AN INVESTIGATION OF PRESCHOOLERS' PERCEPTIONS ABOUT SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS THROUGH METAPHORS
Mathematics and science are important concepts that children’s encounter in both daily and educational life. Early childhood is the time in which the first ideas of the mathematics and science developed. In this study, we investigated children’s perceptions about mathematics and science through metaphors in terms of being able to provide rich information. This study was qualitative research in the form of phenomenological. Participants consisted of 88 children from five and six years old groups. As a data collection tool, we used a semi-structured interview form. As a result of the analysis, we found out that there were five positive and one negative category about mathematics. The category that was used most commonly about mathematics was “mathematics as a part of education”. On the other hand, all of the metaphors about science were in the positive category. Metaphors about science were grouped under four categories. The category that included the highest number of metaphors was “science that involves phenomena and creatures in nature”. In conclusion, children’s metaphors about mathematics included elements such as “homework, line, and course”, while the metaphors about science included elements such as “nature, curiosity, and research”
The Relationship between Perspective Taking Skills and Language Development in Preschool Children
Perspective taking is a fundamental skill that helps us to understand others’
thoughts, feelings and perceptions. Past studies have shown that there were
significant relations between young children’s perspective taking abilities and
age, gender, formal schooling and socioeconomic status. The present study was
conducted to investigate the relationship between perspective taking skills and
language development in preschool children. The study sample included 98 three
to five-year-old children (53 girls and 45 boys) attending six kindergartens located
at the city center of Adana, Turkey. Children came from families with similar
demographic characteristics. As data collection instruments, Perspective Taking
Test for Children (PTC) and Peabody Picture-Vocabulary Test were used. Data were
obtained by individual interviews. Firstly, children were presented the PTC. The
next day, Peabody Picture-Vocabulary Test wasapplied to the children. The results
show that there was a significant and positive correlation between perspective
taking skills and language development of the children. These correlations were
high value for the age of three years, moderate for four years old and high for five
years old. It was also determined that language development of children predicted
their perspective taking skills significantl
Narrative strategies in Ford Madox Ford's Parade's End and The Good Soldier
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Includes bibliographical references leaves 117-121In opposition to theories which gave the author pride of place as the
creator of literary works embodying definite meanings, the French thinker
Roland Barthes maintained that it was the reader, and not the author, who
attached meanings to a text. According to Barthes, the major factor which
enabled readers to interpret works of fiction, or to render them "intelligible,"
was their narrative structure. Following Barthes, the French critic Gérard
Genette developed a comprehensive theory of narratives. In the light of
Barthes’s views and Genette’s theory, this dissertation will analyse the English
novelist Ford Madox Ford’s Parade’s End and The Good Soldier. Both works
have narrators who undergo a process of identification with a major character.
Through an analysis of the narrative strategies employed by the narrators, the
dissertation aims to discuss the implications of this process in the
interpretation of these works.Raw, Meltem Kıra
Propping in the Pyramidal Business Groups in Turkey
Gürünlü, Meltem (Arel Author)This article investigates the existence of propping in Turkish business group firms for the years 2010-2016 (150 firms and 1,050 firm-year data in total). It is claimed that pyramidal ownership in Turkey is used to prop up intra-group funds and is a beneficial vehicle providing a less costly way of financing. The empirical results of the research indicate the existence of propping in the Turkish business groups and bring a debt and dividends (debt service hypothesis) related explanation for the propping phenomenon in the pyramidal business groups. Accordingly, the key findings indicate that firms within the business group transfer funds to each other via debt and dividends channels in order to reduce financial distress. Hence, business groups in Turkey use pyramidal ownership as a financing vehicle to increase internal capital market funds and a substitute for incomplete financial markets. Propping provides an implicit insurance against bankruptcy risk
An Investigation of Socially Advantaged and Disadvantaged Turkish Mothers' Views About Training on Preventing Children From Sexual Abuse
WOS: 000400864500004PubMed ID: 28471340This study aims to investigate the views of socially advantaged (N=8) and disadvantaged mothers (N=8) whose children are aged between 48 and 66months old about the issue of sexual abuse before and after the training provided to them. The views of mothers in both groups were investigated before and after the 5-week experience-based training about my body belongs to me, knowing and expressing feelings, good and bad touch, good and bad secrets, knowing how to say no, and help resources. The data were analyzed using content analysis methods. The study showed that the mothers have inaccurate or insufficient information and approaches about preventing sexual abuse. However, short-term training provided to the mothers changed their views, and the mothers in the disadvantaged group gained more awareness. The mothers in both groups stated that sexual abuse prevention trainings should be disseminated in preschool institutions
My Life Has Become More Absurd Than My Play: Mi Minor and the Crackdown on Artistic Freedom in Turkey
Mi Minor, written by Turkish author Meltem Arkan and directed by Turkish actor and director Memet Ali Alabora, deals with rising authoritarianism in the age of social media. The play envisaged both the fate of its artists, who were persecuted for ostensibly rehearsing the Gezi uprising through the play, and also the future of Turkey's performing arts scene, currently struggling under an authoritarian regime
Synthesis, characterization and metal ion sensing properties of novel pyridone derivatives phthalocyanines
#nofulltext# --- Ağar, Meltem (Arel Author), Altındal, Ahmet (Arel Author)The design of novel substituted phthalocyanines closely follows the requirement of their planned applications. In this study, synthesize of novel pyridone derivatives metal-free and symmetrical cobalt(II) phthalocyanines was carried out to improve brightness. For this purpose; starting with 4-nitrophthalonitrile and 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-3-nitro-2-pyridone, 4-(6-methyl-3-nitro-2-oxo1,2- dihydropyridin-4-yloxy) phthalonitrile was prepared. Then 2(3), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tetrakis[6-methyl- 3-nitro-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-4-yloxy] metal-free phthalocyaninato and 2(3), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24)-tetrakis[6-methyl-3-nitro-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-4-yloxy] phthalocyaninato Co(II) were synthesized by using 4-(6-methyl-3-nitro-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridin-4-yloxy) phthalonitrile, lithium metal and cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate in amyl alcohol, respectively. The sensing behavior of the film of derivatives metal-free and symmetrical cobalt(II) phthalocyanines for the online detection of heavy metal ions in water samples was investigated by utilizing an AT-cut quartz crystal resonator. It was observed that the adsorption of the analytes on the coating surface cause a reversible negative frequency shift of the resonator. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) functionalized with phthalocyanine, derivatives metal-free and symmetrical cobalt(II) phthalocyanines, are demonstrated to be sensors for the detection of heavy metal ions like Cd2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Cr2+ and Co2+. Thus, QCM based sensor arrays are considered a promising platform for the direct analysis of aqueous samples
