No full textInternational audienceAlain Grandjean is an economist and author specializing on green finance. He is also cofounder and partner of Carbone 4, a consultancy firm focusing on energy transition and adaptation to climate change. The interview first revolves around the academic content Alain Grandjean considers as the bare necessities to be taught in higher education, no matter the curriculum. This should take the form of a basic synthetic training which takes into account the major environmental issues without too much technicality as well as lessons in accounting and economics, which he considers essential. The interview also looks more specifically at engineering and business schools. Then Alain Grandjean shares his views on the effectiveness of different ways to engage for the transition -like radical individual lifestyle transformations and civil disobiedience. He also evokes the roles that trade unions as well as NGOS can play and he talks about collapsology
EUGENE: a STEP-based framework to build Application Generators
No full textInternational audienceApplications generators translate specifications into products. We defined a method inspired of the STEP standardization process, and its implementation with EUGENE. The goal is to build a meta-model close to the target product, formally derived from others meta-models. Template are then applied to this meta-model. As benefits of this method, the final meta-model offers a higher abstraction of the generation process, and the complexity of code templates is greatly reduced
Did Plant Patents Create the American Rose?
No full textThe Plant Patent Act of 1930 was the first step towards creating property rights for biological innovation: it introduced patent rights for asexually-propagated plants. This paper uses data on plant patents and registrations of new varieties to examine whether the Act encouraged innovation. Nearly half of all plant patents between 1931 and 1970 were for roses. Large commercial nurseries, which began to build mass hybridization programs in the 1940s, accounted for most of these patents, suggesting that the new intellectual property rights may have helped to encourage the development of a commercial rose breeding industry. Data on registrations of newly-created roses, however, yield no evidence of an increase in innovation: less than 20 percent of new roses were patented, European breeders continued to create most new roses, and there was no increase in the number of new varieties per year after 1931.
