BECKETT RESONATING IN ITALY: WHICH TEXT, WHOSE VOICE?

No full text
This paper deals with the issue of translating a self-translated text, focusing on the Italian version of Waiting for Godot by Carlo Fruttero published by Einaudi. In the 1950s, the status of self-translator was still unclear both for the author, who was developing the habit after the success of his first play, and for Fruttero. This produced a situation somewhat confusing: Fruttero translated originally the French play, but several modifications were later introduced starting from the English version in new issues in collected volumes. This was never disclosed in the paratext. The result is that two different Einaudi versions of the Italian Godot are available in the market today, one strictly from the very first French edition by Minuit, the other occasionally integrating or modifying from the English version by Beckett, which had in the meantime come out

The present work intends to discuss the thought of Italo Calvino concerning translation of literary works. It specifically studies the reflections of the author on translation as expressed in his critical essays selected for this research and in the metalinguistic novel If on a winter's night a traveler (1981). The main objective of this work is to identify and to discuss the author.s conceptions on potentials and limitations of translation in its relation with literature

Alcuni esempi di distopia ibrida: Dino Buzzati, Giuseppe Berto e l’eredità degli anni Sessanta

In the Sixties, science fiction finally breaks out in Italy, partially as a result of the driving force given to Urania series by Fruttero and Lucentini. Thus, even more ‘traditional’ writers began to venture into this genre. However, when it comes to dystopia, Italian authors – apart from a few important exceptions – systematically tend to hybridize it with fantastic, grotesque and comedy elements. In particular, love themes seem to be the constant in these hybridizations. The author of the essay aims to explore this peculiar aspect of Italian dystopia, produced by writers not strictly related to the genre, starting from two examples: Il grande ritratto by Dino Buzzati and La fantarca by Giuseppe Berto.

WHO BENEFITS FROM MICROFINANCE? THE IMPACT EVALUATION OF LARGE SCALE PROGRAMS IN BANGLADESH

This paper evaluates the impact of microfinance on household consumption using a new, large and unique cross-section data set from Bangladesh. The richness of the data and program eligibility criterion allow the use of a number of non-experimental impact evaluation techniques, in particular instrumental variable (IV) estimation and propensity score matching (PSM). Estimates from both IV and PSM strategies have been interpreted as average causal effects that are valid for various groups of participants in microfinance. The overall results indicate that the effects of micro loans are not robust across all groups of poor household borrowers. It appears that the poorest of the poor participants are among those who benefit most. The impact estimates are lower, or sometimes even negative, for those households marginal to the participation decision. The effects of participation are, in general, stronger for male borrowers. These results hold across different specifications and methods, including correction for various sources of selection bias (including possible spill-over effects).Microfinance, treatment effect, Matching, Consumption.

: Objective The aim of the study is to describe the real-world use of the P2Y 12 inhibitor cangrelor as a bridging strategy in patients at high thrombotic risk after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and referred to surgery requiring perioperative withdrawal of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). Materials and Methods We collected data from nine Italian centers on patients with previous PCI who were still on DAPT and undergoing nondeferrable surgery requiring DAPT discontinuation. A perioperative standardized bridging protocol with cangrelor was used. Results Between December 2017 and April 2019, 24 patients (mean age 72 years; male 79%) were enrolled. All patients were at high thrombotic risk after PCI and required nondeferrable intermediate to high bleeding risk surgery requiring DAPT discontinuation (4.6 ± 1.7 days). Cangrelor infusion was started at a bridging dose (0.75 μg/kg/min) 3 days before planned surgery and was discontinued 6.6 ± 1.5 hours prior to surgical incision. In 55% of patients, cangrelor was resumed at 9 ± 6 hours following surgery for a mean of 39 ± 38 hours. One cardiac death was reported after 3 hours of cangrelor discontinuation prior to surgery. No ischemic outcomes occurred after surgery and up to 30-days follow-up. The mean hemoglobin drop was <2 g/dL; nine patients received blood transfusions consistent with the type of surgery, but no life-threatening or fatal bleeding occurred. Conclusion Perioperative bridging therapy with cangrelor is a feasible approach for stented patients at high thrombotic risk and referred to surgery requiring DAPT discontinuation. Larger studies are warranted to support the safety of this strategy

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy in Malignant Melanoma of the Head and Neck: A Single Center Experience

Purpose: This study evaluated the characteristics of patients with head and neck (H&N) melanoma who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNLB) and assessed the clinical course of patients categorizing subjects according to SLNB status and melanoma location (scalp area vs. non-scalp areas). Methods: Patients undergoing SLNB for melanoma of H&N from 2015 to 2021 were prospectively characterized according to sentinel lymph node (SLN) status. SPECT/CT had been previously performed. Patients were followed until the first adverse event to evaluate progression-free survival. Results: 93 patients were enrolled. SLNB was negative in 75 patients. The median Breslow index was higher for patients with positive SLNB compared with patients with negative SLNB. In addition, the Breslow index was higher for melanoma of the scalp compared with non-scalp melanoma. The median follow-up was 24.8 months. Progression occurred at the systemic level in the 62.5% of cases. There was a significant association between positive SLNB and progression (p-value < 0.01) of disease, with lower progression-free survival for patients with melanoma of the scalp compared with those with melanoma at other anatomic sites (p-value: 0.15). Conclusions: Scalp melanomas are more aggressive than other types of H&N melanomas. Sentinel lymph node status is the strongest prognostic criterion for recurrence

Treatment Patterns and Outcomes of Stage III Melanoma Patients with Positive Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: A Real-Life Experience

Background: Advancements in managing stage III melanoma have involved the implementation of adjuvant therapies alongside a simultaneous decrease in the utilization of completion lymph node dissection (CLND) following positive sentinel node biopsy (SLNB). Methods: This retrospective study from the University of Turin’s Dermatology Clinic analyzed relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) among stage III melanoma patients (n = 157) who underwent CLND after positive SLNB versus those who did not receive such procedure. Results: Patients without CLND had a median RFS of 49 months (95% CI 42-NA), while CLND recipients showed 51 months (95% CI 31-NA) (p = 0.139). The 48-month OS for non-CLND patients was 79.8% (95% CI 58.2–91.0) versus 79.2% (95% CI 67.5–87.0) for CLND recipients (p = 0.463). Adjusted Hazard Ratios through inverse probability treatment weighting revealed the impact of CLND to be insignificant on RFS (aHR 0.90, 95% CI 0.37–2.22) and marginal on OS (aHR 0.41, 95% CI 0.13–1.21). Conversely, adjuvant therapy significantly reduced the risk of relapse (aHR 0.46, 95% CI 0.25–0.84), irrespective of CLND. Conclusions: This study corroborates the growing evidence that CLND after positive SLNB does not enhance RFS or OS, while emphasizing the crucial role of adjuvant therapy, be it immunotherapy or targeted therapy, in reducing the risk of relapse in melanoma patients with positive SLNB
