Salvage excavations of the Afyon archaeological museum, part 2 : the settlement of Karaoğlan Mevkii and the Early Bronze Age cemetery of Kaklık Mevkii
This article deals with the salvage excavations of the Afyon Archaeological Museum at Karaoğlan Mevkii and Kakhk Mevkii in the north of the province. Here the EB 2 and EB 3 material from the cemetery at Kakhk Mevkii is considered, as well as the finds from the EB 2 settlement at Karaoğlan Mevkii.
The settlement, which corresponds to the second half of the EB 2 period, demonstrates a single cultural continuum comprised of two —or possibly three — architectural subphases. It is encircled by an impressive fortification wall replete with towers and buttresses. The layout of the settlement, although only partially excavated, reflects a somewhat degenerate version of the Anatolisches Siedlungsschema revealed at Demircihüyük. The pottery displays the characteristics of (and better defines) the 'Afyon EB 2 pottery group', previously recognized only through surface survey.
The graves at Kakhk Mevkii were found in two clusters (in Area A and in Area B), dug into the early EB 1 settlement treated in Part 1 . The graves fall chronologically into three groups. The earliest graves are the cists and pithos burials found in Area B, roughly contemporary with the settlement at Karaoglan Mevkii. A second group, concentrated in Area A, consists of pseudo-chamber tombs and simple inhumations from the very beginning of the EB 3 period. The latest graves are simple inhumations from mid-EB 3 times. The material from this cemetery — particularly considering the analogies between the finds here and those from the Demircihüyük-Sanket and Karatas/Semayük cemeteries— represents a significant contribution to the EBA chronology of inland western Anatolia.Topbaş Ahmet, Efe Turan, İlaslı Ahmet. The development of the beak - spouted jug in inland North Western Anatolian Early Bronze Age
The aim of the thesis entitled as “The Development of the Beak-Spouted Jug in Inland
North Western Anatolian Early Bronze Age” is to determine the form types and development of the beak-spouted jug recovered in the excavations of settlements and cemeteries belonging to the timespam stretching from the Transitional Period into the EBA (ca 3300 BC.) up untill the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age in inland westeren Anatolia. Beak spouted jug is one of the most important pottery forms which is critical in determining the Transition into Early Bronze Age and establishing local chronologies. The form appeared during the Transitional Phase into the Early Bronze Age (EB IA) and rapidly spreads throughout west Anatolia and the Aegean. Western Anatolian Late Chalcolithic pottery had important and unique changes toward the end of the period, resulting in emergence of the pottery groups proper to the Early Bronze Age. So the beak-spouted jug is a unique one among them which eventually would become the characteristic form of the succeeding periods of the Early Bronze Age.
In the framework of the thesis eight basic Beak-Spouted Jug form (A-H) and various subtypes have been identified that are obtained from the excavation dated to the Early Bronze Age in inland Northwest Anatolia. Then, these types not only have been campared with each other according to the pottery zones but also with those of the neighbouring regions; thus, well-known in the region in question, but not without a thorough study on the form about the features and chronology, form’s emergence and development according to form and ware features throughout the Early Bronze Age are put forth
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The early Bronze Age pottery of Keçiçayırı
The thesis entitled “The Early Bronze Age Pottery of Keçiçayırı” covers the potteries of the EB II and EB III that were recovered during the salvage excavations at Keçiçayırı between 2006 and 2009. There is a relatively small amount of pottery from the EB III period, so the study mainly focuses on the EB II pottery. Wares, vessel forms and decorations from EB II are first introduced and statistically evaluated; therafter, the place of this pottery in the west Anatolian EBA Chronology and its relationship with the pottery zones in the region are discussed by way of comparison with the Demircihüyük, Küllüoba, Karaoğlan Mevkii and Kaklık Mevkii sites in the immediate vicinity. The single- phased Keçiçayırı EB II settlement is synchronized with Küllüoba IVC-IVB and Demircihüyük N-P levels and thus dated to the late EB II period. The EB III pottery is, on the other hand, synchronized with the Küllüoba II E-D levels defined as “Proto- Transitional Period.
