Breaking the news: a case study on nineteenth century journalism and Selim Faris

    No full text
The nineteenth-century news market offered benefits beyond sales incomes to opportunists functioning in local and global news markets. The owners of newspapers could come to terms with governments to publish in their favour. They could exploit political tensions among the Great Powers to manipulate governments into making agreements with them. They also utilized their influence upon groups of people to extract money from governments. The manipulation of news for personal gain is here investigated through the case of Selim Faris, journalist, son of author Ahmad Faris, manager of Al-Jawaib (1870-1884), owner of Hurriyet (1894-1897) and Khilafat-Hilafet, and author of The Decline of English Prestige in the East

Cost management-based BIM: skills, implementation and teaching map

It is widely known that the emergence of Building Information Modelling (BIM) is significantly affecting the cost management process and the role of quantity surveying professionals in the construction industry. The utilization of BIM is moving towards transforming how information is managed by and for quantity surveying professionals, especially due to the transition from 2D drawings. This chapter starts with describing the conventional cost management processes and highlighting the shortcomings of using it. Subsequently, the role of BIM to tackle those challenges through providing an autoamted quantification feature and integarting the cost estimation into the desisgn process. The integration of 4D and 5D BIM is discussed in this chapter to provide a siginfcant understanding how BIM enahanced the process of develop a budget of construction projects. This chapter also proposes an effective process to teach 5D BIM at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The process is expected to enable a deep learning for students to absorb the required knowledge before starting their careers in the construction industry

AbstractThis research aims at describing the characters in the novel Cinta 3 Benua by Faris BQ and Astrid Tito, describe how the author describes the character to the character, and to know the implementation of the character in the learning process of Bahasa Indonesia at senior high school / MA. The research method used descriptive method with a qualitative form of research. The approach used structural approach. The source of this research data is the novel Cinta 3 Benua by Faris BQ and Astrid Tito. The techniques and data collection tools used in this research are the study of documenters and researchers themselves. Data validity testing techniques used persistence of observation, triangulation, and adequacy of references. The results of this research on character characters contained in the novel Cinta 3 Benua by Faris BQ and Astrid Tito on data analysis are done by looking at the characters owned by the main characters and auxiliary characters who play an active role in the novel, as well as the way the author describes the character to the character analytically or directly through the technique of using the character's name, character appearance technique, and the author's speech technique. Dramatically or indirectly, namely through the taknik of the character, the technique of the character's deeds, the technique of the reaction of the character, and the rekasi technique of other characters. The implementation of the characters contained in the novel for Indonesian language learning is seen from aspects of curriculum, learning objectives, selection of teaching materials, and level of readability worthy of being used as learning materials for ninth grade students of Senior High School / MA.Keyword: Character, Novel, The character

Revolutionising AEC financial system within project delivery stages: a permissioned blockchain digitalised framework

    No full text
Extant literature accentuates the potential of blockchain in the Architectural, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, and its prospective to be integrated into the construction projects to automate financial transactions; for better transparency, security, and controlling. Existing research highlights that permissioned blockchain can work as a platform to create a business network among project participants, due to its features being consistent with the construction industry nature. This paper introduces a framework to integrate permissioned blockchain, particularly Hyperledger fabric, into the construction delivery stages. The proposed framework includes specific steps, demonstrating the requirements to build a network within the pre-construction, construction, and closeout stages. Furthermore, the proposed framework reveals the flow of financial transactions throughout the proposed financial system. Due to the Building Information Modelling/Management (BIM) capabilities and cost planning, the proposed framework shows how the integration between blockchain and BIM processes can be achieved. Therefore, the framework identifies the required data from 4D/5D BIM to be entered into the blockchain financial system. A systematic literature review was used to highlight the advantages of using blockchain in the construction industry, as well as, identifying the appropriate blockchain platform. The framework can be used by industry practitioners to identify the architecture of smart contracts (chaincode) in the construction industry, such as how endorsement and validation policies can be articulated. The outcome of this paper will be used to develop a proof of concept prototype to test and validate the applicability of the proposed conceptual framework through its application to a real case study

Article by Neil Faris (Solicitor and a former Commissioner at the Northern Ireland Law Commission) reflecting on the nature of law reform as carried out by law commissions. This is in the context of the author’s experience in the Northern Ireland Law Commission. The paper assesses the importance of independence in any law reform body and the particular impact which law commissioners may bring to the law reform process. The paper looks at the history of law reform in Northern Ireland leading to the establishment of the Commission with a brief overview of the work of the Commission. The conclusion is that there is a role for effective law reform driven by commissioner led independent law commissions. The author makes a strong case for the need for independent law commissions to promote high quality law reform. His article gives an idea about how law reform works in practice with law commissions providing one route for reforming the law

Platform Based Design and Immersive Technologies for Manufacturing and Assembly in Offsite Construction:Applying Extended Reality and Game Applications to PDfMA

    No full text
This book explores the applications of virtual reality technologies in building design and offsite construction. Its focus is on how small and medium-sized architectural and construction practices with limited budgets and time can implement innovation through visualisation creation. Virtual reality technologies, known as empathy machines, offer a productive interaction process for clients and professionals. Gaming and simulation have already proven their efficacy in solving problems in science and business. However, the next challenge is designing data-rich virtual environments that can enhance clients' spatial understanding, simplify architect-client communications, provide customisation options, consolidate quantification, and export data directly to manufacturers' software, minimizing fragmentation across the entire building information management (BIM) lifecycle. With this book, architects and construction professionals can learn how to leverage virtual reality technologies to improve their work processes and enhance client engagement. Whether you're new to virtual reality or an experienced practitioner, this book provides valuable insights and practical tips to help you harness the power of this exciting technology.</p
