    This resolution from the Everett Prisoners Defense Committee “emphatically condemn[s] the unwarranted, illegal and unconstitutional acts of ‘public servants’ in suppressing freedom of speech in Everett and interfering with the personal liberty of citizens without the due process of law” following the Everett Massacre on November 6, 1918. Furthermore, they “demand the immediate release of [the IWW men] in jail”.The incident known as the Everett Massacre occurred when a boatload of International Workers of the World (IWW) members attempted to land on an Everett dock on November 5, 1916. The IWW members had returned after IWW organizers had been run out of town and beaten by business owner vigilantes due to their support of an Everett shingle weavers' strike. The IWWs had returned to mount a "Free Speech Fight" a tactic in which the IWW would flood into a town to exercise their free speech rights, get arrested, and overwhelm the local jails and courts. After a bloody confrontation between IWW members and “deputized” citizen vigilantes, 5 IWW members were dead and 27 were wounded. Two citizen deputies were killed with 16-20 wounded, including the Snohomish County sheriff. Seventy-four IWW members were arrested upon their return to Seattle and put in the Snohomish County jail. Eventually all of the prisoners were released except for one IWW leader: Thomas Tracy. Tracy stood trial for the murder of the deputies—a crime for which he was ultimately acquitted

    The Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics - better known as the Many-Worlds Theory - has had a rather uneven reception. Mainstream philosophers have scarcely heard of it, save as science fiction. In philosophy of physics it is well known but has historically been fairly widely rejected. Among physicists (at least, among those concerned with the interpretation of quantum mechanics in the first place), it is taken very seriously indeed, arguably tied for first place in popularity with more traditional operationalist views of quantum mechanics. In this article, I provide a fairly short (15,000 words) and self-contained introduction to the Everett interpretation as it is currently understood. I use little technical machinery, although I do assume the reader has encountered the measurement problem already (at about the level of the well-known discussions by Penrose or Albert)

    Probability in the Everett World: Comments on Wallace and Greaves

    It is often objected that the Everett interpretation of QM cannot make sense of quantum probabilities, in one or both of two ways: either it can’t make sense of probability at all, or it can’t explain why probability should be governed by the Born rule. David Deutsch has attempted to meet these objections. He argues not only that rational decision under uncertainty makes sense in the Everett interpretation, but also that under reasonable assumptions, the credences of a rational agent in an Everett world should be constrained by the Born rule. David Wallace has developed and defended Deutsch’s proposal, and greatly clarified its conceptual basis. In particular, he has stressed its reliance on the distinguishing symmetry of the Everett view, viz., that all possible outcomes of a quantum measurement are treated as equally real. The argument thus tries to make a virtue of what has usually been seen as the main obstacle to making sense of probability in the Everett world. In this note I outline some objections to the Deutsch-Wallace argument, and to related proposals by Hilary Greaves about the epistemology of Everettian QM. (In the latter case, my arguments include an appeal to an Everettian analogue of the Sleeping Beauty problem.) The common thread to these objections is that the symmetry in question remains a very significant obstacle to making sense of probability in the Everett interpretation

    In 1977, John Wheeler and DeWitt invited Hugh Everett to give a talk on his theory at the University of Texas in Austin. A few weeks after the Austin talk, Charles and Suzanne Misner spent an evening at the Everett's house celebrating the Misner's 18th wedding anniversary. Suzanne encouraged the men to make a tape recording about how Everett's theory came about during their Princeton years. It is the only known recording of Everett. This transcript was produced from the original dictaphone tapes by Nancy Everett, with comments and corrections from Charles Misner and John Wheeler. The transcription, however, still contains numerous errors. Research in this area has been fast-paced over the last few years, following a controversial suggestion by David Deutsch that decision theory can solve the problem. This article provides a non-technical introduction to the decision-theoretic program, and a sketch of the current state of the debate

    A Prolegomenon to the Ontology of the Everett Interpretation

    In this article, I briefly explain the quantum measurement problem and the Everett (Many-Worlds) interpretation, in a way that is faithful to modern physics and yet accessible to readers without any physics training. I then consider the metaphysical lessons for ontology from quantum mechanics under the Everett interpretation. My conclusions are largely negative: I argue that very little can be said in full generality about the ontology of quantum mechanics, because quantum mechanics, like abstract classical mechanics, is a framework within which we can consider different physical theories which have very little in common at the level of ontology. Along the way I discuss, and criticise, several positive ontological proposals that have been made in the context of the Everett interpretation: ontologies based on the so-called "eigenstate-eigenvalue link", ontologies based on taking the "many-worlds" language seriously at the fundamental level, and ontologies that treat the wavefunction as a complex field on a high-dimensional space
