The Ottoman Empire, undergoing significant territorial losses and a profound decline during the 19th and 20th centuries, faced the Balkan Wars, World War I, and the War of Independence. Officially concluding with the establishment of the Republic in 1923, the empire left enduring political, sociological, and cultural legacies across its vast territories. The acquired lands were not only subjected to taxation and development but were also subject to Turkish and Muslim assimilation efforts. This article focuses on families like the Ercan family, who were resettled in the gained territories and lived there for centuries. Following the War of Independence and the subsequent Treaty of Lausanne, these individuals were repatriated to their homeland as part of the Turkish-Greek population exchange. Simultaneously, Anatolian residents of Greek descent were returned to Greece. The Ercan family experienced the challenges of this period firsthand during their migration from Thessaloniki to Turkey, embodying nearly all the difficulties that our article will address. This study investigates and analyzes the socio-cultural, political, and economic effects of the 1923 Turkish-Greek population exchange based on the experiences of the Ercan family.Özlem Elif İşler, HIST200-20 (2023-2024 Fall); 1by Özlem Elif İşler
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Good action on a finite group
Let G and A be finite groups with A acting on G by automorphisms.
In this paper we introduce the concept of “good action”; namely we say the action of A on G is good, if H = [H,B]C (B) for every subgroup B of A and every B- invariant subgroup H of G. This definition allows us to prove a new noncoprime Hall-Higman type theorem. If A is a nilpotent group acting on the finite solvable group G with C (A) = 1, a long standing conjecture states that h(G) <= l(A) where h(G) is the Fitting height of G and l(A) is the number of primes dividing the order of A counted with multiplicities. As an application of our result we prove the main theorem of this paper which states that the above conjecture is true if A and G have odd order, the action of A on G is good and some other fairly general conditions are satisfied
Means of defense about Substantive Law in The Law of Civil Procedure
Bir savunmanın def'i olması usul hukuku açısından önemlidir. Çünkü def'inin dikkate alınıp hükmün verilmesi ileri sürülmesi şartına bağlıdır. Davalı def'iyi ileri sürmemişse, hakim tarafların bildirdiği vakıalardan bir def'inin varlığını öğrense bile bunu dikkate alamaz. Bu nedenle def'i esasa cevap süresi olan on gün içinde ileri sürülmelidir. The defendant may reject the lawsuit based on the new cases that not put forward. In this case the defendant asserts that the right claimed by the plaintiff is not present, or be made subject to an appeal without debate of new cases that the plaintiff put forwards. These Cases that the defendant based on called means of defenses. Means of the defendant's defense may be related to procedural and substantive law. Means of defense of substantive is objections to the plea. In fact the plea is a right to bring avoidance to the defendant of an act of the debtor on the basis of a special cause. The defense that is plea is important in terms of procedural law. Because provision must be taken into account is put forward for set-off defense. Unless the defendant put forward the plea, the judge can not take into account even knew it the existence of a set-off defense. Therefore response time basis, that plea must be applied within ten days forward. In contrast to the behavior is the prohibition of modification or expansion of defense. This situation can be removed with only possibility of plaintiff and correction. On the other hand, the objection is an defense that obstacle to present of the right and made the right to an appeal. The importance of the objections in terms of procedural law, the case file at point is understood and impenetrability. Because understood the reasons for objections to the case file, mainly put forward in response time is not mandatory. The judge understands from the case material adduced by the presence of an objection, it may take into account ex-officio. On the other hand the case file can not be taken into account ex officio by the judge not understood the objections. However, objections to the case file that is preventing the birth of a right is understood but also because of the right to be present before birth can be taken into account ex officio by the judge accepted. Indeed, the case file, not understood in terms of objections is the prohibition of modification or expansion of defense. This situation can be removed with only possibility of plaintiff and correction. In addition, the case file appeals understood the decision of the appeals and correction even if the path can be taken into account
Acute lung injury following thermal insult to the skin: a light and transmission electron microscopial study
Oxygen radicals are involved in the development of burn shock and distant organ injury in animal models of trauma. Neutrophils are likely the source of reactive oxygen metabolites as a result of the systemic inflammatory reaction to a local burn insult. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of neutrophils in the development of lung injury related to second degree skin burn in rats. Rats were decapitated at two hours following burn injury. Lung tissue samples were removed and examined biochemically and histologically. Tissue-associated myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, which is an index of neutrophil infiltration, was increased considerably in lung tissue at 2 h after burn injury. Disturbance of alveolar structure, intraalveolar hemorrhage and prominent neutrophil infiltration indicated lung parenchymal injury. Ultrastructural examination of the lung revealed that pneumocytes type I, pneumocytes type II and capillary endothelial cells were degenerated. The data presented here suggest that neutrophil accumulation in the lung is involved in pathogenesis of this distant organ after burn injury
The effect of angilotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors on experimental colitis in rats
The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of ACE inhibition on trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced colonic inflammation in rats by using captopril and lisinopril. In treatment groups, the rats were treated with ACE inhibitors, captopril or lisinopril (0.1 and I mg/kg/day; intraperitoneally). The drugs were given 5 min after induction of colitis and the treatment was continued for 3 days. Three days after the induction of colitis, all rats were decapitated. The distal colon was weighed and the mucosal lesions were scored at both macroscopical at microscopic levels. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and collagen content were assessed in tissue samples. Formation of reactive oxygen species in colonic samples was monitored by using chemiluminescence technique. Serum TNF-alpha level was assessed in trunk blood. Captopril treatment was found to be beneficial in all parameters, except colonic glutathione content. On the other hand, although stimulation of lipid peroxidation and increase in serum TNF-a level were successfully prevented by lisinopril, the morphology of the lesions remained unchanged. In conclusion, sulphydryl and non-sulphydryl ACE inhibitors, captopril and lisinoptil do not seem to be similarly effective in TNBS-induced colitis model at least at the doses tested in our study. Protective Effects of Pycnogenol against Ischemia Reperfusion-Induced Oxidative Renal Injury in Rats
Introduction. Oxygen free radicals are involved in pathophysiology of ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. This study was designed to assess the possible protective effect of pycnogenol (PYC) against I/R-induced oxidative renal damage. Materials and methods. Wistar albino rats were unilaterally nephrectomized and subjected to 45 min of renal pedicle occlusion followed by 3 h of reperfusion. PYC (10 mg kg(-1), i.p.) or saline was administered at 15 min prior to ischemia and immediately before the reperfusion period. At the end of the 3 h, rats were decapitated and trunk blood was collected. Creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were measured in the serum samples, while proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, and IL-6 levels were assayed in plasma samples. Kidney samples were taken for the determination of tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) levels, Na+, K+-ATPase, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, and the extent of tissue injury was analyzed microscopically. Results. Ischemia/reperfusion caused a significant decrease in tissue GSH level and Na+, K+-ATPase activity, which was accompanied with significant increases in the renal MDA level and MPO activity. Similarly, serum creatinine and BUN levels, as well as LDH and IL-1 beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha levels, were elevated in the saline-treated I/R group as compared to saline-treated control group. On the other hand, PYC treatment reversed all these biochemical indices, as well as histopathological alterations that were induced by I/R. Conclusions. Findings of the present study suggest that pycnogenol exerts renoprotective effects, via its free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities, that appear to involve the inhibition of tissue neutrophil infiltration

Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1.
