Inelastic neutron and resonant elastic x-ray scattering studies of honeycomb quantum magnets
This thesis presents results from inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the magnetically ordered phases of the stacked honeycomb quantum magnets CoTiO3 and FeTiO3. The two materials are isostructural with ferromagnetic alignment within the honeycomb layers, and antiferromagnetic alignment between neighbouring honeycomb layers. In CoTiO3, the magnetic moments have an easy-plane anisotropy and high resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of a finite energy gap. Such a gap implies the existence of bond-dependent anisotropic couplings and a quantum order-by-disorder mechanism. Furthermore, the inelastic scattering measurements reveal a winding of the scattering intensity at linear crossing points in the vicinity of the corners of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. On the other hand, the magnetic moments of FeTiO3 possess an easy-axis anisotropy with doubly degenerate magnetic modes. This degeneracy is lifted under the application of an external magnetic field, and if this magnetic field exceeds a critical value of 8 T the magnetic structure transitions from an antiferromagnetic phase to a spin-polarised phase. The magnon dispersions in FeTiO3 have a small avoided crossing at the corners of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, and such a gap arises due to the presence of an antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction. Nonetheless, the azimuthal dependence of the inelastic neutron scattering intensity around these avoided crossing points was found to have a similar profile to that observed in CoTiO3. This periodicity appears to be a universal feature of magnetic excitations supported by the honeycomb lattice and was found in both low energy magnons and higher energy spin-orbit excitons in CoTiO3, and in the magnon excitations of FeTiO3 in both the antiferromagnetic and spin-polarised magnetic phases. Finally, results of elastic x-ray scattering experiments measuring the structural and magnetic properties of crystalline samples of lithium substituted Na2IrO3 are presented. Such systems have previously been found to exhibit anisotropic Kitaev exchange between the Ir4+ moments, which may stabilise exotic magnetic phases. Studies of the structural order of these samples reveal stacking faults and rotational twins. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering studies allow the magnetic structure of a 5% Li-substituted sample of Na2IrO3 to be determined as a zigzag ordered magnetic state, which implies the presence of both isotropic Heisenberg and anisotropic Kitaev exchange interactions

A role for SUMO modification in transcriptional repression and activation
Since the discovery of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-related modifier) family of proteins just over a decade ago, a plethora of substrates have been uncovered including many regulators of transcription. Conjugation of SUMO to target proteins has generally been considered as a repressive modification. However, there are now a growing number of examples where SUMOylation has been shown to activate transcription. Here, we discuss whether there is something intrinsically repressive about SUMOylation, or if the outcome of this modification in the context of transcription will prove to be largely substrate-dependent. We highlight some of the technical challenges that will be faced by attempting to answer this question
This thesis examines a guitar teacher’s professional growth and development of one’s own work. Moreover, the thesis discusses the development of a guitar teacher’s identity, maintenance of work motivation, formation of expertise and response to professional challenges.
For the thesis, the author interviewed three experienced guitar teachers about their professional identity, work motivation, expertise and what they consider as challenges in instrumental teacher’s work. According to the guitar teachers, their professional identity consists of a musician’s and a teacher’s identity. Furthermore, the teachers thought that the formation of a good student-teacher relationship and seeing the students’ progress in their studies is an important factor in maintaining high work motivation. Expertise seemed to have an effect on how quickly the guitar teachers can find solutions in teaching situations. The biggest challenge seemed to be a kind of crossing over genre boundaries in instrumental teaching.
The thesis discloses the possibilites and challenges of guitar teaching. In addition, it helps instrumental teachers and students studying to be instrumental teachers to reflect on their own actions. The purpose of this thesis is also to help instrumental teachers to find a balance between musicianship and teacher identity
Graphic Design Business : Essentials to Focus Upon When Starting a One-Person Graphic Design Business
The purpose of this thesis is to seek to answer the question ‘What are the key elements to focus upon and keep in mind when starting a one-person graphic design business?’ The chosen method of research is a literature review combined with a case study implemented by the author, as a graphic designer seeking to successfully start their own design business.
The literature review identified nine main headings, to answer the thesis question. The headings were as follows: company brand, legal papers and accountant, working environment, discipline and working habits, professionalism, communication, pricing, continual learning and networking, and personal side project.
The ensuing case study, sought to implement these aspects that were identified in the literature review. The elements identified were found applicable and useful in the case study of starting and running a one-person graphic design business.
It was concluded, that the nine headings resulting from the literature review – although others could be identified – serve as a helpful and important guide to focus upon when starting and running a successful one-person graphic design business
Open data barometer global report
Highlights the lack of open and accessible data on the performance of key public services. If the political and social impacts of open data are to be realised, work to increase the supply of datasets from right across government will be needed, alongside sustained investment in capacity building, training and support for effective data use.
Introduction
The core idea behind Open Government Data (OGD) is a simple one: public data should be a shared resource. Making data open is valuable not only for the government departments that collect and release the data, but also for citizens, entrepreneurs and other parts of the public sector.
The implementation of OGD takes dedicated and sustained policy attention. Affecting widespread impact through the release of OGD relies not only upon the supply of high-quality data, but also upon the capacity of users to work with the data, and the ability of government to engage proactively with those users.
In our complex world, access to OGD has the power to secure enhanced government accountability, empower coordinated action to improve public services and civil society, and inspire new business ideas. Yet far too often, access to data, along with the skills to understand and make use of it, are distributed unequally, and would-be users frequently encounter unnecessary technical and legal restrictions that prevent data re-use. Calls for a “Data Revolution” — led by the United Nations — have placed renewed attention on ensuring the collection and management of high-quality data around the world through strengthened statistical capacity, and are driving a focus on the use of new “big data” resources in policy making. Against this backdrop, questions concerning who has access to data, and whether citizens have the capability and freedoms to create, access, and analyse data about their own communities and concerns, become ever more important for securing a fair balance of power in our societies
Kossuth Lajos megjelenítése karikatúrákon a kiegyezést követő években (1867–1875)
This paper aims to present a comparative analysis of caricatures published in Hungarian comic papers (Az Üstökös, Borsszem Jankó, Bolond Miska, Ludas Matyi) in the first years after the Austro–Hungarian compromise. The author intends to demonstrate the ways of the depiction of a national hero, Lajos Kossuth. The comic papers can be connected to political parties evaluating the rule of Kossuth differently, therefore Kossuth’s representation depended on the political attitude of the comic paper. The results of the examination reveal the themes which were connected with Kossuth (independence vs. compromise, public opinion and Kossuth, Kossuth as God, Kossuth and the Hungarian left whinged politicians, the emigrant Kossuth) and some elements of the mythicized Kossuth figure (e.g. „Kossuth hat”)
