ARE SPECULAR IMAGES SIGNS?
No full textIn this paper I address the question whether specular images are signs, that is, whether mirror phenomena possess a semiosic status. The general semiotic theoretical framework I refer to is the one developed by Umberto Eco (1976; 1984; 1999). Although Eco himself invariantly answered the question I raise by the negative, I explore the issue independently of his conclusion.
In section 1, I show why it is not the case that all specular images are signs on all occasions. In section 2, I argue that specular images are signs only under specific conditions. In section 3, I cope with a couple of doubts that can be raised about the legitimacy of considering specular images as signs even under the specific conditions I have identified. Finally, in section 4, I deal with Eco’s main objection against considering specular images as signs, and I show that this objection can easily be dismissed with regards to the thesis I advance here. My conclusion is that some though not all specular images are definitely signs

La discussione critica del progetto diventa un'occasione per mettere di nuovo a fuoco i temi del rapporto tra residenza, città e ambiente naturale, dell'artificialità e della naturalità, della costruzione del territorio anche nella prospettiva inusuale della storia delle isole artificiali, un tema marginale ma significativo che si dipana fino ai giorni nostri. Ne risulta uno spazio urbano autoreferenziale, il cui disegno è meticolosamente preordinato per evitare gli incontri, i conflitti, le sorprese che sono uno degli ingredienti propri della vita urbana

No full textThree centuries after the death of the Benedictine abbot Benedetto Bacchini (1645-1721), the publication of the proceedings of an important conference dedicated to him has made it possible to reconsider his figure as a religious and intellectual of European rank. Among the aspects worthy of renewed attention, the significant role of the paratextual apparatus emerged, as a privileged area for expressing in deep the historical thought and vision proposed by Bacchini. The editorial paratexts of some of Bacchini’s works that were entrusted to the printing houses without the intervention of the author, edited by scholars who had great esteem and / or had been very close to him, also offer relevant ideas. Among those works, the reissue by Lodovico Antonio Muratori of his edition of the Liber pontificalis by Agnello Ravennate within the Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, a new published version of his De Sistris by a Dutch author, and the posthumous editorial project relating to his Lettere polemiche against the Calvinist Giacomo Picenino. The function of the paratext is briefly examined also regarding a literary case of a certain importance, namely the collection of writings by Elena Lucrezia Cornaro published shortly after the female writer’s death (1688) in Parma at the presses of Ippolito Rosati ; in the circumstance, under commission by her family the abbot, in addition to taking care of the selection and arrangement of Cornaro’s works, signed both the dedication letter and the preface
