Crystal structure and crystal chemistry of fluorannite and its relationships to annite

    No full text
We present the crystal chemical characterization of fluorannite from Katugin Ta-Nb deposit, Chitinskaya Oblast’, Kalar Range, Transbaikalia, Eastern-Siberian Region, Russia. This mica belongs to 1M polytype (space group C2/m) with layer parameters a = 5.3454(2) Å, b = 9.2607(4) Å, c = 10.2040(5) Å, ? = 100.169(3)°. Structure refinement, using anisotropic displacement parameters, converged at R = 0.0384. Fluorannite shows a smaller cell volume (V = 497.19 Å3) than annite (V = 505.71 Å3) because of its smaller lateral dimensions and its reduced c parameter. The flattening of the tetrahedral basal oxygen atoms plane decreases with F content, together with the A-O4 distance (i.e., the distance between interlayer A cation and the octahedral anionic position) because of the reduced repulsion between the interlayer cation and the anion sited in O4

The aim of this randomized, double-blind study was the comparison of nimesulide (100 mg p.o., Aulin (R), Roche) vs, diclofenac (50 mg p.o., Dicloreuma (R), Alpha-Wassermann) in the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea. Patients requiring drug treatment in the last 6 months and having regular menstrual cycles were enrolled. Three hundred and eight subjects were randomized in two groups to receive up to 3 tablets/day (according to need), for the first 3 days of the cycle for two menstrual cycles. Abdominal pain was the primary endpoint and it was evaluated before and 30, 60, 120 min after the first drug administration, each of the two cycles, through a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS). Secondary parameters were the associated symptoms (evaluated through a Likert scale 0-3) as well as the subjective global judgement. Side effects were also recorded. Statistical evaluations were done on 304 subjects (149 nimesulide and 155 diclofenac) who completed the study. Sociodemographic and clinical features of patients assigned to the two groups. were superimposable. Baseline pain was similar in the two cycles: 73.5 +/- 10.8 for nimesulide and 72.1 +/- 11.4 for diclofenac. Both drugs progressively and significantly decreased pain which was reduced by 82% (nimesulide) and 79% (diclofenac), at the second hour. However, nimesulide showed faster activity than diclofenac starting from 30 min, with a reduction of 35% vs. 27% (p < 0.01), at both the first and second cycle. Headache and lumbar pain were significantly and equally improved by both treatments. At the end of each cycle, a good efficacy assessment was indicated in 86% of the nimesulide cases and 81% of those with diclofenac. Tolerability was good with both drugs. However, 16 cases reported gastric side effects in the diclofenac group, whereas they were only seven in the nimesulide group

Crystal structure and chemical composition of Li, Fe, and Mn micas

The crystal chemistry of three Li-, Fe-, and Mn-rich trioctahedral micas has been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The samples are from Hirukawa mine, Japan, from Mokrusha mine, Russia and from Sawtooth Mountains, Boise County, Idaho, U.S.A.. Our crystals belong to the 1M polytype with layer symmetry C121(1) and show M1 and M3 sites much larger in size than M2. Mean electron-count (m.e.c.) values are more variable for the M1 and M3 sites than for M2. With the exception of the sample from Sawtooth Mountains, all tetrahedral mean bond lengths appear to be smaller for T1 than for T11 site. When compared to the Li- and Fe-rich series, crystals show similar crystal-chemical trends, thus suggesting that the layer structure is affected in a similar way by Fe and Mn cations

Single photon emission computed tomography procedure improves accuracy of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy in gastro-entero pancreatic tumours. Schillaci O, Corleto VD, Annibale B, Scopinaro F, Delle Fave G. SourceUniversity of L'Aquila, Rome, Italy. Abstract In patients with gastro-enteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours the localization of all the neoplastic lesions and an accurate staging of the diseases have important therapeutic implications. Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy with In-111 pentatreotide has proved to be useful in detecting gastro-enteropancreatic tumours; however, the role of abdominal single photon emission computed tomography has not yet been definitively established. In a series of 52 patients with gastro-enteropancreatic tumours (9 non-functioning islet cell carcinomas, 4 insulinomas, 3 somatostatinomas, 2 VIPomas, 1 glucagonoma and 33 carcinoids) we compared somatostatin receptor scintigraphy with the results of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging performed within one month. Four and 24-hour total body planar images and 4-hour abdominal single photon emission computed tomography were acquired after the i.v. injection of approximately 250 MBq of In-111 pentatreotide. Only abdominal localizations were considered: planar scans detected 16 extrahepatic lesions in 13 patients and 54 liver sites in 21 patients; single photon emission computed tomography visualized 31 extrahepatic lesions and 89 liver metastases in 27 and 28 patients, respectively; computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging detected 11 extrahepatic lesions in 10 patients and 73 liver sites in 21 patients. In-111 pentatreotide single photon emission computed tomography was the only imaging method able to localize tumoural lesions in 13 patients; all these localizations were then histologically verified. The scintigraphic positivity did not depend on the site or on the presence of hormonal hypersecretions. In conclusion, our results indicate that single photon emission computed tomography is more sensitive than planar images and computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging in detecting abdominal gastro-enteropancreatic tumours and their metastases; it is able to increase both the number of visualized lesions and that of patients with positive findings. Single photon emission computed tomography is particularly useful in patients in whom tumoural lesions have not been already localized; it should be the first imaging modality in patients with gastro-enteropancreatic tumours: its initial use will result in more information and proper management. The role which testicular hormones have on the decrease of sexual function in ageing men is still uncertain, but of primary interest. Previously, it has been known that the impairment of Leydig cell activity is a causal factor in the decreasing sexual function in ageing men. The present study is an evaluation of some chronobiological aspects, which directly or indirectly concern the 'Gonadostat' in ageing men, in order to determine of any change of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis occurs during the ageing process. The results from a group of 18 young men aged between 21 and 37 were compared with the results from a group of 28 older men between the ages of 67 and 98. The daily variations of testosterone (T) levels were determined in both groups of men as its circadian rhythm is well known in adult men. Moreover, the nocturnal secretory pattern of prolactin (PRL) was studied in 6 of the 28 elderly men. When comparing the usual increase of T levels in adult men, which occurs in the morning, there were no significant differences found in the older group of men between early morning and evening. The PRL levels showed no nocturnal increase in 4 of the 6 men. A hormonal impairment in the central nervous system may, in fact, be associated with the testicular deficiency leading to the decrease in sexual function of ageing men

Morphological, histochemical and immunocytochemical study of CO2 and Er:YAG laser effect on oral soft tissues

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphological, histochemical, and immunocytochemical changes of the oral mucosa after CO2 or Er:YAG laser irradiation. Background Data: There have been no comparative reports on CO2 and Er:YAG laser effects on human oral soft tissues. Materials and Methods: Tissue preservation was studied in 40 oral biopsies of young patients obtained by CO2 and Er:YAG laser surgery. Hematoxylin-eosin and Giemsa stains, PAS/diastase treatment, AE1 and AE2 cytokeratins, MiB1/Ki67, and bcl-2 immunoreactions were performed on the laser cut edges on formalin fixed, paraffin embedded biopsies. Results: CO2 laser biopsies show blisters, clefts and erosions of the epithelium. Intracellular edema and lengthened nuclei were also seen. The glycogen content results decreased in CO2 laser biopsies. Good expression for cytokeratins and cell-cycle proliferation markers were found in Er:YAG biopsies, on the contrary the apoptosis marker was better expressed in CO2 laser biopsies. Conclusion: The results suggest that Er:YAG laser may be routinely used in surgery, because of its minimal damage of the epithelial tissue, its low inflammatory reaction, its quicker healing process and its lower risk of scarring

Cross-project defect prediction models: L'Union fait la force

    No full text
Existing defect prediction models use product or process metrics and machine learning methods to identify defect-prone source code entities. Different classifiers (e.g., linear regression, logistic regression, or classification trees) have been investigated in the last decade. The results achieved so far are sometimes contrasting and do not show a clear winner. In this paper we present an empirical study aiming at statistically analyzing the equivalence of different defect predictors. We also propose a combined approach, coined as CODEP (COmbined DEfect Predictor), that employs the classification provided by different machine learning techniques to improve the detection of defect-prone entities. The study was conducted on 10 open source software systems and in the context of cross-project defect prediction, that represents one of the main challenges in the defect prediction field. The statistical analysis of the results indicates that the investigated classifiers are not equivalent and they can complement each other. This is also confirmed by the superior prediction accuracy achieved by CODEP when compared to stand-alone defect predictors
