A semigroup approach to Finsler geometry: Bakry-Ledoux\u27s isoperimetric inequality

    Get PDF
We develop the celebrated semigroup approach à la Bakry et al on Finsler manifolds, where natural Laplacian and heat semigroup are nonlinear, based on the Bochner-Weitzenböck formula established by Sturm and the author. We show the L1L^1-gradient estimate on Finsler manifolds (under some additional assumptions in the noncompact case), which is equivalent to a lower weighted Ricci curvature bound and the improved Bochner inequality. As a geometric application, we prove Bakry-Ledoux\u27s Gaussian isoperimetric inequality, again under some additional assumptions in the noncompact case. This extends Cavalletti-Mondino\u27s inequality on reversible Finsler manifolds to non-reversible metrics, and improves the author\u27s previous estimate, both based on the localization (also called needle decomposition) method.32 pages; v3: minor revisions; to appear in Comm.

A Bakry-\'Emery criterion for weighted contractivity and L2L^2-Hardy inequalities

    Get PDF
We show a symmetric Markov diffusion semigroup satisfies a weighted contractivity condition if and only if a L2L^2-Hardy inequality holds, and we give a Bakry-\'Emery type criterion for the former. We then give some applications.Comment: 23 pages, changed title, some changes made according to referee recommendations, to appear in Commun. Contemp. Mat

Quartic graphs which are Bakry-Émery curvature sharp

    Get PDF
We give a classification of all connected quartic graphs which are (infinity) curvature sharp in all vertices with respect to Bakry-Émery curvature. The result is based on a computer classification by F. Gurr and L. Watson May and a combinatorial case by case investigation

Upper bounds on the first eigenvalue for a diffusion operator via Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature

AbstractLet L=Δ−∇φ⋅∇ be a symmetric diffusion operator with an invariant measure dμ=e−φdx on a complete Riemannian manifold. In this paper we give an upper bound estimate on the first eigenvalue of the diffusion operator L on the complete manifold with the m-dimensional Bakry–Émery Ricci curvature satisfying Ricm,n(L)⩾−(n−1), and therefore generalize a Cheng's result on the Laplacian (S.-Y. Cheng (1975) [8]) to the case of the diffusion operator

Gradient Estimate and Liouville Property of L-pseudoharmonic Functions on a Complete Pseudohermitian Manifold with Bakry-Emery Pseudohermitian Ricci Curvature

In this paper, we modify Yau''s method to discuss a gradient estimate of a nonnegative L-pseudoharmonic function on a oriented, complete, pseudohermitian manifold which satisfies Witten-sub-Laplacian comparison property. Since the manifold we considered in this paper is weighted manifold, the curvature we consider is not only Ricci curvature but Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature Ric_m,n (L). At the end of this paper, we can get that when the form 2Ric_m,n (L) - Tor(L) is bounded below, any gradient estimate of a nonnegative L-pseudoharmonic function is bounded. Moreover, we can then deduce Liouville property on such manifold with curvature satisfies 2Ric_m,n (L) > Tor(L)

Bakry–Émery curvature-dimension condition and Riemannian Ricci curvature bounds

The aim of the present paper is to bridge the gap between the Bakry-Émery and the Lott-Sturm-Villani approaches to provide synthetic and abstract notions of lower Ricci curvature bounds. We start from a strongly local Dirichlet form E admitting a Carré du champ in a Polish measure space (X,m) and a canonical distance d that induces the original topology of X. We first characterize the distinguished class of Riemannian Energy measure spaces, where the Dirichlet form E coincides with the Cheeger energy induced by d and where every function f whose energy measure with bounded density admits a continuous representative. In such a class we show that if E satisfies a suitable weak form of the Bakry-Émery curvature dimension condition BE(K,\infty) then the metric measure space (X,d,m) satisfies the Riemannian Ricci curvature bound RCD(K,\infty), thus showing the equivalence of the two notions. Two applications are then proved: the tensorization property for Riemannian Energy spaces satisfying the Bakry-Émery condition BE(K,N) (and thus the corresponding one for RCD(K,\infty) spaces without assuming nonbranching) and the stability of BE(K,N) with respect to Sturm-Gromov-Hausdorff convergence
