ERK-mediated regulation of leukotriene biosynthesis by androgens: a molecular basis for gender differences in inflammation and asthma.
5-Lipoxygenase initiates the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, lipid mediators involved in normal host defense and in inflammatory
and allergic disorders. Despite an obvious gender bias in leukotriene-related diseases (e.g., asthma), gender aspects have been neglected in studies on leukotrienes and 5-alpha-lipoxygenase. Here, we show that leukotriene formation in stimulated whole blood or neutrophils from males is substantially lower compared with females, accompanied by changed 5-lipoxygenase trafficking. This is due to gender-specific differential activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs). The differences are directly related to variant male/female testosterone plus 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone levels, and addition of 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone to female blood or neutrophils reduced the high (female) LT biosynthesis capacity to low (male) levels. In conclusion, regulation of ERKs and leukotriene formation by androgens constitutes a molecular basis for gender differences in the inflammatory response, and in inflammatory diseases such as asthma
Fertility preservation methods in young women with systemic lupus erythematosus prior to cytotoxic therapy: experiences from the FertiPROTEKT network
Despite new treatment options, some patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) need to be treated with the cytotoxic agent cyclophosphamide (CYC). Unlike malignant disease, there are no recommendations for ovarian protection in SLE. The clinical experience of the FertiPROTEKT network as well as recommendations after literature review will be presented in this paper
Abstract : One of the major difficulties involved with the production of self-leveling mortar flooring is related with the feathering of edges (curling), caused by shrinkage. The use of mineral additions is a theme that has been explored in the area of construction materials in order to improve the properties of self-leveling mortars. For this mean, an analysis over the influence of fine additions CZP and RCD on the properties of self-leveling mortars, mainly related to the durability was realized. Part of the Portland cement was replaced by fines (FC, RCD and CZP) in amounts of 10, 15 and 20%. Measurements were realized according to the required properties of self-leveling mortar in the fresh state. Then, the mechanical strength, capillary water absorption, tensile adhesion strength and finally range (linear shrinkage) and stability (curling) dimension tests were performed. The results revealed that the addition of fine CZP in the mixtures was effective to reduce drying shrinkage of self-leveling mortars. The ternary mixture (CP, FC and CZP) demonstrated the lowest values to warping of corners (curling). The quaternary mixtures of binders (CP, CF, RCD and CZP) showed more efficient results compared with the reference (CP e FC). Therefore, one can conclude that the materials tested at the present study exhibit a promising potential for future research and for building constructions
Fertility Conservation in Breast Cancer Patients
Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women. Increasing survival rates after breast cancer, new reproductive techniques and growing interest regarding the quality of life after cancer have brought the possibilities of fertility-preserving treatment to the center of attention of oncologists and affected patients. Many of these women suffer from infertility and premature menopause as a result of chemotherapy. Several measures, for example gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs, hormonal stimulation to cryopreserve oocytes, ovarian tissue cryoconservation or a combination of the methods, can be undertaken depending on the hormone receptor status of the tumor, and the patient's age and partner status. Embryo cryopreservation is currently the most promising fertility preservation option. Early counseling on fertility-preserving strategies is of utmost importance, so that the fertility-preserving method can be integrated into the oncologic therapy regime. </jats:p
