Renewable energy consumption and per capita income: An empirical analysis in Finland

    No full text
Over the past decade, population growth and industrialization have been the driving force behind the increase in greenhouse gas emissions. The implementation of modern technologies capable of producing energy from renewable sources is insufficient to meet the demand for energy, which is experiencing a strong growth trend. In the last decade, it has been possible to observe a decrease in the use of oil and a significant increase in renewables, the inconsistency and unmanageability of which make it impossible to balance supply and demand. However, these have a positive impact not only on the environment, but also on the development in the economic field and employment. This study aims to examine the current relationship between economic growth and renewable energy consumption, for the period 1990–2019, on the territory of Finland, through a Granger causality test. The variables used for this work are renewable energy consumption, GDP, trade, and gross capital formation. The results are significant and lead to important policy implications; in fact, the analysis shows a feedback effect between renewable energy consumption and economic growth, and, through the Granger causality test, it is shown how renewable energy consumption can affect the rate of future growth

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Regularity results for a free interface problem with Holder coefficients

We study a class of variational problems involving both bulk and interface energies. The bulk energy is of Dirichlet type albeit of very general form allowing the dependence from the unknown variable u and the position x. We employ the regularity theory of A-minimizers to study the regularity of the free interface. The hallmark of the paper is the mild regularity assumption concerning the dependence of the coefficients with respect to x and u that is of Holder type

Sex Differences in Intelligence on the WISC: A Meta-Analysis on Children with Specific Learning Disabilities

Several studies have examined performance on the Wechsler batteries in typically developing children and adolescents. In particular, some studies suggest that cognitive functioning may differ between males and females. In this framework, the present study aims to investigate, through a meta-analytical approach, whether there are sex differences in the profiles emerging from the WISC battery in children with a Specific Learning Disability. For this purpose, a systematic search was conducted, resulting in a final selection of 12 published studies which utilized the WISC and included at least one group of SLD children of similar ages. Scores obtained in each scale and subtest of the battery were then examined according to the CHC/WISC-V classification. A series of mixed-effects models were fitted to meta-analyze the data. The results highlight some differences favoring males, and others advantaging females. On the one hand, males exhibited higher performances in crystallized intelligence, visual processing, and quantitative knowledge. On the other hand, females showed better performance in short-term memory and processing speed. Nevertheless, no differences in fluid reasoning emerged, which probably did not prompt differences in overall intellectual functioning. From a practical and implications point of view, understanding sex-specific differences seems to be of pivotal importance, since it might trigger the development of ad hoc intervention programs in the clinical and educational context

The invasion of Ukraine will change the economic and political scenarios. Together with the sanctions, it will accelerate the ‘de-globalization’ process already triggered by the 2008 financial crisis and the pandemic. In this paper, we analyze the effects that economic sanctions will have, in particular, on the international monetary system. In recent years, the dominance of the dollar as the default international currency has weakened albeit slowly. However, in the new scenario, alternative systems to SWIFT (particularly the Chinese one) will receive a strong boost as will the use of payments in currencies other than the dollar. As has already happened in other historical periods, the change in the dominant international currency is linked to epochal events and to a change in the technological paradigm: the war and the development of a digital currency in China and then in other countries could form the basis of this turning point

Overview of policy and market dynamics for the deployment of renewable energy sources in Italy: Current status and future prospects

In recent years, the international community has been strongly committed to promoting energy transition due to the various challenges presented by the global energy market. In this context, renewable sources have increasingly assumed a significant role, representing a viable solution to accelerate decarbonization and promote diversification of energy mix. This paper examines Italian energy profile, its status, and future prospects. Policies and incentives on a European and national scale have been analysed to observe the commitment of institutions in promoting energy transition. Policies and incentives on a European and national scale have been analysed to observe the commitment of institutions in promoting energy transition. Projections on future investments (2030) and economic and employment implications have also been provided. The analysis shows that shared investments are essential to achieve climate goals in the short term and that existing plants need to be converted through the use of new, more effective, cost-efficient technologies. Thus, innovation and investments in research and development are key drivers of energy transition, and with proper management, climate change mitigation can be ensured. The analysis provides some useful implications for policymakers who should ensure tax incentives, feed-in tariffs, and clear regulation at the national and regional levels that do not hinder the deployment of renewable energy infrastructure
