    Contamination Issues in Ambient Pressure Experiments

    Contamination is the most common and arguably the most significant problem scientists are facing in experimental surface science research that is practiced in the presence of gases. It is fair to say that contamination problems are often worse with ambient pressures compared to conventional experiments in vacuum. It is one of the main reasons for poor reproducibility in this field and in relevant basic and applied research fields like heterogeneous catalysis and electrochemistry. Whilst some type of contaminants are more innocent and only hinder quantitative analysis, some are harmful as they change the outcome of the experiments. In this chapter, the potential sources of contamination are summarized and some solutions are suggested. Examples of commonly observed contaminants such as hydrocarbons, oxygenated hydrocarbons, and adsorbed species of traces gases are presented. The scope of this chapter is restricted to ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy studies on single crystal surfaces, but similar problems exist on other sample surfaces or with other techniques such as x-ray absorption spectroscopy and sum frequency generation spectroscopy

    Interaction of ionic and atomic species of hydrogen isotopes (protium, deuterium and tritium) with transition metals and carbon materials is an important subject of research in the condensed matter physics and material science fields. Other than the fundamental aspects of physics, the topic also has a special importance in magnetic confinement fusion and nanoelectronics applications. With the aim of providing some insight to this topic, this thesis reports experimental investigations on the electronic, optical, mechanical and chemical properties of several material systems including molybdenum/deuterium, rhodium/deuterium, gold/protium and hydrogenated layered carbon. Introduction of hydrogen into initially pure metals and onto layered carbon materials is achieved by plasma treatment. The next generation fusion reactor (ITER) will include plasma facing, electromagnetic radiation reflecting components which will be made of either molybdenum or rhodium. Hydrogen in transition metals may act as an electron donor or an acceptor, changing the electronic band structure of its host. It can also result in increased number of lattice distortions, defect sites and inelastic scattering events reducing the optical transitions. Both directly imply that optical properties of these metals are changed. In this thesis, it is shown that deuterium acts as an electron acceptor in molybdenum, but an electron donor in rhodium. Both cases are investigated with various experimental techniques including photoelectron spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, spectroscopic reflectometry, spectrophotometry, specific resistivity and direct surface morphology imaging techniques. Rhodium/deuterium system is not stable in air due to a catalytic reaction between deuterium and oxygen, whereas molybdenum/deuterium system is stable because deuterium is strongly bound to defect sites. In the case of molybdenum, the research is extended to investigations on the partial delamination of the coated films and kinetic roughening of the surface caused by high ion flux. Further research on thin film buckling was performed using gold coatings, where intense partial delamination from the substrate was observed even after exposure to protium plasma with a low ion flux. This mechanical deformation is attributed to high compressive stress exerted on the gold films as a result dynamic protium inventory exceeding the protium solubility of the film. The wall materials of some of the fusion reactors currently in operation consist of graphite. Therefore, interactions of graphite with hydrogen plasma have been investigated extensively in the fusion community. A recent interest is utilizing hydrogen plasma in milder conditions for chemical modifications of graphite and graphene without chemical or physical sputtering. Hydrogenated graphite and graphene were also investigated in this thesis. It is shown with scanning probe techniques, photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy that hydrogenation of graphite changes its surface corrugation, valence band structure, surface electron density and vibrational modes. Moreover, it is shown that hydrogenation can be achieved locally and work function changes of the graphene surface can be mapped with Kelvin probe force microscopy. The outcomes of the thesis are aimed to aid the fusion community in terms of material choice for the light reflecting components considered to be used in the new generation reactors, as well as the carbon community in terms of helping the comprehension of properties of hydrogenated graphene

    Cumhuriyet dönemi edebiyatçılarından Selçuk Baran, döneminde değeri anlaşılamamış edebî başarısı ölümünden sonra fark edilmiş talihsiz yazarlarımızdandır. Hukuk Eğitimi almasına rağmen çocukluğundan itibaren ilgili olduğu edebiyata yönelmiş, en fazla hikâye türünde eserler kaleme almıştır. Eserlerinde daha çok mutsuz, hüzünlü kadınlara, hayata tutunamayan erkeklere yer vermiştir. İçine kapanık yazar, sağlığında edebiyat sahasında fark edilmemiş olmanın üzüntüsünü yıllarca yaşamış ölmeden önce günlüklerine yazmıştır. Tüm bunlara rağmen dile hâkimiyeti, dil ve üslubundaki kalitesi ile sonradan takdir toplayan yazar edebiyatımızın önemli isimlerindendir. Bu tezin amacı, Selçuk Baran'ı ?Hayatı, Eserleri ve Sanatı? çerçevesinde incelemektir. Böylelikle yazarın Türk Edebiyatındaki konumu tam olarak belirlenmeye çalışılacaktır.Selçuk Baran, one of the women of letters in the Republican Era, is one of our infectious writes whose literature success was recognized after his death. Although he received law education, he turned towards literature, which he had interested in since his childhood, and mostly wrote short stories. In his works, he gave place for unhappy, desperate women and men who could not hold on to life. The author, being introvert, experienced the sadness of not being noticed in the literary circles and wrote about this in his dairies before his death. In spite of all these, the author, whose quality in language and style won general approval after his death, is one of the important names in our literature. The aim of this thesis is to study Selçuk Baran in terms of his ?Life, Works and Art?. Thus, the position of the author in Turkish Literature will be determined definitely

    Tildada tradicionalmente de apolítica, la poesía de Józef Baran representa, no obstante, un lúcido, sentido y coherente intento por defender la dignidad del ser humano a través de la literatura. Nacida de la compasión por el sufrimiento del otro, la poesía de Baran supone una vindicación permanente del valor de la vida y de la importancia de que revisten los pequeños placeres que ésta nos ofrece, llegando en último término a plantearse el sentido de la existencia y el valor que para el hombre posee lo trascendente. La Poética de Baran se halla en consonancia con los presupuestos éticos que defiende a través de sus versos: con su estilo sencillo, directo, teñido de lirismo y de una amable ironía. Esta poesía busca ante todo entablar un diálogo con el lector, a quien invita a discutir las grandes cuestiones filosóficas que el poeta ha querido plantear en su obra.Traditionally regarded as apolitical, the poetical work by Józef Baran aclually represents a lucid and coherent attempt to vindicate human dignity. Consequently, an ultimate concern of this poetry is the reason of suffering, while a recurrent topic is a self-restrained sense of carpe diem, which often leads to an enlightening inquity into perennial metaphysical questions (life, death, eternity, God). Baran's Poetics rather reflects his main concerns and his personal ethics: his distinctive, personal style (plain, direct, sometimes ironic, sometimes lyric, resembies a dialogic resort, which consciously urges his reader to jointly discuss those philosophical questions raised by the author in his poems

    This paper aims to present the issue of general clauses that define the scope of contractual freedom in settlements which have been concluded in disputes between the employee and the employer. The aspect of mutual concessions is also discussed. The violation of the problem of justified interest is considered. The paper shows that general clauses are not mutually exclusive, but usually overlap in a settlement. Therefore, a given settlement may violate various general clauses.
