered as one of the most influential causes of the scarcity of scientific literature on the role of the psychologist in the field of rehabilitation in general and in the assistive technology (AT) assignment process in particular. In order to overcome this cultural barrier, the professional functions of the psychologist in a centre for technical aid are described by categorising the necessary skills into two psychological dimensions: expertise on personal factors and ability in the field of human relationships and communication. The psychologist practises these competencies by pursuing three main aims: i) to empower the user/client to achieve a greater awareness of his or her own resources and to reach the optimum level of satisfaction by choosing and adopting the appropriate AT solution; ii) to support family members or caregivers in providing effective support to disabled people; and iii) to help the multidisciplinary team’s centre improve professional relationships and mutual communication and, consequently, the effectiveness and efficiency of the centre itself. The tools which the psychologist uses are not only the administration and interpretation of the main instruments for clinical and behavioural assessment, but also the ability to listen, receive and understand within the professional psychological relationships in which the psychologist himself or herself is involved in a centre for technical aid

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The Digital Storytelling Methodology In Media Education For Learning Digital Citizenship Skills As Part Of A University Course

    No full text
This study investigates how a group of university students perceived their actual achievement of a series of media, digital and critical reflection skills together with critical reflection (information, media and digital literacy) developed during a Media Education Workshop conducted through the use of Digital Storytelling techniques. The study carried out at the University saw the participation of 176 students of the average age of 21 who live within an "Infosphere", i.e. an eco-system dominated by media frameworks and a continuous flow of information (a mediatization context). In this workshop, the students were organised into workgroups and they designed 76 videos that were published on the Network. Four thematic areas were addressed: digital life, the environment, volunteering, the association movement and active citizenship. At the end of the activities, the students were presented with a questionnaire that analysed their perception of the effectiveness of Digital Storytelling in the development of digital and media skills from various perspectives; in particular, critical thinking on concrete and experiential issues. The quantitative and correlational assessment was conducted on the basis of an initial hypothesis that the Digital Storytelling approach enables participants to learn both technical skills in the use of digital tools (video in particular) and also reflective practice and meta-cognition skills, thus stimulating awareness and recognition of the students' ethical, social and value-related dimensions as well as their contextual meaning

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
