    Metaphrasis in Byzantine Literature

    Throughout the centuries, Byzantium's ambitious authors were conscious of the significance of literary registers for the reception of their texts. They deliberately made use of stylistic elements or refrained from using certain features in order to reach their target audience. There are certain groups of texts dating from various periods where these stylistic elements can be tracked precisely by comparison of two or even more versions with their model texts. Such examples of rewriting can be found particularly within genres with a broader audience appeal, namely hagiography and historiography. It is in both genres that we encounter metaphrastic processes, in terms of stylistic elaboration and in terms of stylistic simplification. As well as stylistic reshaping, metaphrasis may also encompass the addition or removal of literary and/ or thematic aspects. All these processes signify intent as well as authorial interpretation. Frequently, the ideological orientation of a text is refurbished through rewriting. Teasing out these strands for exploration helps to supply a potential wealth of information on the author (if known), cultural (social, religious, historical) content, and creative ability, as well as levels of education and literacy

    Electoral competition in a multidimensional political arena - parallel moves instead of convergence in policy platforms

    This paper provides a theoretical model of electoral competition in a multidimensional political arena with a heterogenous electorate and politically active interest groups. The emerging pattern of movement in policy platforms is fundamentally different to the concept of convergence proposed by the spatial theory of voting. Rather than the centre of the scale of policy preference, its extreme ends, occupied by dominant-issue-voters and interest groups, attract the policy platforms. The platforms move in parallel instead of towards each other, while the difference in policy platforms is reduced only under certain conditions. --voters,interest groups,ideology,political parties,convergence

    A note on brain actuated spelling with the Berlin brain-computer interface

    Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) are systems capable of decoding neural activity in real time, thereby allowing a computer application to be directly controlled by the brain. Since the characteristics of such direct brain-tocomputer interaction are limited in several aspects, one major challenge in BCI research is intelligent front-end design. Here we present the mental text entry application ‘Hex-o-Spell’ which incorporates principles of Human-Computer Interaction research into BCI feedback design. The system utilises the high visual display bandwidth to help compensate for the extremely limited control bandwidth which operates with only two mental states, where the timing of the state changes encodes most of the information. The display is visually appealing, and control is robust. The effectiveness and robustness of the interface was demonstrated at the CeBIT 2006 (world’s largest IT fair) where two subjects operated the mental text entry system at a speed of up to 7.6 char/min

    Ion optics with electrostatic lenses

    Ion optics with electrostatic lenses is presented using the standard matrix formalism of magnetic ion optics. We introduce the paraxial ray equation which is appropriate to systems with rotational symmetry. The rst-order solutions of the paraxial ray equation are derived. The resulting transport matrices can be used to study systems with acceleration tube lenses, aperture lenses, einzel lenses and dc accelerators. The analogy with geometrical optics is discussed. Beam transport and phase ellipses are described using the so-called matrices. The equations of the longitudinal transport matrix are derived. Besides rotational symmetric elements, electrostatic quadrupoles and electrostatic de- ectors are also presented. The effect of space charge forces is discussed
