Tanberk, Senem (Dogus Author) -- Tükel, Dilek (Dogus Author) -- Conference full title: 17th International Conference on Smart Technologies; Ohrid; Macedonia; 6 July 2017 through 8 July 2017.In this project, we developed a chess play system based on Kinect vision sensor, which recognizes different hand gestures as a command and sends these commands to V-REP robotic simulation tool. Delta type robot will play chess according to the commands sent via vision software. In our system, we have tested for 2 different chess opening scenarios and DOF checking mode scenario, then we obtained results. Hence we propose an integration between Kinect hand gestures and V-REP simulation

The Principle of Laicism and Counter State-building in Turkey: Reflections on History and on the Conjuncture of Contemporary Politics

    No full text
The principle of laicism has been one of the main pillars of the state-building process of Turkey. Laicism in Turkish context was held through incorporation of religious institutions into the state apparatus. Starting with the 1990s parties with Islamist background have gained political power and found their way into government. With some reflections on the historical evaluation of Turkish politics, this article accommodates western oriented theories of state-building suggested by prominent scholars such as Charles Tilly and Stein Rokkan, and Barkey’s complimentary model of state formation for non-western societies. The key objective of this article is to scrutinize the relationship between the state and religion during the old and the new state-building processes of Turkey. This study provides systematic empirical evidence to the argument that Millennium has witnessed a well-organized counter state-building process carried on by the government of the Justice and Development Party (AKP)

There is a common Western scholarly tendency to see Muslim countries as a uniformed culture when considering gender equality and women’s rights issues. This article analyzes the variance of gender equality policies between Muslim countries while questioning those arguments and the arguments that see Islamic religious heritage as one of the most powerful barrier to gender equality in the world. For this aim, this study uses new original scales of gender equality policies developed to measure the scope of gender equality policies around the world. These scales facilitated us to comparatively analyze gender equality policies in 84 countries, 20 of which are Muslim countries. Analyzes of this study demonstrates that there is a significant variance of gender equality policies between Muslim countries. Moreover, empirical evidence provided by this study also shows that Muslim countries in general adopts worse gender equality policies than non-Muslim countries.

Esat Mahmut Karakurt`un roman(s)larında erkek kahramanlar

Cataloged from PDF version of article.Esat Mahmut Karakurt (1902-1977) was an influential writer of Turkish literature in the Republican period, especially with his romance, adventure, and spy narratives that reached a large female audience. After he published his first collection of short stories in 1926, Karakurt wrote a total of 16 novels until 1960. His novels, which were serialized first in newspapers, helped increase their circulation, and most volumes were reprinted eight to ten times. All Karakurt narratives were adapted at least once as screenplays. Because they are not considered “serious” literature, few analyses of popular romances are available in both Turkish and western literary studies, and the ones that exist are mostly devoted to women authors and their heroines. Therefore, this thesis aims both to revitalize the semi-forgotten novelistic romances of an influential author, and to fill a gap in romance studies by examining a male author’s approach to romance by analyzing his heroes. The thesis focuses on two of Esat Mahmut Karakurt’s novels, namely Allaha Ismarladık (Goodbye, 1936) and İlk ve Son (The First and the Last, 1940), although frequent references are made to the author’s other novels as well. The theoretical framework of the study is influenced by Tania Modleski’s and Janice Radway’s analyses that are guided by feminist and psychoanalytic considerations, as well as by John G. Cawelti’s work focusing on the structure of romance. In this three-part thesis, first, the physical, educational, and professional attributes, the relations of love, and the ideological discourses of the male characters in Karakurt’s novels are analyzed. It is observed that these heroes are often handsome bachelors in their thirties, successful at work, and fond of stylish clothing; their attitude towards women and love is distant; and they share a nationalistic and conservative worldview. Then, these common traits are discussed in the context of the generic qualities of romance and what they mean in terms of female readers’ fantasies.
