Programming Heterogeneous Systems with Array Types
This paper describes the use of array notation called Parray in refinement of parallel programs concerning array type that separates the physical data layout and logical structure of multi-dimensional data, and the control flow diversion of heterogeneous processor units. A case study on matrix multiplication demonstrates refinement of Parray programs: the code evolves from a simple single CPU-thread code to a multi-thread code on CPU/MIC and then a GPU code by modifying the array types in only a few lines of code. A GPU-based SGEMM is implemented in Parray and achieves almost the same Gflops of CUBLAS 4.0 when testing on a single node of Tian-1A system. Because the code operates directly on the logical structure of array, the same SGEMM code can work on different physical array data layouts.EICPCI-S(ISTP)1067-107

Functionalization Carbon Nanotubes Innovate on Medical Technology
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are new nanomaterials with many biomedical applications. CNTs can be utilized to deliver a variety of therapeutic compounds to disease locations, including biomolecules. Because of their exceptional optical and electrical properties they are also attractive candidates for biomedical applications. CNTs can be functionalized with various functional groups to transfer several moieties for simultaneous targeting, imaging, and therapy. The potential ability to penetrate biological membranes and the minimal toxicity is most promising. This chapter deals with the functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) in all medical fields
Cna profiling of single ctcs in locally advanced esophageal cancer patients during therapy highlights unexplored molecular pathways
Background: Here, we monitored the evolution of CTCs spread in 11 patients affected by locally advanced EC who were undergoing therapy. Methods: In this perspective study, we designed multiple blood biopsies from individual patients: before and after neoadjuvant chemoradio therapy and after surgery. We developed a multi-target array, named Grab-all assay, to estimate CTCs for their epithelial (EpCAM/E-Cadherin/Cytokeratins) and mesenchymal/stem (N-Cadherin/CD44v6/ABCG2) phenotypes. Identified CTCs were isolated as single cells by DE-PArray, subjected to whole genome amplification, and copy number aberration (CNA) profiles were determined. Through bioinformatic analysis, we assessed the genomic imbalance of single CTCs, investigated specific focal copy number changes previously reported in EC and aberrant pathways using enrichment analysis. Results: Longitudinal monitoring allowed the identification of CTCs in at least one time-point per patient. Through single cell CNA analysis, we revealed that CTCs showed significantly dynamic genomic imbalance during treatment. Individual CTCs from relapsed patients displayed a higher degree of genomic imbalance relative to disease-free patients’ groups. Genomic aberrations previously reported in EC occurred mostly in post-neoadjuvant therapy CTCs. In-depth analysis showed that networks enrichment in all time-point CTCs were inherent to innate immune system. Transcription/gene regulation, post-transcriptional and epigenetic modifications were uniquely affected in CTCs of relapsed patients. Conclusions: Our data add clues to the comprehension of the role of CTCs in EC aggressiveness: chromosomal aberrations on genes related to innate immune system behave as relevant to the onset of CTC-status, whilst pathways of transcription/gene regulation, post-transcriptional and epigenetic modifications seem linked to patients’ outcome

PRISON LITERATURE IN PERSPECTIVE: A STUDY OF THE CONSOLATION OF PHILOSOPHY AS A PRISON NARRATIVE
Among all the works of literature produced in different prisons of the world across the human history, The Consolation of Philosophy (ca.524) holds a prominent position. Boethius was not the first person in human history to have been incarcerated for his beliefs and work, The Consolation of Philosophy, belongs to an extremely rich tradition of writing, now called Prison Literature. Boethius was a learned man who had profound knowledge of Christian traditions and was also well-versed in Classic literature; however, he found himself in the dark chambers of prison awaiting the king’s order for his execution regardless of the status and position he had before. While he was in the prison, he did not lose his nerves. Lady Philosophy visited him as a source of hope as he went on meditating and reflecting on life and its different shades. Prison actually became the place where he could think about some of the most important questions that human beings have ever asked about the nature of good and evil, providence and free will and time and eternity; thus, the prison becomes a place where Boethius is physically in chains but he enjoys the liberty and freedom through his unquenchable imagination. The present paper is an attempt to read The Consolation of Philosophy as a piece of prison literature. An attempt shall be made to look into the mind of the author for understanding the depths that his work attains in an otherwise highly restraining and controlling atmosphere
