The Referential Uses of Demonstratives in Kerinci Malay, Indonesia
Demonstratives are pervasive and ubiquitous in every human language. This study explores further evidence from Kerinci, a Malayic sub-variety spoken in Sumatra, Indonesia. It highlights the referential uses of the Kerinci proximal demonstratives ineh/neh 'this' and the distal demonstrative itoh/toh 'that'. It is based on a corpus containing eight hours of recordings. The basic indexical functions of demonstratives within the referential domain are sketched from three perspectives, namely syntactic contexts, deictic expressions, and pragmatic uses. In light of the evidence presented, this study supports the most accepted principle that demonstratives are universal. However, this research also suggests that the form, use, and meaning of the Kerinci demonstratives are language-specific as presented in this paper
Challenging the patriarchal culture; Feminist critical discourse analysis of the Indonesian environmental heroines
This study unveils the representations of women in the documentary film, Tanah Ibu Kami, which depicts women’s movements defending nature from corporations in four islands in Indonesia. It utilizes feminist critical discourse analysis which incorporates critical discourse analysis and feminist studies to disclose perplexing hegemonic power relations. The data in this study are taken from the transcription of the dialogues in the film. Some extracts constructing the representations of women in the film are extracted for further analysis. Interviews were conducted with the film’s producer and female figures. The four themes constructing the representations of women are: (1) women in patriarchal culture, (2) women as leaders in environmental movements, (3) women as symbols, and (4) women’s enthusiasm to protecting nature. The paper concludes that women are challenging traditional gender divisions and leading environmental movements. They have become the symbol of courage, bravery, and sacrifice. They are recognized as the equivalent of Kartini, a renowned Indonesian heroine, for all they have done as defenders of the land. They have raised awareness of the importance of caring relations with nature and spread the ecophilosophies by which humans can live in harmony with nature
Some notes on the Semerap dialect of Kerinci and its historical development
This article investigates the historical development of a hitherto undescribed Kerinci variety, the Semerap dialect, from a comparative Malayic perspective. The morphophonological characteristics of Kerinci languages are unusual within the Austronesian language family. This preliminary study, therefore, pays special attention to the characteristic four-way split of the historical root-final *V(C)# in Semerap lexemes: absolute, oblique, K-words, and G-words. Like other Kerinci varieties, the Semerap dialect features a type of phonological word-shape alternation, generally known as “phrasal alternation”, which also impacts on its syntax. This alternation (absolute vs. oblique) is determined by the syntactic position of the root, but also by semantic factors. To gain an accurate understanding of Semerap historical development, I also call attention to non-prenasalized voiced stops (G-phonemes), which also influence the realization of the root-final *V(C)#. Finally, an argument is made to take Kerinci varieties into account for Malay historical linguistics more generally.</p
PEMILIHAN BAHASA DAN SIKAP BAHASA PADA MASYARAKAT PONDOK TINGGI KERINCI
This study aims at investigating language choice and language attitudes among the Pondok Tinggi community, in the Kerinci region, Indonesia. The subjects of this study were two groups of informants consisting of 10 members of the older generation and 10 of the younger. A sociolinguistic questionnaire was used to explore the language choice of the informants and an interview was conducted to examine attitudes towards the languages they speak. The results of this study show that the older generation uses Pondok Tinggi in various domains and for different functions while most of the younger generation has started to leave it behind and instead uses the dominant languages, like Indonesian and Minangkabau. The language attitude of both generations towards Indonesian is very positive. It is considered to have economic value and is useful for the future. The old generation shows a neutral attitude towards Minangkabau. The attitude towards Minangkabau tends to be generally positive among the younger generation. It is considered as a social language. The younger generation expressed a negative attitude towards Pondok Tinggi, considering it unsophisticated and of no economic value. Although the older generation uses Pondok Tinggi in daily life, their attitude towards it is not positive. Parents do not transmit Pondok Tinggi to children in the home domain. When intergenerational transmission breaks down, there will be a sharp decline in the use of Pondok Tinggi. Sooner or later it will lose its speakers. Without speakers, it will die.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemilihan bahasa dan sikap bahasa masyarakat Pondok Tinggi, Kerinci, Indonesia. When Women Are the Bosses: Linguistic Strategies in Managing Problematic Discourses
The exercise of power in leadership may involve conflicts, especially in precarious situations. Politeness strategies come into practice to cushion the aftermath of face-threatening acts that presumably trigger tension. This study aims to shed light on female leaders' linguistic strategies in managing problematic discourses involving older male subordinates in the Indonesian university context. The naturalistic data was obtained from recorded meetings. The study results depict that the female leader employs both direct and indirect strategies in handling problematic issues, especially when the female leader has to face up to senior subordinates. She adopts direct strategies to convey important messages that have to be obeyed by the employees. On the other hand, she adheres to the cultural norms that oblige younger people to show respect to older people by using indirect strategies. The politeness strategies employed in her utterances show how culture shapes communication approaches. In general, a female leader has to have a range of sophisticated linguistic competence in a high-rank managerial position

Implementasi Teknik Role play dengan Project-Based Learning untuk Meningkatkan Keterampilan Listening dan Speaking Pada Mata Kuliah Bahasa Inggris II
This study described the implementation of role-play in enhancing listening and speaking skills using PjBL in the English II course. Through a qualitative descriptive approach where the researcher acts as an observer and participant in the classroom, this study indicated that the role-play technique allows students to use English in real-life situations actively. Students can enhance their listening and speaking skills, boost their confidence in communication, and practice teamwork and collaboration within the groups. The project-based role-play makes language learning more relevant and authentic. These insights could shape the future EFL/ESL teaching techniques by emphasizing the transformative role of project-based role-play techniques in language education. By integrating such techniques into their pedagogical practices, language teachers can create dynamic learning environments that foster comprehensive language acquisition
Constructing a discourse of hope and inspiration: A positive discourse analysis of Joko Widodo’s press statements on COVID-19
Using positive discourse analysis as a framework, this article examines Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s press statements on the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on how he constructed a message of hope and inspiration. The analysis demonstrates that Widodo used his language to encourage the people of Indonesia to be resilient, remain positive, and collaborate with the government to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic. The findings reveal that metaphor, lexicalisation, and rationalisation were the three main strategies that helped Widodo to construct his message of hope and inspiration and to formulate an emancipatory discourse intended to liberate the people of Indonesia from the difficulties of the pandemic and chart a way forward in the post-pandemic period. The study underscores the crucial role of language as a resource for hope and as a response strategy during a crisis as well as its significance in helping individuals, communities, nations, and societies make sense of their experiences and (re)imagine a positive future despite their present predicament
