Artificial neural networks in estimation of hydrocyclone parameter d50c with unusual input variables

    No full text
The accuracy in the estimation of hydrocyclone parameter, d50c, can substantially be improved by application of artificial neural networks (ANN). With ANN, many nonconventional operational variables such as water and solid split ratios, overflow and underflow densities, apex and spigot flowrates can easily be incorporated as the input parameters in the prediction of d50c. The ANN yields high correlation of data, hence it can be used in automatic control and multiphase operations of hydrocyclones

Fuzzy rule interpolation for multidimensional input spaces in determining d50c of hydrocyclones

    No full text
Fuzzy rule-based systems have been very popular in many engineering applications. In mineral engineering, fuzzy rules are normally constructed using some fuzzy rule extraction techniques to establish the determination model in predicting the d50c of hydrocyclones. However, when generating fuzzy rules from the available information, it may result in a sparse fuzzy rule base. The use of more than one input variable is also common in hydrocyclone data analysis. This paper examines the application of fuzzy interpolation to resolve the problems using sparse fuzzy rule bases, and to perform analysis of fuzzy interpolation in multidimensional input spaces

Emotion reflective entity (EREN): Teaching emotional intelligence to children through storytelling with a conversational agent

    No full text
Emotions create feelings that have effects on someone\u27s behavior while emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to control emotions. The best time to teach EI is from 5 to 10 years old through parental guidance; however, not all children have a parent figure and can hinder the emotional growth. This thesis suggests leveraging technology in the form of a conversational agent, Emotional Reflective ENtity (EREN), in teaching EI to children through storytelling. EREN is an empathetic conversational agent that can detect emotions from the child\u27s utterance, and reply accordingly. Utilizing a dialogue model that is patterned after Gottman, Katz, and Hooven (1996)\u27s Emotion Coaching Approach, EREN helps the child sort out his/her emotions, while listening and empathizing as the child narrates his/her story. To do this, EREN adapted Oral Storytelling ENtity (ORSEN)\u27s Feedback, Pumping and Recollecting dialogue moves, and introduced Confirming and Recollecting dialogue strategies. Results from validation with a psychologist and end users showed that EREN is able to detect emotions correctly with an accuracy of 80.56% and 71.39% respectively. Child participants, on the other hand, acknowledged EREN as a human (3%), a friend (3%), and a therapist (3%)

    No full text

Sarıhan, Adem (Bilecik, Author) Eren, Erdal (Bilecik, Author) Eren, Bilge (Bilecik, Author)Enhanced-flux polysulfone membranes were prepared with poly (2,5-benzimidazole) additive. Structural and morphological characterizations of prepared membranes were performed by using Scanning electron microscope and Infrared spectroscopy techniques. Hydrophilicity, porosity and pore structure of the composite membranes were investigated with wet-dry membrane weight and contact angle measurements. Flux, rejection and fouling resistance tests were performed by using cross-flow filtration studies. Scanning electron microscope images showed that a low ratio of poly (2,5-benzimidazole) additive increased the top and bottom skin layer thickness and membrane structure turned from finger-like to sponge-like but increasing the poly (2,5-benzimidazole) ratio changed the pore structure to finger-like again. Infrared spectra showed that good interactions were established between poly (2,5-benzimidazole) and polysulfone. Contact angles of the membranes decreased from 60 degrees to 38 degrees with the addition of poly (2,5-benzimidazole) which proved the excellent hydrophilicity of the membranes. Also increasing the hydrophilicity was supported by Infrared spectra. At 200 kPa, pure water fluxes of the membranes increased from 228 to 455 L/m(2).h. Bovine serum albumin rejection also increased with the addition of poly (2,5-benzimidazole), especially with low additive ratios. Flux recovery ratios of the membranes increased about 20% after the addition of poly (2,5-benzimidazole) and this showed that poly (2,5-benzimidazole) blended composite membranes have higher fouling resistance than pristine polysulfone membrane. Also, poly (2,5-benzimidazole) blended polysulfone membranes compared with poly [2,2-(m-phenylene)-5,5-bibenzimidazole] blended membrane which was our previous study. The comparison showed that that poly (2,5-benzimidazole) more effective and functional additive than poly [2,2-(m-phenylene)-5,5-bibenzimidazole] with its higher flux performance, fouling resistance and hydrophilicity characteristics. And also, poly (2,5-benzimidazole) additive more useful than poly [2,2-(m-phenylene)-5,5-bibenzimidazole] for using additive in membranes because of its so easy synthesis in one step, inexpensive monomer and low-cost advantages.

In this study, the use of live load distribution factors (LLDF) that application and calculation properties are defined in the AASHTO Bridge Specification, in the analysis of bridges is investigated. For this purpose, LLDF calculations of three spans of 30-30-30 m and 33-50-38 m bridges is made according to AASHTO Specification. These bridges are analyzed by Line-Girder method and calculated LLDF coefficients are used in the analysis. The 30-30-30 m bridge is analyzed by SAP2000 program and the 33-50-38 m bridge is analyzed by CSiBridge program. In the analysis made with these programs, LLDF coefficients are automatically included in the calculations by the program. As a result of the study, it was seen that the results obtained from the Linear-Girder analysis were very close to the results obtained with the SAP2000 and CSiBridge programs which perform precise and exact analysis. Thus, the accuracy and appropriateness of the use of LLDF calculations in structural analysis according to AASHTO Design Specification have been demonstrated

    No full text
Purpose Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a mitochondrial disease. However, the underlying role of mitochondrial genetics has not yet been completely elucidated. Evaluation of D-loop nucleotide variations with respect to statistical significance and clinical data distribution. Methods Genomic DNAs were extracted from the peripheral blood samples of patients with biopsy-proven 150 NASH as well as from 150 healthy individuals to explore the functional D-loop region responsible for the replication and transcription of the mitochondrial genome. DNA sequencing by capillary electrophoresis analysis was performed for the D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA containing the hypervariable region I, and restriction fragment length polymorphism with MnlI analysis was performed for the m.16189 T/C D-loop variant. Results The m.A16318C variant was detected only in patients with NASH and approached significance level. Based on clinical data, six variants associated with histological subgroups of NASH and NASH-complicated diseases were identified. In patients with NASH, the m.16129 AA genotype was associated with advanced-stage fibrosis; the m.16249 CC genotype was associated with advanced lobular inflammation and advanced-stage histological steatosis; the m.16296 TT genotype was associated with hypothyroidism; the m.16163 GG and m.16294 TT genotypes were associated with metabolic syndrome; and the m.16256 TT+CT genotypes were associated with type II diabetes. In patients with NASH, microRNAs were estimated by targeting the significant variants identified in this study. Conclusion These findings suggest that NASH may be associated with D-loop nucleotide variations and that microRNA-based in vitro and/or in vivo studies may be developed by targeting the D-loop variants
