Enrico Mattei and ENI’s Energy Policy in the 1950s and 1960s: An Analysis of its Economic and Political Implications, Both Domestic and International

    No full text
This thesis examines the role of Enrico Mattei in Italian energy policy during the 1950s and 1960s, highlighting how, through the establishment of ENI, he contributed to reducing Italy’s energy dependence on foreign countries and promoting national industrial development. His strategy, based on cooperation with oil-producing nations and on challenging the monopoly of the “Seven Sisters,” turned Italy into an autonomous actor on the international stage during the Cold War. The study also analyzes the economic and political implications of his actions up until his death in 1962

Transboundary Fisheries Management under Implementation Uncertainty

This paper examines how non-binding co-operative agreements on marine fisheries management can be sustained when management plans in participating countries are implemented with error. The effects of implementation uncertainty on voluntary co-operation are compared to those of recruitment uncertainty. A self-enforcing co-operative solution can only be sustained when uncertainty is not too pronounced. Even when a co-operative agreement can be achieved, frequent phases of reversion to non-co-operative harvest levels are needed to support the agreement. The implications of recruitment uncertainty for implicit co-operation are less detrimental than those of implementation uncertainty

The Rebound Effect and Energy Efficiency Policy / Kenneth Gillingham, David Rapson, Gernot Wagner. Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, Milan, 2014 (Nota di lavoro 2014.107) http://www.feem.it/getpage.aspx?id=7159 What do we know about the size of the rebound effect? Should we believe claims that energy efficiency improvements lead to an increase in energy use? This paper clarifies what the rebound effect is, and provides a guide for economists and policymakers interested in its magnitude. We descri..

Estimating Feedback Effect in Technical Change: A Frontier Approach

This study examines whether todays technical change depends on yesterdays technical change. We propose to investigate this feedback effect by using the technical-change component of the Malmquist productivity index. This approach can overcome some problems in alternative patent-citation approaches. We apply the approach by estimating the feedback effect from production data of 25 OECD countries for 1980 through 1997. Our model yields evidence on a positive feedback effect with delays up till eight years. These findings are in line with patent-citation studies and bring us closer to a measure of the social returns to R&D

Combined effects of load factors and booking time on fares: insights from the yield management of a low-cost airline

Based on two strands of theoretical research, this paper provides new evidence on how fares are jointly affected by in-flight seat availability and purchasing date. As capacity-driven theories predict, it emerges that fares monotonically and substantially increase with the flights occupancy rate. Moreover, as suggested in the literature on intertemporal price discrimination, the adoption of advance purchase discounts is widespread as the departure date nears, but it may be part of a U-shaped temporal profile, where discounts are preceded by periods of relatively higher fares. Finally, the intervention of yield management analysts appears to play a substantial role
