Conclusions 2023
The sharp downsizing of Russia caused by the war is not
likely to interrupt the consolidation of a scenario defined by
Richard Sakwa in this volume as “a highly uneven multipolarity
accompanied by a broader ideological, even civilisational,
contest between the political West and the nascent political
East”. This is because the call for multipolarity comes from
an increasingly large and powerful group of countries that
demands more representation and sees their interests damaged
by a world order configuration still largely prey to traditional
Western global hegemony. Hence, as observed by Zachary
Paikin in this volume, perhaps 2022 will be remembered as “the
year when multipolarity definitively became a reality” – even in
the event of a Russian military defeat
Ferreira, Ferrari: ficções do exílio
Abstract : This is a reading of both Ferreira Gullar and León Ferrari s exiles, during the last military dictatorships that took account of the Southern Cone, including Brazil and Argentina. Between 1971 and 1977, Gullar went through Moscow, Santiago, Lima and Buenos Aires, and other cities, while Ferrari settled with his family in São Paulo from late 1976 until 1984, and thereafter still divided for a few years his stay between São Paulo and Buenos Aires. Some of his most notable works were carried out in exile, so that the configuration of an exilic landscape or scene becomes inseparable from experiments conducted with language. In short, although marked by military thanatopolitics and the nomos of global capital manager, it is possible to say that exile is not given in advance and not always remains the same, whether as damage or as a gift; it is only with the language  the image, the sensible  that an exilic experience, always singular and radically contemporary, can find its exposure surface, that is, its difference. While they are profoundly dissimilar, Ferreira Gullar and León Ferrari s exiles show their affinities, particularly at times when their experiences play a common point: the space  a topos  a-topic of the impropriety, potency, of in-operativity that, together with language, resists untamable against all crystallization attempts on the idiom, people, power, and nation. Foucault, Saer, Coccia and other authors frank a thought of fiction as a contingency construction able to denature the uses of speech and the teleology that constantly haunts literature, arts, and history. In a way, fiction repeats, exposes and therefore differs fables, while exposes and differs itself. It is this in-operative operation, this affirmative work of negativity that suspends the immunitary machinery of Christian Western civilization
Judicial assistant in Italy: a comparative reflection
In the international panorama, there is growing acknowledgment of the necessity for judges to receive support from staff members in executing their many responsibilities and activities. Although judicial assistants exhibit distinct characteristics, there are discernible and identifiable commonalities among the diverse models proposed worldwide. This investigation initiates with an examination of the Italian judicial assistant, which draws inspiration from international paradigms. Then it proceeds to scrutinize the primary challenges associated with this role, in light of the experiences within Italian courts. Subsequently, through a comparative analysis, the Italian judicial assistant's reality is juxtaposed with the challenges encountered in international systems, aiming to propose and formulate remedies to address the current deficiencies within the Italian system
Characterization of mouse models to study the pathogenesis of celiac disease and the role played by the dysregulation of the intestinal microbiota
Celiac disease (CD) is a permanent intolerance to dietary protein, gluten, from wheat rye and barley. It occurs in about 1% worldwide population, in genetically predisposed individuals bearing human leukocyte antigen DQ2/DQ8. Although gut epithelial cell stress and the innate immune activation are responsible for the breaking oral tolerance to gliadin, the gluten component, the exact mechanisms through which gliadin can stimulate CD onset are still unclear. Here I show how is important to identify in vivo preclinical models of CD to study its pathogenesis, at molecular level. The increasing prevalence of positive serological marker of CD in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) affected patients let to the hypothesis of a link between the two disorders. Results from my studies indicate that CFTR is potentially involved in the pathogenesis of CD, with gliadin peptides inhibiting CFTR activity and expression. Today, the only treatment for CD is a long-term gluten-free diet. Several evidences show that an altered composition of the intestinal microbiota could play a key role in the pathogenesis of CD, through the modulation of intestinal permeability and the regulation of the immune system. Indeed, although further studies are still required to unveil the molecular mechanisms, results reported in the present work clearly indicate that rebalancing the gut microbiota composition by probiotics administration might represent a new strategy to treat CD affected patients
The Feminist Discourse. History and Critique of Modern Political Canon
Feminist thought is a constitutive part of political thought and its history. It is both a method of inquiry, a voice and a stance on the world, a claim of women’s political centrality, and a paradoxical critique of modern political and philosophical thought. As unexpected objection, feminist discourse constantly stretches the borders of the political canon and produces critical political theory, imposing the redefinition of the categories used to interpret the present and the past. Going through six centuries of history, from the reappropriation of tradition in XV century to the tension with neoliberalism in XX century, protofeminist and feminist discourse constitutes in time a constant interruption of the monologue of Western patriarchal civilization, showing its centrality in the production, crisis and redefinition of political and social order. Thus, feminist discourse is an essential source of the history of political thought
War and decarbonisation: EU-Russia energy relations in crisis
The EU’s introduction of the European Green Deal and adoption of a far-reaching decarbonisation agenda in 2019-2021 cast serious doubts on the future of EU-Russia trade in fossil fuels. Russia’s recent military attack against Ukraine and the subsequent Western reaction have accelerated the EU’s attempts to disentangle itself from dependence on Russian energy supplies. The Union’s ongoing confrontation with Russia currently makes prospects for a ‘greener’ type of energy cooperation implausible. At the same time, Russia remains the fifth largest CO2 emitter (after China, the US, the EU and India) and a central actor in terms of ‘green’ resources - i.e. forests, critical minerals for the energy transition; hence its involvement in efforts to fight climate change will be important to attain global climate goals. This chapter assesses the implications of the European Green Deal and recent EU plans to reduce imports from Russia for the EU-Russia energy relationship. Subsequently, it examines potential options for interaction in the energy transition, which could help pursue the global climate agenda when the political situation will allow for it
The Feminine Ferment
This chapter discusses the structure of patriarchy and the relations established by it in Marx's thought. It starts from the hypothesis that while patriarchalism constitutes a form of domination and a mode of production in the pre-capitalist era, it does not die out, but is transformed into modern patriarchy, i.e., the hidden content of capitalist production and ideology.
It develops along two axes that are not always separable from each other: on the one hand, the political problem of patriarchy underlying global capital; on the other hand, the scientific problem, i.e., the unresolved questions that Marx explores by calling into question common sense, especially historical-anthropological common sense, to reveal patriarchy as a battleground and not as an eternal and universal power structure
