Hemingway and Bullshit
This paper uses Harry Frankfurt\u27s definition of bullshit as a lens to re-examine Ernest Hemingway\u27s aesthetic of factual details and omission. Frankfurt argues that bullshit consists of speech made with indifference to its veracity, and one who makes a habit of bullshitting may lose touch with reality. By studying three works across the author\u27s career, Big Two-Hearted River, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, and The Old Man and the Sea, one sees that Hemingway\u27s prose style evolves and eventually contradicts his artistic statements. Given the fact that he promotes his aesthetic while discarding it, his theory becomes bullshit. Because normative critical interpretation of the author rests largely on his aesthetic theory, it too is inaccurate. Though Hemingway misrepresents how he writes, the success of his work regardless of aesthetics demonstrates that his writing is more complex than many think and deserves a more thorough re-evaluation
TURAN NUMBERS FOR FORESTS OF PATHS IN HYPERGRAPHS
abstract: The Turán number of an r-uniform hypergraph H is the maximum number of edges in any r-graph on n vertices which does not contain H as a subgraph. Let P[(r) over l] denote the family of r-uniform loose paths on l edges, F(k,l) denote the family of hypergraphs consisting of k disjoint paths from P[(r) over l], and L[(r) over l] denote an r-uniform linear path on l edges. We determine precisely ex[subscript r](n; F(k,l)) and ex[subscript r](n; . L[(r) over l]), as well as the Turán numbers for forests of paths of differing lengths (whether these paths are loose or linear) when n is appropriately large dependent on k,l,r for r ≥ 3. Our results build on recent results of Füredi, Jiang, and Seiver, who determined the extremal numbers for individual paths, and provide more hypergraphs whose Turán numbers are exactly determined
The impact of attachment anxiety on susceptibility to false memories
Previous research shows that people's attachment styles predict memory functioning. For example, people with relatively insecure attachment styles tend to forget relationship-relevant information, as well as negatively bias their emotional evaluations of interpersonal experiences over time. An emerging body of research has also begun to suggest that attachment anxiety in particular relates to people's propensity to experience false memories. The present dissertation describes two randomized experiments which attempted to examine a causal link between attachment anxiety and false memories. Furthermore, the present studies attempted to isolate whether attachment anxiety causes false memories during memory maintenance or retrieval processes.
Participants were primed with either (1) high attachment anxiety, (2) low attachment anxiety, or (3) were not primed prior to retrieval (Study 1) or during maintenance (Study 2). The experimental primes had no main effects on false memories in either study. This may indicate that attachment anxiety does not cause false memories during maintenance or reconstruction. However, future research should explore whether attachment anxiety might cause false memories during encoding processes. Alternatively, it may be the case that the priming paradigms used failed to appropriately manipulate participants' attachment security, which would render the present findings ambiguous. Current procedures for priming attachment security and future directions for studying links between attachment anxiety and false memories are discussed.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2018-05-01The student, Nathan Hudson, accepted the attached license on 2016-02-01 at 08:56.The student, Nathan Hudson, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2016-02-01 at 09:04.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2016-02-02 at 10:58.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #9057 on 2016-07-07 at 14:16:01Made available in DSpace on 2016-07-07T21:04:21Z (GMT). Big Data, Big Libraries, Big Problems?: the 2014 LibTech Anti-talk?
The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Man’s confidence undeterred, the endgame of the modern scientific and technological mindset, or MSTM, seems to be increasingly coming into view with the rise of “information technology” in general and “Big data” in particular. Along with those who wield them, these can be seen as functioning together as a “mechanical muse” of sorts – surprisingly alluring – and, like a physical automaton can serve as a symbol – a microcosm – of what the MSTM sees (at the very least in practice) as the cosmic machine, our “final frontier”. And yet, individuals who unreflectively participate in these things – giving themselves over to them and seeking the powers afforded by the technology apart from technology’s rightful purposes – in fact yield to the same pragmatism and reductionism those wielding them are captive to. Thus, they ultimately nullify themselves philosophically, politically, and economically – their value increasingly being only the data concerning their persons, and its perceived usefulness. Likewise libraries, the time-honored place of, and symbol for, the intellectual flowering of the individual, will, insofar as they spurn the classical liberal arts (with the idea that things are intrinsically good, and in the case of humans, special as well) in favor of the alluring embrace of MSTM-driven “information technology” and Big data - unwittingly contribute to their irrelevance and demise as they find themselves increasingly less needed, valued, wanted. Likewise for the liberal arts as a whole, and in fact history itself, if the acid of a “science” untethered from what is, in fact, good (intrinsically), continues to gain strengt

Yet, few experimental investigations have examined effects of GCDs on plant community structure across multiple ecosystem types, and those that do exist present conflicting patterns. In an unprecedented global synthesis of over 100 experiments that manipulated factors linked to GCDs, we show that herbaceous plant community responses depend on experimental manipulation length and number of factors manipulated. We found that plant communities are fairly resistant to experimentally manipulated GCDs in the short term (<10 y). In contrast, long-term (≥10 y) experiments show increasing community divergence of treatments from control conditions. Surprisingly, these community responses occurred with similar frequency across the GCD types manipulated in our database. However, community responses were more common when 3 or more GCDs were simultaneously manipulated, suggesting the emergence of additive or synergistic effects of multiple drivers, particularly over long time periods. In half of the cases, GCD manipulations caused a difference in community composition without a corresponding species richness difference, indicating that species reordering or replacement is an important mechanism of community responses to GCDs and should be given greater consideration when examining consequences of GCDs for the biodiversity.ecosystem function relationship. Human activities are currently driving unparalleled global changes worldwide. Our analyses provide the most comprehensive evidence to date that these human activities may have widespread impacts on plant community composition globally, which will increase in frequency over time and be greater in areas where communities face multiple GCDs simultaneously.NSF Grants EF-0553768 and DEB#1545288 through the LTER Network Communications Office and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, University of California, Santa Barbara. RNA-Seq analysis reveals potential regulators of programmed cell death and leaf remodelling in lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis)
Background: The lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis) is an aquatic monocot that develops leaves with uniquely formed perforations through the use of a developmentally regulated process called programmed cell death (PCD). The process of perforation formation in lace plant leaves is subdivided into several developmental stages: pre-perforation, window, perforation formation, perforation expansion and mature. The first three emerging "imperforate leaves" do not form perforations, while all subsequent leaves form perforations via developmentally regulated PCD. PCD is active in cells called "PCD cells" that do not retain the antioxidant anthocyanin in spaces called areoles framed by the leaf veins of window stage leaves. Cells near the veins called "NPCD cells" retain a red pigmentation from anthocyanin and do not undergo PCD. While the cellular changes that occur during PCD are well studied, the gene expression patterns underlying these changes and driving PCD during leaf morphogenesis are mostly unknown. We sought to characterize differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that mediate lace plant leaf remodelling and PCD. This was achieved performing gene expression analysis using transcriptomics and comparing DEGs among different stages of leaf development, and between NPCD and PCD cells isolated by laser capture microdissection. Results: Transcriptomes were sequenced from imperforate, pre-perforation, window, and mature leaf stages, as well as PCD and NPCD cells isolated from window stage leaves. Differential expression analysis of the data revealed distinct gene expression profiles: pre-perforation and window stage leaves were characterized by higher expression of genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis, plant proteases, expansins, and autophagy-related genes. Mature and imperforate leaves upregulated genes associated with chlorophyll development, photosynthesis, and negative regulators of PCD. PCD cells were found to have a higher expression of genes involved with ethylene biosynthesis, brassinosteroid biosynthesis, and hydrolase activity whereas NPCD cells possessed higher expression of auxin transport, auxin signalling, aspartyl proteases, cysteine protease, Bag5, and anthocyanin biosynthesis enzymes. Conclusions: RNA sequencing was used to generate a de novo transcriptome for A. madagascariensis leaves and revealed numerous DEGs potentially involved in PCD and leaf remodelling. The data generated from this investigation will be useful for future experiments on lace plant leaf development and PCD in plantaNatural Science and Engineering Research Council of CanadaDalhousie Universit

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!
Take care,
Ken Pon

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control
Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/)
Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the
message being shared. Enjoy! 5

A Message ■
from ou„r awth^lOtiC DiPOCtO
It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

academic Awards
The WR Myers Academic Awards Night would not be possible without the many and generous contributions from our local Taber
businesses and families. Our community has donated 16 885 this year!
Unfortunately, we could not celebrate the academic successes of our students with our annual evening event. But we still took the time
acknowledge these amazing and talented students on their academic accomplishments! We hope to return to our evening event next
year!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.
Way to go Sayge!!
Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year
so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind
Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to
go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021
in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Taber Thrashers get a season after all! With vaccinate numbers up and COVID cases dropping substantially
after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching
playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in
^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and
Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. But considering
^ey were up against teams with many more years experience, the Thrashers had a phenomenal season!

Reason: Author requested U of Illinois access only (OA after 2yrs) in Vireo ETD systemAuthor requested U of Illinois access only (OA after 2yrs) in Vireo ETD systemU of I OnlyChemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a process used especially in the microelectronics industry to deposit films onto surfaces by means of chemical reactions of a volatile precursors. Its principal advantage over physical vapor deposition and atomic layer deposition techniques is that it can coat hidden and high aspect-ratio features both quickly and conformally. Some of the best- studied metal-containing precursors for CVD are metal complexes of deprotonated β-diketones such as acetylacetone (Hacac = CH3C(=O)CH2C(=O)CH3). Complexes of acac and other β- diketonates are known for almost every metal in the periodic table. When used as CVD precursors, these compounds primarily afford films of metal oxides, but require relatively high decomposition temperatures (>250 °C), and – when used as single source precursors – tend to deposit films contaminated with carbon.
In contrast, β-dicarbonylates (the parent class of β-diketonates) with one or more aldehyde groups are essentially unstudied as ligands for metal centers. For the anion of malondialdehyde (Hmda = HC(=O)CH2C(=O)H)), only complexes of six d- and f-block elements are known – Cr(mda)3, Pd(mda)2, PtMe3(mda), and two complexes each of yttrium, europium, and terbium; of these, only Cr(mda)3 had been fully characterized. One report of Pd(mda)2 noted its high volatility and that it deposited metallic films, apparently Pd0, at 125 °C; in contrast, the β-diketonate Pd(acac)2 undergoes thermolysis only at much higher temperatures of ca. 250 °C. This difference, which is consistent with the known ability of aldehydes to reduce late transition metals to zero- valent metals, indicates that complexes of mda and related aldehyde-containing β-dicarbonylate ligands may serve as useful CVD precursors.
Many β-diketones are easy to handle and commercially available, but malondialdehyde is unstable and self-reactive; consequently it is usually prepared from its acetal and handled as its sodium salt. After the preparation of Na(mda) was optimized, we used this salt to prepare the new compound Cu(mda)2. Thermolytic studies revealed that Cu(mda)2 quantitatively decomposes by an acid-base pathway enabled by the presence of the aldehyde group, which explains the lower decomposition temperatures seen for Pd(mda)2. Similar acid-base pathways are a minor (< 10%) pathway for the thermolysis of metal β-diketonates, for which radical and redox pathways predominate. The EPR parameters for Cu(mda)2, which are essentially identical to those of Cu(acac)2, contradict an established correlation between ligand pKa and g-values. This aberration is due to the anomalously high acidity of H(mda); H- and CH3-groups have similar inductive properties, but H(mda) is 4.5 pKa units more acidic than H(acac). We attribute this behavior to the steric preorganization of β-diketones into a U-shape, which enables formation an intramolecular hydrogen bond that quenches its acidity. In contrast, H(mda) adopts an open-chain conformation in which the OH group is more acidic because it is not stabilized by internal hydrogen bonding.
The binary complexes M(mda)2 of Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni are insoluble, involatile solids, and could not be isolated in pure form; in contrast, the corresponding β-diketonate analogues are soluble and volatile oligomers. Adducts of stoichiometry M(mda)2L2 (where M = Fe, Co, Ni and L = pyridine or 1⁄2 N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine) can be prepared and characterized, however. The tmed complexes are volatile and may be useful as CVD precursors. In the solid state, Mn(mda)2(tmed) adopts a structure in which one mda ligand per formula unit is non-chelating and instead assumes the open-chain structure seen in solution and for the sodium salts, but which is unprecedented in transition metal β-dicarbonylates. The insolubility of the binary mda complexes is likely due to the presence of similar bridging mda units. Attempts to make Pt(mda)2 result instead in the formation of Pt metal.
The tris-chelate compounds M(mda)3 (where M = Al, V, Fe) were also prepared and characterized. Interestingly, the titanium analogue Ti(mda)3 can be observed by EPR spectroscopy at low temperatures but decomposes above -78 °C. Attempts to prepare Co(mda)3 instead afforded Co(mda)2. The thermal instability of the titanium(III), cobalt(III), and platinum(II) mda complexes suggests that the mda anion is unstable with respect to strong reductants and strong oxidants, so that M(mda)x complexes are isolable only if the metal center has no redox activity within a potential window ranging from about -0.009 V to 1.12 V vs. NHE. This limited redox stability is in contrast to the β-diketonates, which are stable toward a much wider range of redox potentials.
Modification of the mda structure by substitution of electron-withdrawing or -donating groups should shift the stability window. Consequently, ten substituted analogs of mda were synthesized, each of which contains at least one aldehyde or aldimine group. Because one possible decomposition pathway for Cu(mda)2 leads to formation of an unstabilized carbene, we also synthesized analogs of mda in which a 1,2-hydrogen migration would allow this energetic fragment to rearrange into more stable products. Some of these mda analogues have previously been reported but their coordination chemistry is essentially unexplored. Depending on the nature of the substituents, these ligands are best made by one of three different preparation methods; 1) acetal formation and hydrolysis, 2) Claisen condensation, or 3) trifluoroacylation of enol ethers followed by nucleophilic attack. Fluorinated compounds could be prepared only by method 3 even when appropriate precursors were available for other methods.
The copper(II) compounds of these mda analogues were prepared and characterized. Whereas most are bis(chelates) both in solution and in the solid state, the 2-Me-mda ligand exclusively exhibits the non-chelating binding mode, as seen in the crystal structure of Cu(2-Me- mda)2(tmed). The EPR spectra of the new complexes show modest agreement with the aforementioned pKa correlation. Preliminary investigations on the utility of Cu(1-CF3-2-Me- mda)2, the most promising of this class of compounds, as a CVD precursor have been carried out
