    The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is an intergovernmental organization comprised of 14 member countries. Its headquarters are in Germany, but they have three observatories in Chile as well. Their website is loaded with information and visitors shouldn't miss going on the "Virtual Tours", on the far right side of the homepage. The tours are of the three observatories in Chile, and offer almost 360 degree views of beautiful, yet sparse landscapes. The tour of La Silla has two particularly beautiful views, "La Silla Moonlight" and "La Silla Sunset". Visitors interested in seeing a panning of an artist's 3D rendering of the Orion Nebula must go to the "Video" link on the left hand menu on the homepage. There are over 1400 videos to choose from, so for those not into the Orion Nebula, never fear, there are plenty of other video choices. Finally, visitors must go to the "Top 100 Images" link on the right side of the homepage to see amazing and gorgeous images taken from the ESO's various observatories

    Hunting Exoplanets with Single-Mode Optical Interferometry

    The GRAVITY instrument was primarily conceived for imaging and astrometry of the Galactic centre. However, its sensitivity and astrometric capabilities have also enabled interferometry to reach a new domain of astrophysics: exoplanetology. In March 2019, the GRAVITY collaboration published the first spectrum and astrometry of an exoplanet obtained by optical interferometry. In this article, we show how this observation is paving the way to even more exciting discoveries — finding new planets, and characterising their atmospheres

    We present the first results of the Accretion Discs in Hα with OmegaCAM (ADHOC) survey, which aims to perform a deep and homogeneous photometric study of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in a number of nearby star-forming regions. We took advantage of the exquisite image quality and wide-field capabilities of OmegaCAM at the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) to perform multi-band (ugri and Hα), deep (iSDSS < 22 mag), homogeneous and wide-field (covering tens of parsecs) observations of eight star-forming regions: the Orion Nebula Cluster, Lupus, Sco-Cen, Haffner 18, Vela OB2, Eta Cha, Chamaeleon and Ophiuchus. Using a robust method to identify PMS stars through their photometric excess in the Hα band, we aim to measure physical parameters (including mass accretion rates) for over 10 000 PMS stars. Direct comparison with low-resolution spectroscopy confirms that the objects with Hα excess emission that are detected photometrically are bona-fide PMS stars. The first results from this study clearly demonstrate the validity of the observational approach to unveiling complex stellar populations in young clusters.Fil: Beccari, Giacomo.
