Exploitation of genetic resources for improving maize grain quality
The introduction of hybrids into cultivation brought up a significant increase in maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield, and a better resistance to pathogens. On the other hand, the possibility to help maintaining a good health through a convenient diet have recently focused the interest in food plants on the nutritional quality issue. A recent survey of maize germplasm from several countries revealed the existence of a wide genetic variability for the main components of the grain (Berardo et al., 2009). In particular, Italian germplasm was found to be rich in some bioactive compounds, e.g. carotenoids. With the aim to find new sources of alleles to improve the nutritional quality of maize hybrids, a set of old inbreds were grown in the field during two years and selfed. The chemical composition of the grain was investigated by NIR spectroscopy in terms of protein, oil, starch and carotenoids. A preliminary test of resistance to Fusarium verticilliodes ear rot was also carried out testing the inbreds under kernel artificial field inoculation. The severity of Fusarium attack, evaluated using ratings based on the percentage of kernels with visible symptoms of infection, showed in most of the inbreds a medium – low susceptibility; fumonisin accumulation was also determined. The use of hyperspectral imaging for distinguishing between inoculated, non-inoculated, open and self pollinated maize kernels was evaluated. Hyperspectral imaging is a powerful technique that could be used for cereal grains characterization in order to produce localized information. Because of its high speed of analysis, it could be of great value when thousands of samples need to be analyzed for resistance to fungine pathogens in a maize breeding program. Moreover, non-destructive analysis of single kernels composition could help identifying outlying individuals both for breeding and for industrial seed sorting applications, selecting and propagating single seeds with desirable composition traits. The genetic diversity among these genotypes is currently being described by molecular markers
Effects of textual prompting and constant time delay on social communication skills of young adults with Prader Willi syndrome during online socialisation activities
Background Social communication skills are critical for full participation in social activities in primary life contexts for adolescents and young adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. Method Two young adults with Prader Willi syndrome participated in an online socialisation programme with elderly and adolescent conversational partners. We used a multiple baseline across conversational partners design for each participant to investigate the effects of textual prompts and constant time delay on the number of initiations and follow-up questions. We evaluated the social validity. Results Both participants improved their social communication skills during online socialisation with partners. Participants with Prader Willi syndrome enjoyed participating in this study. Elderly conversational partners reported a slight decrease in loneliness following online socialisation. Conclusion The use of textual prompts and constant time delay may be helpful to promote opportunities for interaction among segments of the population potentially at risk of social isolation during online socialisation

An insight into the toughness modulus enhancement of highperformance knotted microfibers through the correspondence analysis
Avariety of applications, spanning from structural or biomedical engineering to flexible electronics, require the development of materials able to withstand high load and, at the same time, accommodate high strain before failure. While strength and toughness are often self-excluding properties in manmade materials, they can be efficiently combined by nature, which provides source of inspiration for novel materials design. Herein this paper, we pursue a bio-inspired approach, based on the introduction of a mechanical sink, such as a running knot, to improve the toughness modulus of highperformance polymeric microfibres. These are then enriched with additional smart features, such as a viscoelastic coating, surface roughening or a combination of those, to amplify the beneficial effect of the knot introduction. The role played by all such features on the mechanical performances of the prepared fibre samples, namely load at failure and toughness modulus increase, is then evaluated through a statistical technique, known as correspondence analysis (CA). While this exploratory analysis is widely adopted in biology, ecology, neuroscience or genetics, applications in structural or mechanical engineering are still rare. Here, we show thatCAcan be a powerful tool for the design of materials provided with enhanced toughness without losing strength
