With the article, it is offered a tribute to the work of Manfred Max Neef, Chilean intellectual, politician, ecologist and economist, Alternative Nobel Prize winner in Economics, a pioneer in ecological criticism of both productivism and extractivism in Latin America. The methodology used in this work is based on the review of the main books published by the author, such as Barefoot Economy (1982), Development on a Human Scale (1986), The Lost Dimension (2007), and The Unmasked Economy (2014). It is held as an assumption that Max Neef’s work fits into a Latin American theoretical body, which breaks intellectually with macroeconomic models, be they developmentalist or neoliberal in nature. The originality of his contribution is in the defense of the ecological foundations for human development at a local scale.

Basic human needs in the situation of disabled people: from individual-environment relationship

(texto tomado de la fuente)The proposed present is formulated around the understanding of the human fundamental necessities, this topic will be approached from the individual's perspective with its environment, for that reason its main objective is to understand the ways to satisfy and to carry out appropriate, opportune and efficiently the human fundamental necessities of disability people starting from the recognition of the relationship individual and environment The category "Necessity" is a concept, with a conceptual long development from different perspectives, reason why for this study we will recapture as initial referent some postulates of Manfred Max-Neef and Cabbage (1986) and other later developments that are in this same line. This author breaks up with many developments that preceded him/her and it postulates new forms of understanding the necessities, from a proposal of universal and social conception that is fundamental to sustain this investigative work. The final purpose of this investigation to propose limits that allow to increase the possibilities of realization of the necessities of people disability, starting from the invigoration of the social relationships of the individuals, proposing a development based on the local thing, the community thing, the "small" thing (Mujica, N. Corner, S. 2006), as fundamental axis where people's life is unwrapped and in definitive, the possibilities of human development are summed up. This study is carried out D.C. with the collaboration of six people in disability situation of Bogotá, from a type of qualitative study, with an analytic explanatory level of depth. According to the source of information it will be of mixed type, because one will keep in mind, the documental analysis of the opposing literature starting from the developments of Max-Neef (1986) until today of people in disability situation, the techniques used for the gathering of information, were narration of history of life, interviews to depth, interviews semiestructurada and shop proposed for Max-Neef for interpretation of the womb proposal.MaestríaMagister en Discapacidad e Inclusión Socia

Author response: The synaptic ribbon is critical for sound encoding at high rates and with temporal precision

    No full text
We studied the role of the synaptic ribbon for sound encoding at the synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in mice lacking RIBEYE (RBEKO/KO). Electron and immunofluorescence microscopy revealed a lack of synaptic ribbons and an assembly of several small active zones (AZs) at each synaptic contact. Spontaneous and sound-evoked firing rates of SGNs and their compound action potential were reduced, indicating impaired transmission at ribbonless IHC-SGN synapses. The temporal precision of sound encoding was impaired and the recovery of SGN-firing from adaptation indicated slowed synaptic vesicle (SV) replenishment. Activation of Ca2+-channels was shifted to more depolarized potentials and exocytosis was reduced for weak depolarizations. Presynaptic Ca2+-signals showed a broader spread, compatible with the altered Ca2+-channel clustering observed by super-resolution immunofluorescence microscopy. We postulate that RIBEYE disruption is partially compensated by multi-AZ organization. The remaining synaptic deficit indicates ribbon function in SV-replenishment and Ca2+-channel regulation

PregradoTrabajador SocialEducation, in addition to transmit massively and effectively a myriad of conceptual and technical knowledge, involves the personal development as an individual gets his/her preparation the several aspects of life. Based on it, this work uses as an initial and conceptual guideline the Theory of Human necessities proposed by Maslow, who ranks it in 5 major groups: auto-improvement, acknowledgment, social, security and physiological necessities; this work also takes into account the concept of Max Neef who makes a distinction between necessities, satisfyers and economical goods and as a last conceptual reference, the author Jerónimo de Moragas is quoted for describing some parts of human development seen through the phases of human being. Each chapter of this paper shows the coherence of the phases developed at San Juan Bosco in Giron, among them: Conceptualization, contextualization, characterization of San Juan Bosco College in Giron, and the process developed in such educational institution. We conclude with a proposal of professional intervention called strengthening of the management of the development areas in the student community: creation of the promoter group of San Juan Bosco College in Giron; finally, we stress on the importance of planning, coordinating, performing, evaluating the projects that promotes the integral development for the forrest community which was subjected to the professional intervention of social work

Immune consequences and therapeutic targeting of disrupted RNA splicing in cancer

Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2022Immunotherapies, such as checkpoint blockade, CAR-T cells, and vaccines, have proven to be a valuable tool to treat various types of cancer. This class of therapy capitalizes on the immune system’s natural ability to recognize foreign antigens and kill cancer cells. Typically, many of these therapies have focused on the changes to DNA, particularly point mutations, that mark cancer cells. However, RNA dysregulation is also a frequent characteristic of cancer, and these transcriptomic changes may provide a large repertoire of new targets that previously has not been well studied. In this thesis, I address the question of whether RNA splicing changes can be immunogenic by studying disrupted splicing arising from 1) pharmacologic manipulation and 2) recurrent driver mutations in splicing factors. I demonstrate that drugs targeting splicing machinery can elicit anti-tumor immune responses dependent on splicing-derived neoantigens, and that checkpoint blockade can be used in combination with these drugs to further improve immune response and tumor clearance. I further provide a framework for identifying splicing-derived neoepitopes and use this framework to identify potential immune targets in splicing factor-mutant cancers. I then use mass cytometry-based approaches with leukemic SF3B1-mutant patient samples to characterize the immune environment in SF3B1-mutant cancers and search for antigen-specific T cells that recognize and respond to splicing-derived neoantigens

Author response: Gender bias in scholarly peer review

    No full text
Peer review is the cornerstone of scholarly publishing and it is essential that peer reviewers are appointed on the basis of their expertise alone. However, it is difficult to check for any bias in the peer-review process because the identity of peer reviewers generally remains confidential. Here, using public information about the identities of 9000 editors and 43000 reviewers from the Frontiers series of journals, we show that women are underrepresented in the peer-review process, that editors of both genders operate with substantial same-gender preference (homophily), and that the mechanisms of this homophily are gender-dependent. We also show that homophily will persist even if numerical parity between genders is reached, highlighting the need for increased efforts to combat subtler forms of gender bias in scholarly publishing
