Jorgen Leth films are often described as experimental, wich leads to a different approach to content creation in these documentaries. Working with visual narrative the author uses unconventional approach – setting high aesthetic standarts for picture and quality requirements for sound, at the same time managing to tell the story. What are the documentary genre interpretations and how technological proces determines the visual aesthetics of the film? The paper analyzes two different films, not only by stories, but also in their styles. The author will also interview four professionals who will explain more about Lets work, as well as the notion of ”documentary”, and various choices faced by directors during the process of film-making. Jorgen Leth - Master of Danish (Documentary) Film

    No full text
This thesis is a monograph on the work of famous Danish filmmaker Jorgen Leth and the main aim of it is to introduce this author to Czech readers. It summarizes basic biographical data and the roots of Leth?s artistic inspiration and focuses on his distinctive filmic style. By the way of several examples, it shows basic creative methods and main thematic areas of his films. The text is based ? besides of sources quoted in the references ? on the personal interview with Jørgen Leth conducted in July 2008 during the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary. Important part of the thesis creates exhaustively elaborated list of Leth?s films supplemented with short annotations and some pictures captured from the movies. Except of full-length experimental film The Five Obstructions (2005) directed together with Lars von Trier, there is a lack of knowledge of his work in the Czech Republic. This thesis wants to contribute to better acquaintance with this interesting and inspiring author

    The Convict King

James Francis Hogan (1855–1924) wrote several histories of Irish colonisation in Australia. His family emigrated to Melbourne in 1856 where he became a respected author. After returning to Britain in 1893 he was elected a Member of Parliament, and he later became Professor of Irish History at University College Cork. This book, first published in 1891, retells the extraordinary life of Jorgen Jorgenson (1780–1841), a Danish adventurer, accomplished fraudster, amateur playwright and freelance preacher, who once declared himself the ruler of Iceland and eventually became Constable of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). Working from Jorgenson's autobiography (originally printed in the Van Diemen's Land Annual 1835 and 1838), Hogan describes his early adventures as a sailor, his 'liberation' of Iceland from Denmark in 1809, his employment as a British spy, his imprisonment at Newgate and arrival in Tasmania as a convict, and his participation in the infamous Aboriginal clearances there. </jats:p

GH and the cardiovascular system: an update on a topic at heart

    No full text
In this review, the importance of growth hormone (GH) for the maintenance of normal cardiac function in adult life is discussed. Physiological effects of GH and underlying mechanisms for interactions between GH and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and the cardiovascular system are covered as well as the cardiac dysfunction caused both by GH excess (acromegaly) and by GH deficiency in adult hypopituitary patients. In both acromegaly and adult GH deficiency, there is also increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality possibly linked to aberrations in GH status. Finally, the status of the GH/IGF-I system in relation to heart failure and the potential of GH as a therapeutic tool in the treatment of heart failure are reviewed in this article. © 2014 The Author(s)

Longitudinal grey-box model identification of a tailless flapping-wing MAV based on free-flight data

Tailless flapping wing micro aerial vehicles (FMWAV) are known for their light weight and agility. However, given the fact that these FWMAVs have been recently developed, their flight dynamics have not yet been fully explained. In this paper we will develop local time-averaged longitudinal grey-box models based on closed-loop system identification techniques, where free-flight experimental data, obtained from the DelFly Nimble, is used to estimate and validate the local grey-box models. With these models we can take the first steps towards fully understanding the flight dynamics of tailless FWMAVs. The consequence of the tailless configuration is inherent instability and therefore tailless FWMAVs are generally more complex, compared to its tailed counterpart, and require a active feedback control system. The active feedback control system introduces additional challenges to the system identification process since it follows that feedback control works against the objectives of system identification. Dynamic effects that play a major role when studying the dynamic behaviour of FWMAVs are the sub-flap and the flap cycle-averaged effects. However, in this paper, we are only interested in modelling the flap cycle-averaged (time-averaged) effects of the DelFly Nimble. Based on this approach, grey-box models were estimated and validated for airspeeds near hover condition 0 m/s, up to 1.0 m/s forward flight. Despite the complexity of the system, we were able to obtain low-order local models that are both efficient and accurate (R2 values up to 0.92) to predict the flight dynamic behaviour of the DelFly Nimble and can therefore be used for stability analysis, simulation and control design.Aerospace Engineerin

Ray Yep’s book is a case study of the changing dynamics between the local state and managers of collective township and village enterprises (TVE, xianzhen qiye) in rural China. The fieldwork was undertaken from 1995-1998 in Zibo prefecture in Shandong province (a map and basic demographic and socio-economic data would have been useful). In seven chapters the author focuses on how managers in TVEs have become economically and politically empowered partners of the local state since rural refor..
