An isotopic substitution method has enabled us to obtain vibrational amplitudes in the linear dimer1dimer^{1} and trimer.2trimer.^{2} A dipole moment of 6.552(35) D has been reported for the dimer3 and we have found 10.6(2) D for the trimer.2trimer.^{2} These lead to induced dipole moments Au of 0.703(3) D for the dimer and 1.75(10) D for the trimer. A similar analysis was made of Δxo(14N)\Delta x_{o}(^{14}N). A mutual polarization model was used to predict the induced dipole moments from the four known electrical multipole moments of HCN and its bond polarizabilities. The results are 0.703 D for the dimer and 1.68 D for the trimer. The calculations give ratios of the dipoles induced in the C-N bonds which are essentially identical with the ratios of the experimental Δχos\Delta \chi_{o}{^{\prime}}s. Equations are derived for calculation of Au of an infinite H-bonded chain and are applied to HCN. The convergence of multipale expansions for the electric field due to a molecular charge distribution will be discussed. The mutual polarization model works so well on HCN dimer and trimer that any charge transfer between the HCN monomers seems likely to be very small or negligible

Phys. 85, 683 (1986).Author Institution: Noyes Chemical Laboratory, University of IllinoisK = 0 transitions have been assigned in the microwave rotational spectra for six isotopic variations of the B2H6HClB_{2}H_{6}-HCl dimer. The homonuclear dimens, with 1B11B^{1}B-{^{11}}B and 10B10B^{10}B-{^{10}}B, have tunneling splittings of several MHz, while the mixed species with 10B11B^{10}B-{^{11}}B and 11B10B^{11}B-{^{10}}B show no tunneling. This contrasts with B3H6HFB_{3}H_{6}-H_{F} which has a torsionally averaged, linear B-B-F structure with no evidence of tunneling.1tunneling.^{1} The line center of the 11B11BH35ClJ=34,K=0^{11}B{^{11}}B-H{^{35}}Cl J = 3 \to 4, K = 0 transition is at 10 186.777 MHz. The splitting due to tunneling is 2.587 MHz, a value which decreases somewhat for both lower and higher J. In the 11B11BH37Cl^{11}B{^{11}}B-H{^{37}}Cl species the splitting for J=34J = 3 - 4 decreases to 2.325 MHz while that in 10B10BH35Cl^{10}B{^{10}}B-H{^{35}}Cl is 4.726 MHz. This indicates that the tunneling motions involve both subunits. Work is in progress to locate the K=±1K = \pm 1 transitions so that accurate rotational constants and the structure can be deduced. The results so far indicate a near linear H-B-Cl configuration

(HF)_{m} and Arn.(HF)mAr_{n}. (HF)_{m}. Or these, the Ar -HF and (HF)2(HF)_{2} dimers were among the first weakly bonded complexes to be detected and characterized by rotational spectroscopy. More recently, we have reported preliminary observations of Ar2HFAr_{2}-HF, a T-shaped trimer,1trimer,^{1} and of Ar3H/DFAr_{3}-H/DF, a symmetric top tetramer,2tetramer,^{2} with the Flygare-Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. These and subsequent results for the Ar/HF system will be presented. Over 20 b-dipole transitions have now been observed in the 4-18 GHz region for both Ar2HFAr_{2}-HF and Ar2DFAr_{2}-DF, and their hyperfine structur analyzed. Fitting of the line centers for Ar2DFAr_{2}-DF with Kirchoff's NBS program3program^{3} gives A.BA^{\prime\prime}. B^{\prime\prime}. and CC^{\prime\prime} rotational constants of 3 506.745(1), 1 744.094(1) and 1 144.478(1) MHz and centrifugal distrition constants (assuming planarity of -38(1), -0.49(1), and -178(3) KHz for τIbbee\tau I_{bbee}. τccaa\tau_{ccaa'} and τaabb\tau _{aabb}. The significance of these and similar results for Ar2HFAr_{2}-HF will be discussed. Analysis of the hyperfine structure shows that the torsional oscillations of the H/DF are anisotorpic. For Ar2HFAr_{2}-HF the average in-plane amplitude 15 32.832.8^{\circ} and the out-of-plane, 29.729.7^{\circ}. A sizeable number (-50) of as yet unassigned lines have been found for the Ar/HF system. Most likely they are from other small clusters such as Ar(HF)2,Ar2(HF)2Ar-(HF)_{2}, Ar_{2}-(HF)_{2}, and Ar4HFAr_{4}-HF. Further efforts are in progress to identify the clusters involved, including a search specifically for Ar4HFAr_{4}-HF. Any new results, or lack of them, will be reported

    IFN-γ and T cells are both required for the development of experimental cerebral malaria during Plasmodium berghei ANKA infection. Surprisingly, however, the role of IFN-γ in shaping the effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response during this infection has not been examined in detail. To address this, we have compared the effector T cell responses in wild-type and IFN-γ(-/-) mice during P. berghei ANKA infection. The expansion of splenic CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells during P. berghei ANKA infection was unaffected by the absence of IFN-γ, but the contraction phase of the T cell response was significantly attenuated. Splenic T cell activation and effector function were essentially normal in IFN-γ(-/-) mice; however, the migration to, and accumulation of, effector CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells in the lung, liver, and brain was altered in IFN-γ(-/-) mice. Interestingly, activation and accumulation of T cells in various nonlymphoid organs was differently affected by lack of IFN-γ, suggesting that IFN-γ influences T cell effector function to varying levels in different anatomical locations. Importantly, control of splenic T cell numbers during P. berghei ANKA infection depended on active IFN-γ-dependent environmental signals--leading to T cell apoptosis--rather than upon intrinsic alterations in T cell programming. To our knowledge, this is the first study to fully investigate the role of IFN-γ in modulating T cell function during P. berghei ANKA infection and reveals that IFN-γ is required for efficient contraction of the pool of activated T cells

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method

    In this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;

    Wave turbulence of a rotating array of quantized vortices in the T → 0 temperature limit

    The dynamics of quantized vortices in the zero temperature limit T0T \rightarrow 0 is currently of great interest, particularly in the case of the Fermi superfluid 3^3He-B. Here we study wave turbulence, generated by the librating motion of a rotating cylindrical container filled with 3^3He-B, in the limit of vanishing viscous forces at temperatures T0.2TcT \leq 0.2 T_{c}. The polarization of the quantized vortices with respect to the axis of rotation is measured using non-invasive NMR techniques. We observe a decrease of the polarization when the librating motion is started, and a two-stage relaxation process when the modulation of the rotation velocity is stopped. The first relaxation process is associated with the dissipation of large-scale flow stored in inertial waves and the solid body rotation of the vortex array. From the decay of these energy reservoirs we determine the rate of energy dissipation of large-scale flow. The later second process is related to the relaxation of Kelvin waves on individual vortices. This process is monitored by the recovery of the polarization. The existence of a Kelvin wave cascade at the lowest temperatures is currently a central open question. We supply some evidence for the cascade
