Production of Austenitic Steel for the LHC Superconducting Dipole Magnets

    No full text
The austenitic-steel collars are an important component of the LHC dipole magnets, operating at cryogenic temperature under high mechanical stress. The required steel, known as YUS 130S, has been specifically developed for this application by Nippon Steel Corporation (NSC), who was awarded a CERN contract in 1999 for the supply of 11 500 tonnes. In 2005 - after six years of work - the contract is being successfully completed, with final production being ensured since October 2003 by Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Steel Corporation (NSSC). The paper describes the steel properties, its manufacturing and quality control process, organization of production, logistics and contract follow-up. Extensive statistics have been collected relating to mechanical, physical and technological parameters. Specific attention is dedicated to measurements of magnetic permeability performed at cryogenic temperatures by CERN, the equipment used and statistical results. Reference is also made to the resulting precision of the fineblanked collars

FROM THE INTEGRATED SURVEY OF HISTORIC SETTLEMENTS TO THE PATTERN BOOK WITHIN THE BIM

    No full text
The object of the study is the survey of minor historic settlements through integrated architectural survey techniques, the BIM modelling for the management of information at multiple levels, and the definition of pattern books to describe the qualities of the place. The research on cultural heritage representation made in Umbria, taking as a case study the historic hamlet of Lizori, a settlement located over the hill between Foligno and Spoleto in the town of Campello sul Clitunno (PG). It was selected as a paradigm of minor village and an experimental model to provide useful reference to reconstruct strategies, which is so important in the area recently affected by seismic events. The purpose of the research is therefore focused on finding a modus operandi in the management of multiple and uneven information. The goal is then to create a digital informative model functional to the conservation and restoration process and a knowledge-based reference for further study

Solvent and temperature effects on the chromic behaviour of poly[3-(10-hydroxydecyl)-2,5-thienylene]

    No full text
The chromic behaviour of a soluble ω-hydroxydecyl 3-substituted polythiophene has been investigated by UV-VIS spectroscopy in different solvent/non-solvent mixtures over a wide range of low temperatures. Some interesting new effects have been observed that is the first case of a reversal of the solvatochromic transformation in substituted polythiopenes and a concentration effect in dilute pure solvent solutions. A molecular approach based on solvent-polymer interactions has been adopted to study the conformational chromic transformation of the polymer. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V

Analysis of UV - Vis spectral profiles of solvatochromic poly[3-(10-hydroxydecyl)-2,5-thienylene]

The paper discusses a systematic study of the UV - Vis spectral profiles of poly[3-(10-hydroxydecyl)-2,5-thienylene] during its solvatochromic transformation in different solvent/non-solvent mixtures. A simulation of the overlapped spectra of the two chromophores (A less and B more conjugated) of the polymer is made through the resolution of their pure forms by means of vibronic progressions of log_normal curves. The increment of the absolute intensity observed in the transformation has been determined and related to the increment of the transition moment; its value strongly supports the hypothesis that the solvatochromic transition consists in a doubling of A chromophores. Estimation of the average length of B chromophores has made it possible to evaluate the oscillator strength in the different solvent mixtures, the Franck-Condon factor and the Huang-Rhys parameter in relation to the intensity distribution of the vibronic structure. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Data-compression Applied To Dynamic Electrocardiography

    No full text
We have tested some techniques of ECG compression on the BIH/MIT Arrhythmias database. We have applied the following methods: (1) method of differences; (2) compression by prediction; (3) sample skipping methods; with the following kinds of errors: amplitude error, amplitude and delay error, area error. In the first and second method the average code length found after application of the Huffmann encoding has been found to be about 4 bits sample-1. For the third method the final compression ratio varies according to the allowed error; with a limited error threshold, however, we have reached an average compression a little lower than 1:5

Chromic Effects in Poly (3-(10-hexanoyloxydecyl)-2,5-thienylene) as Precursor of ω-Hydroxydecyl-functionalized Polythiophene

    No full text
The preparation of a hexanoyloxydecyl 3-substituted polythiophene and its conversion to the corresponding hydroxydecyl polymer, soluble in common organic solvents, is described. Solvatochromic and thermochromic effects of the two polymers were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy in pure solvent and in solvent/nonsolvent solutions. A very different response was found depending on the type of functional group. The carboxylate polymer requires the synergy of both nonsolvent and low temperature for a strong chromic effect comparable to that of the hydroxy polymer to be observed. A possible explanation of this behavior is discussed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
