for the first time in 1987. From the very beginning, (as the priliminary
stages of the novel demonstrate), the author chose a Mediterranean island
for its setting. The protagonist is a man in his best years, however,
stranded in every respect.
This constellation fatally recalls other novels from the time after 1968,
such as, for instance, the biographical report „The Thirty-Year Peace“
(Der dreißigjährige Friede) by Peter O. Chotjewitz (1977), in which
another stranded man, in this case on Sardinia, finds an idyllic world
in contrast to the familiar system of norms in Germany.
In the final version of Zoderer’s novel, this simply-knit and conventional
dichotomy is, however, suspended. The setting and timeframe of the
plot remain unknown for a long time. Only gradually, it turns out that
the protagonist left his home and sojourns in Trieste. But his home, as
is visible at the beginning and at the end, is a region located further
north; it is a landscape dominated by ashes, larches, and apple trees instead
of cypresses and it is possible to see snowflakes there as late as in
May. – The accent of home is still present in the language of the novel

Clustering of particles driven by salinity gradients in turbulence
Experimental analysis of the diffusiophoretic effect in turbulence demonstrates that preferential concentration of particles driven by the combined action of turbulence and inhomogeneous distribution of salinity exists. Additionally, theoretical predictions on the particle behavior could be confirmed. We provide evidence that inhomogeneous salt distributions in turbulence produce particle clustering in fractal sets at scales below the Kolmogorov scale. This clustering mechanism may provide the key to understanding a multitude of processes such as formation of marine snow in the ocean and population dynamics of chemotactic bacteria
The article gives an account of the content of the three volumes that make up the well-known trilogy "Das Haus auf meinen Schultern" (1999) by Dieter Forte (1935-2019), to which was subsequently added the publication of a fourth volume entitled "Auf der anderen Seite der Welt "(2004) which continues the narration of the experiences of the Second World War; is set in a nursing home where the survivors of this epochal trauma relive past experiences between dream and wakefulness. The essay analyzes in detail the different narrative register of the three volumes of the trilogy, intertwining the analysis of the literary work with the personal testimonies of the author, who tells the stories of the Fontana family (of Italian origin) and Lukacz (of Polish origin) as a family saga from a semi-autobiographical perspective. We focus on the formal and poetic stylistic peculiarities of the work, which has an epic character, on Forte's role as interpreter of the "rubble" culture in the phase following the fall of the Berlin Wall and critically analyze, in the final part of the essay, the various reflections of the commentators of Forte's work
Real Exchange Rate Distortion in Southeast Europe
In this paper, first we investigate to which extent the real exchange rate is distorted in the 7 Southeast European countries (SEECs), and compare the findings with other countries in Europe. Second, we shed light into possible determinants and effects of the real exchange rate distortions. Finally, a policy change away from a possibly distorted real exchange rate in the SEECs is being simulated. The results indicate that especially the West Balkan countries have overvalued real exchange rates, while other transition countries' exchange rates are rather undervalued. Some of the main determinants of the real exchange rate distortion are related to the inflow of remittances and FDI, while it was found that nominal exchange rate depreciation and trade openness reduce the real exchange rate distortion. The simulation model shows that a devaluation can have large positive effects on domestic output, exports and trade with self.Real Exchange Rate, Partial Equilibrium Model, Simulation Model, International Trade, Southeast Europe
2D numerical modeling of intense bedload-transport processes at confluences of mountain rivers and steep tributaries
The presented work deals with the numerical modeling of intense bedload-transport processes at confluences of mountain rivers and steep tributaries. Steep tributaries are characterized by having high transport capacities which supply large amounts of sediments to the confluence zone, where due to the sudden change in slope and the local hydraulic conditions, intense deposition can occur. The objectives of this study are to understand the potential applications and limitations of 2D numerical simulations for modeling these processes. The calibration of the applied 2D numerical model (BASEMENT, Basic Simulation Environment, v2.8) is based on comparing high-density point clouds of the confluence morphology at the end of flume experimental runs with numerical results. The calibrated numerical model is then used to test different discharge ratios and to investigate depositional patterns and mechanisms. The results show that key morphological features such as the confluence fan, the bank-attached bar and the scour hole can be accurately reproduced, showing that 2D numerical simulations are a valuable tool for modeling the complex interactions between morphodynamics and hydraulics at river confluences. Additionally, it is shown that the confluence morphology of steep tributaries and mountain rivers is strongly influenced by the sediment concentration in the tributary channel and the discharge in the main channel
Health-related quality of life assessment and reported outcomes in leukaemia randomised controlled trials - a systematic review to evaluate the added value in supporting clinical decision making.
Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is increasingly reported as an important outcome in cancer clinical trials. However, very little evidence exists on the impact of such evaluation in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of leukaemia patients. A systematic search of the literature from 1980 to 2007 was undertaken and studies were identified and evaluated independently, according to a pre-defined coding scheme, by three reviewers. Both HRQOL outcomes and traditional clinical reported outcomes were systematically analysed to evaluate their consistency and their relevance for supporting clinical decision making. Nine RCTs were identified, involving 3838 patients overall. There were four RCTs involving acute myeloid leukaemia patients (AML), three with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and two with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Six studies were published after 2000 and provided fairly robust methodological quality. Imatinib greatly improved HRQOL compared to interferon based treatments in CML patients and fludarabine plus cyclophosphamide does not seem to have a deleterious impact on patient's HRQOL when compared to fludarabine alone or chlorambucil in CLL patients. This study revealed the paucity of HRQOL research in leukaemia patients. Nonetheless, HRQOL assessment is feasible in RCTs and has the great potential of providing valuable outcomes to further support clinical decision making

Spatial separation of circularly polarized laser beams in sodium vapor
We observed experimentally that a superposition of two co-propagating left and right hand circularly polarized laser beams is spatially unstable during propagation through a vapor of sodium atoms containing argon buffer gas. A small spatial asymmetry between the two input beams leads to their separation into two pure circularly polarized output beams. However a single linearly polarized input beam was found to be spatially stable. Our theoretical results from Maxwell-Bloch propagation calculations using both modal expansion and direct partial differential equation solution methods are in good agreement with the experiments. The splitting mechanism can be explained in simple terms as consisting of an absorption and dispersion dominated initial part and a diffraction dominated final part
