DESIGN TOOLS FOR OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGY

    No full text
The crisis caused by the COVID-19 has awakened the fear of forgetting the fight against Climate Change coming up with a number of initiatives demanding to accelerate the European Green Deal, as the best way out of the crisis. Offshore renewable energy sources, including offshore wind, wave power and tidal streams, might play a crucial role in meeting low-carbon energy scenarios, which is one of the six key principles of the Green Recovery, contributing at the same time to economic growth and job creation. However, continuous cost reduction is needed to achieve more efficient and competitive technologies in comparison to other energy sources. Design tools can help to accelerate cost reduction in early stages of technology development or deployment project planning. This article shows some examples of design tools developed within four European funded R&D projects: • DTOcean and DTOceanPlus provide advanced design tools for ocean energy systems innovation, development and deployment • LIFES50+ proves cost effective technology for floating substructures for 10MW wind turbines at water depths greater than 50 m • OPERA collects, analyses and shares open-sea operating data and experience to validate and de-risk several industrial innovations for wave energy The design tools presented in this article cover different stages of technology or project development: • Multi-physics numerical modelling tools for the design of floating offshore wind turbines • Decision-making tools during the planning phase of offshore wind or ocean energy farms • Structured innovation and stage gate tools for the evaluation of innovations for offshore renewables at early stages of development The reader will be able to find out references to useful open source tools and public documents produced by these projects.Peer reviewe

Francisco de Robles, Cervantes, and the Spanish Book Trade

That we remember Francisco de Robles is due in large part to the fact that he published most of the works of Cervantes, and thus it is due to the repute of that great author that Robles also enjoys some historical stature. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, however, Cervantes was but one of a number of more or less successful authors, while Robles was the most successful and powerful bookseller in Madrid, and probably in all of Spain. The relationship between Cervantes and the Robles family was a longstanding one that dated back at least to the 1580s, and it was a connection that was of far greater benefit to the writer than to Robles. Though Robles made money publishing Cervantes, especially the first part of Don Quixote, such income was essentially inconsequential when compared to his other sources of revenue. On the other hand, Cervantes, though he may have complained of how little he was paid for his works, could have had no better publisher. Much has been written about Cervantes, and what little has been set down about Robles has centered on his being the former\u27s publisher. Here, I intend first to concentrate on Robles\u27 place in the book trade and then to consider his relationship with Cervantes from that larger perspective

Antonio Robles Soler is one of the humorous prose writer of 27’s group less known, but he was the first one to realize parodys of both sentimental and adventures novels at that time. He published some of his novels in Biblioteca Nueva, in the colection of “Grandes Novelas Humorísticas”. His short storys appeared in the humorous reviews of twentys and thirtieths, for exemple: “Buen Humor y Gutiérrez”. His fantasy, his irony, his personal lyrical accent and his critical vision of the spanish life, are some of his characteristics. Robles includes also elements of absurd. His style is, on one hand, realistic, and, on the other hand, in the vanguard. As a whole, Robles is a revolutionary author

An Iterative Refining Approach to Design the Control of Wave Energy Converters with Numerical Modeling and Scaled HIL Testing

    No full text
The aim of this work is to show that a significant increase in the efficiency of a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) can be achieved already at an early design stage, through the choice of a turbine and control regulation, by means of an accurate Wave-to-Wire (W2W) modeling that couples the hydrodynamic response calibrated in a wave flume to a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test bench with sizes and rates not matching those of the system under development. Information on this procedure is relevant to save time, because the acquisition, the installation, and the setup of a test rig are not quick and easy. Moreover, power electronics and electric machines to emulate turbines and electric generators matching the real systems are not low-cost equipment. The use of HIL is important in the development of WECs also because it allows the carrying out of tests in a controlled environment, and this is again time- and money-saving if compared to tests done on a real system installed at the sea. Furthermore, W2W modeling can be applied to several Power Take-OFF (PTO) configurations to experiment with different control strategies. The method here proposed, concerning a specific HIL for testing power electronics and control laws for a specific WECs, may have a more general validit

A case study on Nicolas Robles, freshman student of De La Salle High School

Nicholas Robles was observed as being exceedingly quiet, retired, and with a sullen attitude in class. During prayers, his silence as exceptionally noticeable, with a continuous faraway look. He didn’t mix much with his peers and had very few friends at school. He refused to participate in any organized school activities. The teacher counselor deduced that something was bothering the student and that it was worthwhile investigating. It is the hope of the author and the Guidance Office to find out the causes of this behavior and to show needs for a better adjustment in the adolescent years of Nicholas Robles, before his present attitude brings him into serious trouble
