Comparative evaluation of various serological tests in the laboratory diagnosis of Brucellosis

    No full text
Introduction: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of public health importance having an impact on animal husbandry and dairy industry. Isolation of bacteria from blood cultures is very low, and diagnosis mainly depends on serology and molecular methods. The aim of this study is to know the impact of various serological tests on the diagnosis of brucellosis. Materials and Methods: In a prospective study, a total of 180 samples, 90 from pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) and 90 from high-risk group comprising veterinarians and animal handlers were serologically tested by Rose Bengal plate test, standard tube agglutination (STA) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and results were analyzed. Results: Out of 90 PUO cases, 28 were positive for brucellosis and in high-risk group, out of 30 veterinarians three were positive and out of 60 animal handlers 14 were positive. Male preponderance was seen. Rose Bengal and STA tests were still efficient methods for brucellosis serodiagnosis. The ELISA was observed to be more efficient in both acute and chronic brucellosis. Conclusion: All the three methods used are efficient methods for detecting Brucella antibody. Rose Bengal card test is the best suited for rapid diagnosis in rural endemic area as STA test is laborious and time-consuming. ELISA is the most sensitive test

Efficacy of a map on search, orientation and access behaviour in a hypermedia system

Many researchers have proposed hypertext and hypermedia as superior learning environments over traditional linear-based approaches. At the same time, reports of disorientation amongst students working in these environments has become a topic of major concern. The study reported in this paper sets out to investigate the efficacy of the provision of maps on students' ability to search, orientation and access information in a hypertext-based learning task. The domain used required students to learn about the theory of tectonic plates. The results indicate that the greater use of maps led to less relevant searching behaviour and less effective search effort. In conclusion, it is argued that the concept of the spatial metaphor has not served the designers and students of hypertext and hypermedia environments well. Further, it is proposed that designers of non-linear learning environments would be better served by concentrating on the fundamental usability of their systems rather than attempting to introduce navigational aids, which themselves are a symptom of poor design

- O Caçador de Esmeraldas de Osvaldo Oliveira de 1979Abstract: This work is meant to show the study about the trajectory of Alfredo Roberto Alves' movie Fernão Dias, wich was produced in Campinas in 1956. The movie represents the beginning and the end of Campinas' second movié period, comprising besides it own development, other movies and their directors that belong to the same period. The adopted approach is divided in two distinct chapters: 1-The movie Fernão Dias and its own relations: The relations established with Campinas's first movie period in the 1920's. Amilar Alves, who directed João da Matta, produced in Campinas in 1923, was also the author of the play Fernão Dias, which was adapted to be a movie, by his son, Alfredo Roberto Alves. Fernão Dias, its period and influences. The outcoming of São Paulo's movie industry brings up the old desire of establishinf Campinas's movie production back. Other productions movie directors like Antoninho Hossri, Henrique de Oliveira Júnior e Femando Gardel. II - Fernão Dias - the movie analyse The comparative analyse between the movie Fernão Dias and: - Bandeirantes, directed by Humberto Mauro, 1940 - O Caçador de Esmeraldas, directed by Osvaldo Oliveira, 1979MestradoMestre em Multimeio

Is the Salam phase transition relevant to the causal origin of homochirality?

    No full text
From the point of view of (a) chemical evolution and (b) exobiology (the origin of life in the universe), we discuss the possibility that phase transitions of the type postulated by Salam in 1991 to occur in a racemic mixture of amino acids, may play instead the role of an amplification mechanism in the novel context of chirally-pure samples of amino acids. Salam's seminal contribution referred to the role of phase transitions in the induction of the observed homochirality of protein amino acids. This was assumed to occur in a racemic mixture that, as a consequence of the conjectured phase transition, turned homochiral beneath a certain critical temperature, T_c. In the present review we discuss selected theoretical aspects of the question of homochirality. The relevance of starting a new generation of experiments is pointed out, as suggested by the present author in 1991. These experiments should test a form of condensed matter that has so far not been at the forefront of research from the point of view of the phase transitions. We discuss those aspects of the origin of homochirality which are still valid and require verification

Optimal Lojasiewicz-Simon Inequalities and Morse-Bott Yang-Mills Energy Functions

    No full text
For any compact Lie group G, we prove that the Yang–Mills energy function obeys an optimal gradient inequality of Łojasiewicz–Simon type (exponent 1/2) near the critical set of flat connections on a principal G-bundle over a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension d ≥ 2 and so its gradient flow converges at an exponential rate to that critical set. We establish this optimal Łojasiewicz–Simon gradient inequality by three different methods. Our first proof gives the most general result by direct analysis and relies on our extension of a theorem due to Uhlenbeck [86] that gives existence of a flat connection on a principal G-bundle supporting a connection with L^d/2 -small curvature, existence of a Coulomb gauge transformation, and W^1,p Sobolev distance estimates for p > 1. Our second proof proceeds by first establishing an optimal Łojasiewicz–Simon gradient inequality for abstract Morse–Bott functions on Banach manifolds, generalizing an earlier result due to the author and Maridakis [31, Theorem 4]. Our third proof establishes the optimal Łojasiewicz–Simon gradient inequality by direct analysis near a given flat connection that is a regular point of the curvature map. We prove similar results for the self-dual Yang–Mills energy function near regular anti-self-dual connections over closed Riemannian four-manifolds and for the full Yang–Mills energy function over closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension d ≥ 2, when known to be Morse–Bott at a given Yang–Mills connection
