Towards a no-lose theorem for NMSSM Higgs discovery at the LHC

    No full text
We scan the parameter space of the NMSSM for the observability of a Higgs boson at the LHC with 300 fb-1 integrated luminosity per detector, taking the present LEP constraints into account. We focus on the regions of parameter space for which none of the usually considered LHC detection modes are viable due to the fact that the only light non-singlet (and, therefore, potentially visible) Higgs boson, h, decays mainly to two CP-odd light Higgs bosons, h → aa. We simulate the WW → h → aa detection mode. We find that this signal may be detectable at the LHC as a signal/background ~ 600/600 bump in the tail of a rapidly falling mass distribution. If further study gives us confidence that the shape of the background tail is predictable, then we can conclude that NMSSM Higgs detection at the LHC will be possible throughout all of parameter space by combining this signal with the usual detection modes previously simulated by ATLAS and CMS. We also show that this WW → h → aa signal will be highly visible at the LC due to its cleaner environment and high luminosity. We present a study of the production modes and decay channels of interest at the LC

NMSSM explanation for excesses in the search for neutralinos and charginos and a 95 GeV Higgs Boson

    No full text
The observed excesses in the search for neutralinos and charginos by ATLAS and CMS can be fitted simultaneously in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) assuming a light higgsino mass, of magnitude less than about 250 GeV, and a compressed higgsino dominated neutralino and chargino spectrum, with 5−10% mass splittings. However, light higgsinos as dark matter would have far too large direct detection cross sections. We consider the next-to-MSSM (NMSSM) with an additional singlino-like lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) a few GeV below the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). Sparticles prefer to decay first into the NLSP and remnants from the final decay into the LSP are too soft to contribute to the observed signals. Co-annihilation in the higgsino-sector can generate a relic density in the WMAP/Planck window. The singlino-like LSP has automatically a direct detection cross section below present and future sensitivities: a direct detection signal in the near future would exclude this scenario. The singlet-like Higgs scalar of the NMSSM can have a mass around 95 GeV and signal cross sections in the bb¯ channel at LEP and in the γγ channel at the LHC compatible with the respective observations

Ohio – EUA –, e do caso Ellwanger (habeas corpus 82.424/RS) – Brasil

Excess pore pressure redistribution beneath pipelines: FEA investigation and effects on axial pipe-soil interaction

    No full text
Thermal expansion of seabed pipelinesmay generate excess pore pressure in the surrounding soil. This paper discusses aspects of the excess pore pressure redistribution process and their effects on the effective stresses at pipe-soil interface, and the resulting soil resistance to pipeline axial movement. The discussion is supported by results of finite element analyses using coupled soil models, which allow pore pressure generation, redistribution and dissipation. A first model provides insight into the two-dimensionality of the redistribution process, illustrating why dissipation rates differ from one-dimensional consolidation processes.A second model is used to addresses the effect of (apparent) over-consolidation local to the pipe-soil interface. This provides a plausible explanation for the observation in model tests of positive excess pore pressure in initially dilatant soil at the pipe interface.</p

The supreme court and the "ellwanger case": the interference of extralegal factors for delimitation of judicial decision processes

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this work is to discuss how Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) decides. For this studying is taking a process called “Caso Ellwanger” (habeas corpus 82.424/RS). According to decision on that case antisemitism is crime of racism. As a hard case we have ellected for this “law as integrity”, developed by Ronald Dworkin. This kind of theory permits the judicial creation of the law and also a kind of sociological explanation of the same decision. The methodology is based on a brief analysis of the judge’s arguments to identifie the presence of emotional reasons. The relation between Dworkin and Giddens’ theory permitted to conclude that STF’s decision is resulting from emotional elements and preconceived reasons.   Keywords: DECISION – HARD CASE – DWORKIN

    Season's Greetings from Discourse Lab

The festive season is a time of storytelling, sharing experiences, and building connections - all elements at the heart of discourse linguistics :) This year, we have looked into fervent negotiations of expertise, examined moral judgements in the health domain, dissected controversial discourses and smirked as our colleagues confronted the limitations of talking to cat robots. Time to celebrate the power of words to create understanding! We thank all readers and members of the DL community f..
